A 1931 Hobo Christmas! | Silent Night in the Hobo Jungle!

Former 50 of 74 years a hobo. What can I possibly say ? I almost started crying, remembering some of my Christmases in a jungle or under a bridge. Everything was so true to life. Still had jungles and decent hobos when I started out. You hailed before you came into a camp. You put into the pot before you took out. You shared information on possible work. I often made coffee cup/soup bowls out of time cans for the newbies. Had a fairly good jungle near the old Milwaukee Road yard in Portland OR with about 20 other hobos ( 1970s ). Some new faces, some I'd known for years, some local folks down on their luck. Kept the place spotless. Was summer tho, and about the only work was picking fruit. Maybe you could make $10 a day if the crew picked you for the day. Christmas time was always way down south. Hobos and home guards would usually go to a Christmas dinner with all the fixing and you brought a container to hold your " seconds " for the next day. Shortly after the holidays it was back to thin bean soup and stale bread. Unless you hustled a job or dumpster dived enough for supper and maybe a little more. Of course the fast food joints way back wouldn't throw bleach in the garbage bags either. Number of Christmases all by myself as drifters were replaced by despair, drunks, and druggies.

I grew up with both parents who lived through the depression. They had many stories of hobos visiting their homes. And foremost, how those men were truly appreciative of every small kindness they received in exchange for doing some chores or work that was needed. I pray we never fall upon those hard times again. My you all have a blessed Christmas.

The problem is that with inflation being 40 to 60 present there are a lot of people already finding out what homeless really is. Only problem is there now being homeless in most states is illegal and a felony in more than a few.

@@MrAvidOutdoorsman i can write you a story too. As he was waiting for night fall a lady showed up. She was a hooker. She had an infection in one of her eyes. If you can pass that she was attractive. She said her son had hit her and she pretended she was knocked out and her son then proceeded rape her. She told the the story with funness. she had a bad night . Here eye was keeping her from making money and she felt like a monster. The eye looked really bad and scary. She said she money for a motel room and invited the homeless young man . Age range she was 60 plus the homeless man was in his early 30s. He took her on her offer. Minutes after a car pulled up. It was a color guy she handed him some money and he gave her and I a ride to the nearest motel. As the young men went straight to the bed. He was tired and he being sleeping on the bushes aside of the road for some time . The lady had bought drugs and had invited someone else to came in and smoke with her or something. When she paid for the room she needed a room with a kitchen and had to pay extra for it but is what she wanted. Ad the young man slept she and the person she invited did something in the kitchen. After the other person left she came to bed and started robbing the young mens back and passing some sort of hot candle on his back she said it was for healing and the back would feel better. Thank you for this beautiful reminder of simpler, but hard times. Sharing is the best way to live. When my great grandparents came to Canada from Ukraine, they came in late fall and had nothing. They were given cheap land, but if needed to be cleared and a dugout was the first priority. So they didn’t have a garden, or any crops yet. They had no money or any animals yet. They would not have survived their first winter here if it wasn’t for a neighbour. They were poor too, but they gave them a dairy cow. Having milk, cream, cheese, and butter saved them. Hard times bring people back together in beautiful ways. Maybe not so much these days, but some of us still have old souls and see each other. May god bless you this holiday season. I had a uncle that was a hobo, and I was totally fascinated with him when I was a kid he would come around that once a year and visit family. He cared a little wooden box with files in it. He was set up in places and sharpen saws for people said he could really do a good job, I hate the sewer rock was dead accuracy was that a can in the field and he would hit it every time he said he would kill rabbits on his around the railroad tracks and it was good to eat. Thank you for sharing your wonderful story. I have gained both appreciation and knowledge from your presentation. After retirement, I built a small house in the countryside and spent some of my time training scout leaders. The rest of my time is spent on my hobbies, playing with my dogs, cats, and chasing away the annoying chickens. This past holiday season, my wife and I had a small Christmas party with our siblings.
