Great find! I can’t believe the size of the air filter! I learned how to drive in my mothers 1959 Oldsmobile 88. She was magnificent! Like a starship. Sky blue and chrome exterior with a light cream colored top. All chrome and glass on the inside. It was so beautiful. So easy to handle. I miss that car. Lynn St. James the NASCAR driver grew up in my neighborhood and we attended the same school but she was ahead of me.

The J-2 Rocket was legendary in performance circles. Please note, it is a four door hard-top, not sedan Should'nt take a lot to make it a show stopper.

My '57 Olds 98 Starfire (4 bbl. carb. engine) would put the speedometer needle way past 120 and halfway across that fuel gauge between 120 and 0... a previous owner may have replaced a bad camshaft with a performance cam... if the Hydramatic tranny was manually held in gears, it would beat the smaller J2 88's! Valve covers of video car don't say "J2"... all the engines were "Rocket"... Anyone who has heard the howl from a tripower GTO knows why the freer breathing unsilenced air cleaners were added to this car...

@@BuzzLOLOL Oh yes my 57 Olds 88 J2 has the stock Batwing oil bath air cleaner that came with it but all through high school and for years after I ran it with little chrome 2 inch air cleaners like those. The Woooph you would hear when you pushed the gas pedal past two thirds and the secondary's opened up it sounded like the Rocket engine was going to suck the hood down through the intake!

HEY, MY DAD HAD THE SAME CAR WHEN I WAS A KID. HIS WAS RED ON THE FRONT HALF AND WHITE ON THE BACK HALF. RED INTERIOR. GORGEOUS CAR. I REMEMBER AS A KID, WHEN WE WOULD GO TO THE DRIVE INN MOVIES, I WOULD LAY UP ON THE REAR WINDOW SHELF TO WATCH THE SHOWS. THE CHROME PIECE UNDER THE TAIL LIGHT IS WHERE YOU ADDED GAS BY RAISING IT UP. HE USED TO DRAG RACE IT LOCALLY IN HARLAN KY. ACROSS THE BRIDGE IN COLDIRON KY. USUALLY WON, UNTIL MOPAR CAME OUT WITH THE 1964 HEMI'S. BACK THEN THERE WAS NO WORK IN EASTERN KENTUCKY EXCEPT UNDERGROUND COAL MINES. SO ALL THE LOCAL BOYS HEADED NORTH TO CHICAGO " THAT'S WHERE WE MIGRATED TO " OR DETROIT, CINCINNATI, COLUMBUS, AND SUCH. THEY WOULD DRIVE BACK HOME ON HOLDAYS AND SUCH. THEY REFERRED TO THIS TREK AS THE BRIARHOPPER 500. LOVE THE CAR. WISH I HAD IT. MY DAD'S WAS A J2 ALSO.

My dad bought a 1957 super 88 black with a red strip in the aft chrome piece. In 1960 when i turned 16 i learned to drive the Olds…i remember that my father had to replace the tires for the tyme he got a set General dual 90s. When the family decided to move from Lafayette, Indiana to California we settled in Milpitas/San Jose California. I remember that in 1960 my father bought ba set of seat belts for the Olds, it did not come with seat belts from the factory. I was tasked to install the seat belts….oh my God i was so proud to be trusted to do this..I was 16 at the tyme…Saturday night i was allowed to cruise first street in San Jose oh what a thrill, Solent Friday evening washing and waxing the Olds. I remember the hub caps had clips that held them on they were spring clips the hub caps were what we called “flippers” they were stick..If i ever have to chance to get a 57 super 88 four door had top I’ll jump on like box turtle on a chunk of lettuce… by the way how could i buy this Super 88? Thanx for the video, brought back wonderful fond memories of my growing years…..Regards, George E. Cole….gcole55@bellsouth.net
