can someone explain why you hold the zero cost ice block in hand for a few turns? why not just play it asap and free the hand slot/ensure no counter?

When the three cost ice block gets popped it's convenient to have a zero mana one to play afterwards. If hand space isn't an issue it's generally a good idea to save zero mana plays until you need them, although there are exceptions.
