The 911 call and body-worn camera video from Aug. 24, 2019, show the contact between Aurora Police and Elijah McClain in Aurora, Colorado.
Full video from Aurora Police Department: • Body Worn Camera Regar...
It was Aug. 24, 2019, when a teenage boy called 911 and relayed that he saw Elijah McClain wearing a coat and mask and acting "suspicious." Less than a minute after police arrived, McClain was taken to the ground and engaged in a struggle with three Aurora officers.
Officers used a now-banned carotid hold to keep McClain restrained. Paramedics administered 500 mg of ketamine to sedate him, and officers were later told he had no pulse in the back of an ambulance and needed CPR. McClain was taken off life support three days later.

What really pisses me off about this is that I've watched SO MANY "911" videos where people have called in about someone that IS acting threatening or could actually be dangerous, and the dispatchers say, "well, sorry, but if he's not actually DOING anything, there's nothing that we can really do". I've heard that so many times - before someone actually gets killed. But here, this guy (Elijah) isn't doing a DAMN thing except walking down the road to a convience store. So what if he waved his hands? Maybe he was listening to music through earbuds and was air-drumming or something. Then the cops don't even give him a chance, even though they didn't SEE him doing anything more than just walking down the road. This is just so infuriating!

Why do they have excessive force on such a skinny little kid. I never saw anything that remotely suggests the kid has crazy strength. The police say this for the benefit of the cameras catching them make those statements. It was a bad investigation and an even worse apprehension. This is sickening to hear and watch. It’s amazing how none of the body cameras show him reaching for a gun. Watch we do hear from the body cams is the young man sounding like someone who has disabilities and possibly on the spectrum. They treated him like an animal. So sad.

@dankfinch Elijah's reaction wasn't about putting his ego first. He was in shock for being suddenly attacked and detained by police for no reason, because he knew he had done nothing wrong. Any normal human being would respond defensively and in shock as Elijah did, in such a situation. The amygdala (part of the brain) kicks in, which controls the fight or flight response and that means that one reacts with emotions -- particularly fear -- rather than calm and logic. Elijah didn't have much conscience control over his reaction, just like none of us would in the same situation. He was in shock. I really wish police were made to understand that these reactions are normal and that it is irrational to expect someone in a situation like that to not become defensive or emotional. He was trying to explain to the cops that he had to turn his music off to hear what they were saying, etc., but none of that mattered to the cops. In their minds, he was "guilty" of something without even simply just first asking him why he was wearing a ski mask while walking down the street. The cops are responsible for Elijah's response. NOT Elijah's mother.

No statement of "hey we got a call and wanted to check on you". Nothing. Just pull up on him and hands on. Add to that from what i understand he is on the spectrum. Since when has that been a crime? Good for you, though, for thinking he deserved to be brutally assaulted and killed for not complying with an unlawful arrest when he had the right to resist and walk away. He wasn't armed, and he had no weapons. There are plenty of videos of actual criminals who get treated better after waving guns around.

I was a cop for 34 years in El Paso, TX and had my fair share of encounters with street people. Absent any overt action by McClain, I see no reason for law enforcement contact, much less investigative detention. Elijah was stopped because the cop was investigating 911 call about him. Doesnt meant that Elijah did anything wrong or that he "deserved it". He didnt. @@Crispy1961I've seen plenty of body cams of people complying and dying. Putting their hands up, getting on the ground, laying on the floor, cuffed and still getting a bullet to the body or beaten. Just like here, many of those people were on the spectrum, deaf, or experienced symptoms that made their form of complying "not good enough" for the officers that attacked them. What you're asking for is for the public to develop a triggered bodily response to red and blue lights and a uniform. To immediately go limp and pliable when approached by officers. Which is unreasonable and ridiculous. Most people don't expect their day to involve being tackled by police and when you are approached aggressively by multiple officers and tackled to the ground, your body's going to respond with fight, flight or freeze. And those three can happen without you intending on fleeing or trying to escape a hold. Twitching your legs and trying to get the pressure off your airway is always going to feel like resistance to the person restraining you. His body was in danger, being contorted and pinned by a force and surrounded by others threatening to have him bitten by dogs, he was panicking, vomited, and started saying anything he could to show that he was no threat. Surprise, shock and confusion fueled restistance are things that will always happen, no matter what so why aren't they ever prepared for it?

@@roflrex It is true. Read up on Investigatory stops. Its purpose is for the police to stop suspicious people to confirm or dispel their suspicious. A 911 cal on them gives them that reasonable suspicion. You can later argue in court whether that particular 911 call was enough for reasonable suspicion (in this case, it would most likely not be enough). But thats what you do in court. On the street, you comply. So you are alive to dispute it later in court. Be smart, teach your children.
@roflrex

@@Crispy1961 You're also just surrendering your rights because a high school drop out was given a badge and a gun and tells you to "comply". A 911 call does not give them the authority to stop any citizen. They can investigate. But no citizen is obligated to help with that investigation. To comply is giving into an unlawful order. Also, in this case, he did dispel their alarm by saying I'm walking home. He has a grocery bag in his hand.

