Full news conference: About a dozen ballots intercepted, cast without voters’ knowledge in Mesa Coun

A criminal investigation is underway after the ballots of about a dozen voters in Mesa County were intercepted and cast without the voters’ knowledge, Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold said.
The secretary of state revealed the issue at a news conference on Wednesday afternoon.

In this set of circumstances there will probably be additional federal charges as it seems that the ballots were received via mail, and tampering with the mail can be prosecuted with various federal statues. Those would be in addition to whatever state statues are implicated. But otherwise, it's usually coverd under state laws. (Though there are a few federal statues that might also apply.)

My ballot was challenged for signature once. I had to send a copy of my driver's license to verify the signature. I guess my signature must have changed a little bit over time, otherwise don't know why it was challenged.

Sooo not sure how you send in a ballot in USA, but I am a Dutch citizen living abroad. Mail vote is what I do. I MUST include my voting invitation AND a copy of my passport/ID. The ballot itself is in a separate closed envelope together with the ID and Voting invitation. No ID included no vote. Voter ID is so important.

I live in Colorado and generally like the system. Still signature verification seems less than secure. Many students today are not even learning cursive, so a distinctive signature is less common than in the past. I would like to see a more definitive method.

My daughter had this same thing happen in AZ in 2020. Someone used her identity to cast a vote. It was her first time voting. We complained to theAZ Secretary of State office. They called a few hours later and said “they’ve fixed the problem, and that her actual vote was accepted, but we got zero feedback from AZ Sec of State about what the problem was or if it was even looked into. I commend CO for their transparency with the public. Unfortunately, we came away from the AZ voting experience feeling disenfranchised by two facts: 1. The sitting Sec of State was running for AZ gov at the time, so that seemed like a conflict of interest to preside over you own election and 2: We reported voter fraud and were basically given lip service, being told that everything is fixed and fine, but given no explanation as to what/how/who happened and was it happening frequently or even being investigated. Very disappointed by lack of action/transparency with AZ election processes. We’ve since moved out of AZ

It's a pretty mixed bag. Some. Neighborhoods have locking community mailboxes, lots of areas are more like a modern version of a town you'd see in an old western. Lots of Ranches not too far outside of the city, beautiful, quaint downtown area. Lots of normal mailboxes, lots of unique custom mailboxes, lots of locked mailboxes. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Wherever it's happening I'm sure they're investigating in every possible way they can.

No, she said at least 3 of the 12 made it through signature verification and WERE COUNTED and cannot be removed from the count. So at this point 25% of the suspected ballots have become fraudulent votes that are a permanent part of the result. Even if the valid voter in allowed to vote now, it will either be a SECOND vote for a candidate or their vote cancels out the fraudulent one. I dod not see this as “success.” Ballots should not be separated from their envelopes and counted prior to Election Day, thus leaving maximum time for potentially discovering this kind of fraud and curing those ballots BEFORE it’s too late. This is why I ABHOR the mail-in voting process. Even when signature verification is done, there is a high failure rate and illegal votes get into the count.

That’s laughable. This does the opposite and shows the security risks with universal mail in. There is no chain of custody. We have a huge problem in the states with guidelines to assume the signature is correct. The GOP recently sued the State of Michigan over this.

So Western Colorado and Mesa County says all you need to know. Colorado is a BLUE STATE but the eastern and western area of the state are SOLIDLY RED. In past election there were several cases of people voting twice on ballots intended for their dead wives or parents. Every one of them by a Republican so it makes it easy to conclude that the person involved in incorrectly signing multiple ballots was a Republican. Also Mesa County was where the County Clerk was just sent to JAIL for her role in a FRAUDULANT TRUMP VOTER MACHINE EXAMINATION SCHEME.

To all in Colorado! You can have your ballot tracked. It tells you when it has been shipped when they have received and if your signature has been accepted. I did it because I was worried that someone would intercept my ballot. Please do what needs to be done to protect your vote. It counts.

Yes, if anyone is concerned about fraud, YOU need to be vigilant and check on the status of your ballot. I live in CO and am signed up on ballot tracker. You can't just print a fraudulent ballot here as all ballots are coded. If you are doing your due diligence your ballot can not be stolen. You have a right to vote, and a responsibility to ensure that the voting process is secure. Hopefully the person, or people who did this are prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

Actually, Florida has the same system. I checked almost daily and knew when the ballot was mailed, when it was received back, and when it was counted. Only then did I stop the daily checking.

It does not mater who the vote was cast for. Any illegal vote casted is a vote stolen and one reason why I think in person voting is the most secure. I am thankful that Mesa County mentioned it in real time instead of after the election.

Agree, everyone needs to look to see if they have an issue with rejected ballot - or someone voting in lieu of them (while they wait for their absentee ballot). In cases of verified fraud the ballots should be fingerprinted, which with that many ballots would occur unless they used gloves. Multiple sets of prints on the ballot could indicate conspiracy. Take DNA from the adhesive folds. Even if not good DNA it could indicate if multiple people involved. The way the ballot was voted might give a pretty good indication of motive. Was the ballot voted all the way down or just President, Senate, House, and maybe a selection of initiatives. There was a case in Georgia where a candidates wife acted as a friendly helper and submitted ballots for seniors and friends. She reopened the ballot envelopes and changed opposing vote (or incomplete ones) to her husband. She had apparently done this over four different elections but finally got caught.

This is the system in California as well. Very secure. I follow it closely. I am elderly and can only vote by mail so appreciate the efficiency of this system. Good job Colorado. Apparently they are. Good question if the folks have locking personal mailboxes vs. roadside old style boxes. Are these operable? Look like they've been jimmied? Many envelopes will have a tracking code applied that may indicate when the ballots were returned. Are these all on the same date? Or was this a multi-date theft or ballot return effort. If only a few Federal or Local races were voted then the person could have done that in their vehicle. But if they voted the complete ballot, that could take awhile. Wonder if this idiot(s) was stupid enough to drive to the closest Starbucks, sat down with a latte, and started filling in multiple ballots there. Maybe someone saw this. Thought it was weird. Remembers the date. That would allow a review of security video.

All postal employees have their prints in the system so that would be pretty foolish. The Inspectors are already all over that office and being very serious about it. When my boyfriend rural mail carrier was accused of tampering with mail a few years ago, it turned out to be some kids pulling mail out of a community box by daily running their fingers right inside the mail slot...then when they could reach some, pulled it out and ransacked it.
