1:34 Steamdeck does not have the fastest UHS-1 SD card reader. UHS-1 "unofficially" supports two transmission specifications, SDR104 and DDR200. Any UHS-1 SD card advertising speeds above 100MB/s is relying on DDR200 protocol to achieve that, which is a very obscure bit of information you'll virtually never see on any product packaging, but that's how it goes in the SD card world.

I've had SD cards die on me many times over the years, losing a $200 SD card would make me cry. I'll stick with my $27 512gb one.

mine just recently died on my steam deck, and i have a 64 ssd so now can only play a few games, but is better to change the ssd to a bigger one.

Another fear is forgetting to remove the card while opening the shell, at least on the first deck, snapping it Hope they fixed that 😢

@LeftyPencil that's not something that you can really "fix" per se.

fwiw the speed improvements on newer cards on steam deck have nothing to do with A2 and just with the fact that newer cards that happen to be branded A2 feature newer faster NAND chips. the A2 spec's random write improvements over A1 require the host kernel and driver to support "command queuing," which to date I have not seen anybody explicitly test for on deck after its linux kernel was finally updated. plus random writes are largely irrelevant to gaming, which as a task is much more reliant on sequential read and write speeds, which are denoted by the U and V specs on a microsd card, not A.

Can you make a video about cloning your micro sd card to another one? I tried to do that from a 1TB to a 2TB, but it didn't work on my steamdeck. I formatted it and copied over the files, but emu deck doesn't open and my emulated games don't load or open at all. Do you know why this might be?

Honestly I don't do any cloning if it's just storage and not an OS partition I'm cloning. For copying games and whatnot you're better off manually copying from your micro SD card to the other card.

@HiTechLoLife hello, I think I probably phrased that wrong. I copied all my files from one card to the new one but for whatever reason, emudeck doesn't open and my roms don't load

So I have that card your mentioned never to buy, why do you think it’s bad I have never had issues with it. How would I know if it’s overheating?

So my issues of course are Steam Deck related. It tends to get stuck in the MicroSD Card slot and will NOT come out easily like others. And when the overheating happens, the write speeds get throttled to hell while downloading Steam games. If you're using it for other devices and it works well then that's great, but given I do focus a LOT on the Steam Deck, the Lexar Play isn't it for me.

Spending $75 on a 1.5TB was bad enough, but an extra $125 for only 512GB more would put me over the edge 😂