The caller thoroughly demonstrated he was an unreliable idiot. "What's the opposite of North?" and can't even tell her what street he's on. So the guy was wearing a mask, perfectly legal, so you called the police on him??? The caller and dispatch are just as culpable as the officer. Also, listen to how effortlessly and automatically the police are TRAINED to lie. They're recounting what happened to responding backup and the story doesn't match reality at all. "We confronted him and he started acting crazy and he reached for my gun". That's not what happened at all. But those are the words that absolve them from their violent crimes, so they automatically say them no matter what. It's just like the famous "STOP RESISTING!" when they're not resisting but they want to be legally allowed to take their anger out on their victim. This means police can never ever ever be trusted in a court of law. Also, we have to get rid of this tired myth that drugs can somehow instantly make someone much stronger. You're as strong as you are, no more, no less. Drugs don't change the mechanical leverage you have.

Bleeding hearts keep telling police how to do a job they aren't capable of doing themselves. You know nothing about the realities on the ground. Whether you believe he went for the gun is irrelevant. What do you know about it? If you decided police policy, society would disintegrate to a kind of violence you cannot imagine, and people like you would be the first victims. Keep pushing. See what happens if something breaks. Peace is fragile as you wouldn't know. History is a horror show. Do you want to return to it?

The young-man said he couldn’t sense himself… they were totally not attentive to what he was saying. Everything was just an act of force with the police officers… every movement the young-man made to get comfortable they threatened him … there was no way anyone would not be in pain how they had him … totally unrealistic to not want anyone to move when they are in a painful situation… as a professional seeing all these mistakes was painful… they drugged him when he totally wasn’t moving… unnecessary… the professional mis-opportunities was hard to watch.

Why was the drug administered in the first place. I was given ketamine at the hospital because of an injury. After receiving another drug, I never understood the reason for the ketamine. It's a terrible experience for anyone. Praise God I didn't have the same result. As I awakened, I could see the nurses observing my reaction and making fun of my experience. For this drug to be available to paramedics for administering for any reason is beyond their ability to make that determination. This is so sad and demonstrates the system being able to, for any reason, take us down and out. He was fine until the show up of the others. He hadn't done a thing. Just walking home.

Without knowing a person's allergies or recent drug use why would EMS be administering sedatives like this? Try strapping him to the gurney first, he was not even moving during the time of the injection. I dont think the cops meant to hurt this guy, but I do think going to the chokehold when the suspect is out-numbered 2 to 1 and not showing weapons or a real threat is too aggressive. Halting oxygen to the brain is very dangerous, cardiac arrest can happen then. The choke hold is a LAST resort, but maybe the training was different then in Colorado.

The issue here is Ketamine and why/how it was administered. I have watched this case with a broken heart from the first evening it was reported on the local Denver news, until Friday when the 2 paramedics were found guilty (one of them felony arrested and detained for incarceration immediately after the verdict) and I will continue to follow this story. It is so obvious and clear that Elijah was a sensitive, loving and beautiful soul. The hobbies he pursued, his occupation as a massage therapist with an interest in healing, his love of animals (and playing violin for them when he could) and his deep love for his family. His introvert identity, which could be autism or simple sensitivity, also tells me he was an empath who felt things deeply. Something that not one of the 5 who did this to him could/can understand, nor apparently trained to try. I, too, was injected with Ketamine by the Denver PD in 2016 after falling asleep while driving home late one night. I hit a tree, and when the Denver PD arrived, they approached and tackled me and immediately injected me in the shoulder, even though I was already calm and in no way needed to be chemically restrained. They did not tell me they were injecting me and when I asked what they were doing they ignored me. I was then taken to the ER (w/o need) where even the medical staff wasn’t open about the use of Ketamine, which w/ the recent news of Matthew Perry’s death being attributed to an excess of ketamine makes me wonder wtf is going on w/ clumsy law enforcers overdosing citizens. Much love to Elijah’s family. ❤

He kept saying I want to go home or I’m going home. Why aren’t the cops being charged.. especially the initial ones? From what I recall initially, , owner or staff knew who he was. You've never seen a suspicious white guy?? I see them everyday. And I guarantee you that if a white guy didn't comply with the officers, they'd put him on the ground also. The fire department was there because the officers called them at the beginning of the altercation because the kid behaved like he was chemically impaired. The reason they didn't ask him where he lived was because, as one officer said, "we didn't get that far." Meaning that he would not stop walking, comply with their instructions, and talk to them. How effective is your police force if they just let suspects walk away because they "want to go home"? I truly wish you were one of those cops so you could show us how it was supposed to go.
