We used to pay to train up each time we gained a level ( and EXP stopped if we didn't train) I saw this as a partial explanation of the GP acquired = EXP It used to be a goal to build strongholds, churches or other expensive construction projects. We used to have hirelings to pay and followers to feed. Mages used to have to pay for material spell components and for research to gain new spells. Characters used to be broke all the time from trying to pay for all of this stuff

Part of what I like about 5E is that a DM can still layer that onto their own games, but the fact that it's not a required part of the core rules can definitely cause issues. I've never used the training feature myself, even though I like the idea, because most players I've played with have different expectations on how the game should go!

Play a Wizard. Adding spells to your spellbook and making a copy are going to leave you tapped for quite a while. I'm consistently near broke.

As a new (returning) player who is recently starting in the Adventures League, I really was a bit concerned with what my money driven rogue Claritin might pursue after my initial steps of spending all my early time carousing and establishing connections. This video was really helpful with ideas on how I may advance things. Since Adventures League is a bit more strict about sticking to the main quest though, I’m sort of hopeful I can manage to make the investments in business and carousing nobles for high up connections and favors to further expand my influence really pay off.

Glad I could help! Best of luck with the adventure's league and pursuing your greed ;)

Buy wyverns and/or griffrens and plate armour for them, that's gonna cost some cash
@ImaginaryJeremy5 жыл бұрын
Fun idea! And definitely expensive!

I'd spend 200,000 GP on 2 wyverns, their platemail, hiring soldiers, handlers, farmers, etc as well as the land ownership, the land itself, and tenders to the land and a homestead to ensure that in the end they'd be as self sufficient as possible. And you can make that money back in less than 3 months by getting their venom and selling it. 20 vials of venom is worth 28,000 GP. Based on research on snakes irl and other venom producing mythical creatures in dnd guides, you can take 4 vials a day from each Wyvern and make 11200 a day. in 20 days you've paid your expenses and then some. Had a DM who shot up prices for everything by over 8 times the standard amount simply because he felt I had 'too much gold'. I called him a Neutral Idiot and he's not been my DM since.

So I had a DM that after a fight with a noblemen I remembered he said his horse had armor on I asked the DM what kind of armor the horse had on to which he responded with plate I said I take the armor off the dead horse he says okay I proceed to lug this thing back to town to sell it which is when he realizes that he just gave me an item worth 6000 gold I proceeded to get the party decked out in some new duds and we went on are merry way

Haha, epic!

It’s easy enough for them to just give you a terrible price for the armor, damage the armor (just say it’s rusted) or somehow keep you from taking it.... if they’re creative.

my 2 favorite things to do in regards to money as a player: 1] break the economy 2] spend that cash on shit that opens up options like airships, property, and businesses i care little for magic items most of the time because i usually plan what items what character would want or think to have some have small aspirations like a portable apartment others huge ones like a staff of power and a portal to the city of brass

Any ideas on how to "play" downtime so that it "means" something other than just a few die rolls and a narrative montage/monologue? I've tried homebrewing domain systems (like 2E Birthright domain system among others) and am really hoping Matt Coleville's upcoming KS book fills the void.
@ImaginaryJeremy6 жыл бұрын
Yes! I actually love Downtime & I'm currently using a pretty elaborate system from Blades in the Dark, which I enjoy. You're mainly talking about big periods of downtime, right? I think Colville's books will definitely help.
@dreadmorg6 жыл бұрын
Yes, a few weeks or even longer. I would *LOVE* to see a vid on your thoughts, ideas and system for how you run downtime. *HINT* :)

Fill out the NPCs of the city... and make the characters interact with them to buy supplies, spell components, equipment maintenance and repairs... Drop plot hook hints as they do their shopping.

That feeling when you’re over a year into your first campaign, and you have literally never bought anything even though you had so many chances to and you’re getting close to the campaign’s final arc... I don’t know how my character is still alive

One of the main reason I stopped playing D&D was because I wasn't allowed to buy anything that was worth buying, even though the rules said I could.

I recently acquired over 20k gold in our game. I’m terrified that my DM is gonna steal it and I have no idea what to use it on.

Send them this video! Haha. Hopefully the DM gives you some cool opportunities instead of just stealing it
