Oh no, this one ends on a cliffhanger! Head gasket? (I wonder how much they let it overheat?)😟 Still, I love how solid it is, and how nicely it ran after swapping the fuel pressure regulator. Things like the windshield seal and shift bushing are pretty minor, fortunately! The dash lights are baffling unless the circuits are getting wet. Wishing you the best as you dig into it! 🙂

Silver is such a great color for a 945. Just do the head, its worth it and not a big hustle if you find a decent machine shop for the resurfacing. I drove a '96 that just passed 750.000 kilometers this weekend. Original B230FK, original M90, head done twice. Ran like most of the 150-200k. 940's i've driven and owned. Gotta love it!

Good to see and hear her running well. About the dash lights, I have had these kind of things with all old cars I have ever bought. Most of them were stationary for some time. Slop in shifter, need the plastic rubberized bushing which requires dropping it into hot water to soften up before clearful insertion. Fuel pressure regulators are cheap and easy to replace. Soldered those flexable circuit boards before to correct charging and bulb light problems, easy to remove cluster. Would recommend replacing coolant temperature sensor which controls fuel mixture and check turbine on turbo for front to back play, common after 140K miles, will freeze up with engine no power. Use full synthetic oil 10w-30 to prevent turbine freeze up. Cheers!

The funny goings-on with the dash lights could have been down to the ignition barrel/switch being slightly sticky. Quite a common problem on 700s and 900s which haven't been driven for a while. My 740 is currently idling really badly, rather like the 940 was. I last replaced its fuel pressure regulator 13 years ago, so it might be worth replacing it again.

Good catch on the FPR! I would think though that the turbo might have a different spec from the NA cars? Big improvement though. The shifter bushing is a buck and an easy fix. My 88 760 turbo was plagued with bad solder connection all over the place. One in the fuel pump relay left me on the roadside once. Sad about the fuel in the coolant. Still a good purchase and I am happy to watch you sort her out!

You had that custom bluetooth exhaust. 😆 As for your cluster, my 745t had issues as well. If your solder joints look good tighten up all the screws on the back since they do carry a circuit through the board as well. The only issue my cluster has left is that my temp gauge sticks and just needs a smack on the dash to get it moving. Does it once a day at most. Head gasket is in your future I see. You'll get it sorted 😎👍

I briefly had a 940 estate when my normal car was off the road for a few weeks. If I recall correctly that was supposed to be running OK but turned out to have a blown head gasket. Respray looks good unless you really look close so it's fine, at least someone cared enough to spend a few ££ for a budget respray? Hopefully it's not head allowing fuel into water - but you don't have much pressure so doubt it's coming from petrol in cylinders, maybe inlet manifold gasket? This is familiar in retrospect …I got into a rock tumbling down a hill on my 940 Turbo. Running perfect, but took it in for an oil leak. Turned out to be the dreaded leaky head gasket. But wait! Turned out the head gasket was leaking due to 3 cracks in the head…..and there was carbon buildup on the valves…finally my brain just said @##& it, let’s go all out while it’s apart. Nice and healthy now after a mere: head, head gasket, top end rebuild, timing belt, water pump, and tensioner. You never know what has been done to any used car…but I’m convinced it is worse in cars like Volvo bricks because they can hide past trauma so much better than most.
