Correction I bought numerous items and misquoted the cost of the tank. It was $575. The $400 tank is the 300 gallon size. Sorry I think I need to go back to my thinking chair. A 500 gallon septic can be installed to use as a cache or a shelter. Other sizes 1000 and 1500 gallon could be used also. If you are developing your property but it will be some time before you start building put a septic tank in and store survival supplies in case you have to bug out to the property. Make sure you place heavy items in the tank so it doesnt work its way up to the surface. Yes they can pop up with a heavy rain if they have nothing in them.A 500 gallon septic can be installed to use as a cache or a shelter. Other sizes 1000 and 1500 gallon could be used also. Have been pondering this. If I were to set something like this up on a retreat owners property, I think it would be wise to run a few buried circuits back to the owners residence. One could monitor for moisture, and security of the lid/hatch. Those circuits could later be used for field phones. Simple two zone dialer would allow for remote monitoring so long as the land lines are working. Just a thought...

You might want to be careful with the polly tanks if they are not burred properly they have a tendency to crush under the weight of the soil. I install septic systems for a living and a lot of the polly tanks we dig up have started to buckle or lose their shape. You would be better off with a concrete tank I am not saying that one wont work just keep an eye on it.

Keep in mind that if you bury one of these in the ground, there is a good possibility that, if not enough weight is put inside, they can float up out of the ground during heavy rains and/or in areas subject to wet conditions. This is a particular hazard when they are first buried before the dirt packs back in solidly. Believe it or not, a concrete tank can do the same thing, especially the rectanglular ones. highly advise installing them with some form of containment strapping to anchor them.

After watching your video, I bought a 2500 gallon tank that is 5'1" tall 4 feet wide and 12 feet long. Because I am almost the same height as the tank is tall , it feels like a small underground bugout location on the homestead. It is 100 feet from house in woods. I did burry it 6 inches below ground . It has been 7 months now and it is holding up good . it seems big enough for my wife and myself with one month of supplies if shtf ever came . Or big enough to hold one year supply of food for 4 persons.

I've got a nice bug out location if things go really bad, but this is brilliant. I've not done much caching, but you could literally put a year or two worth of supplies in there. Since my bug out location is over 300 miles from my home/work, it would be very smart to cache 2 or 3 of these in locations along the way. Hard to find good spots you know you can trust though. Get the 2 chamber 1500 gallon tank, run a water tap up just high enough off the bottom to fill a canteen or 2 gallon cooking pot. Then you can store food, weapons, ammo, and make a place to sleep from the other side where you just ran your water tap too. Now you would have 750 gallons of water stored to drink. You will need to put in 13 cups of bleach per 400 gallons of water if you plan to drink it. Every 30.769 gallons is a cup of bleach. I would go 24.5 cups for 750 gallons. Then on the other side you can store ammo, food, weapons and other supplies. Put In a foam mattress and sleeping bags to sleep on. I would wrap it in rebar and concrete it in, and add a steel hatch if it were me. Put in batteries, a fan for air in and out, run batteries to a small solar panel that you just lay outside when you are there. Then after you got solar, you also can have a few lights, run a laptop or ham radio, etc. I would integrate everything I need into it. Make a separate box with it's own top access for the solar power and batteries, that way in your box you have maximum space. You could do a lot with one of those 1500 gallon 2 chamber tanks.

www.plastic-mart.com/product/5760/1500-gallon-septic-tank-1-compartment-41758 Actually, I would get one of those single chamber 1500 gallon tanks if it were me, and add a 500 gallon right nest to it and fill it will water, then plumb it to the 1,500 gallon tank I was living in.
@SpectrumSurvivalist
@SpectrumSurvivalist 8 жыл бұрын
Actually, one of the following tanks along with a 500 gallon for water would be the better way to go. www.plastic-mart.com/product/6796/2600-gallon-underground-water-cistern-storage-tank-43770Tank is only a bit over 4 feet tall, but then you don't need a ladder or anything to get in and out, of course you can't stand up in it, but who cares, you can sit or sleep just fine in it. The good thing is it has about 14 feet in interior length, and it's about 8 feet wide. This could easily be set up for 2 or 3 people with supplies. If for 2 people, I would go with a 2 chamber 1500 gallon water storage tank and not the 500, and run each person their own water tap. You would be good for almost 2 years of water for 2 people. Put water tank higher than living tank, and then put tap about 6 inches to 1 foot high, that way any dirt will be on bottom of tank. Then you got gravity feed water to your sink if you put one in, and I would in this tank.

The instructions for any of these septic tanks say you need to install it with either 1/4 full or fill it at same level as the ground when you back fill it. Have you actually installed these and not have any collapse on you? The idea sounds good and it is low cost... I just wouldn't want to be buried underground if it collapsed.
@SpectrumSurvivalist
@SpectrumSurvivalist 7 жыл бұрын
heisest The tank will not collapse, they tell you to fill it 1/4th full so it won't float to the top if the water table pushes up on it. It's a boat without anything in it.

Good Morning, It was a pleasure meeting you at the Lakeland Expo. I like your Idea for the 1500 gal model for a temporary shelter. Fyi, For a short term emergency temporary HEPA Filter air filter system, you can plumb in a modified el cheapo HEPA Filter equipped vacuum cleaner that is already a battery powered model or mod one for a 12V motor and add a deep cycle AGM battery and some PVC piping to get the intake above ground. I agree, it could be a nice little basic shelter - with some work. Anyone with some basic carpentry skills could construct a raised platform floor from plywood and dimensional lumber pieces to fit through the man way, or fill the bottom with concrete if you are worried about it floating out of the ground when the water table rises. And, as a buried cache, that sort of container would be great.

If folks are concerned by the tank collapsing if not partially filled with water then just don't completely bury the tank. Instead only bury it about a third and build up the dirt around it into a mound. It can easily be disguised by planting vegetation on/around it. They do sell more robust tanks but they are more expensive. I even saw one that could be used for drinking water.
@davidmicheletti6292
@davidmicheletti6292 8 жыл бұрын
When these tanks a placed into the ground you will need to place some sort of weight inside or ground pressure will force the tank to surface. I've seen it happen to these tank right after rain storms or when the ground becomes frozen. These tanks should be filled with water when being used for a septic tank or some other material inside if being used as a shelter. Even if you poor concrete on top to hold it down a high water table will lift that too. Bury below frost in well drained soil plus enough weight inside to prevent hydrological lifting.
@lowtech5530
@lowtech5530 5 жыл бұрын
The same thing will happen to underground pipelines as well. That's the reason river weights are used. People don't realize when you lay a pipeline in an area that is wet even though the pipe is steel it will eventually come to the to the surface unless it's weighted.

As far as sleeping in that thing it would need ventilation. If you were going to store anything in there such as weapons or food then you really need to insulate it from the surrounding subsurface ground temperatures. Once that energy passes through that thin little plastic barrier it will have a tendency to form condensation which will result in pools of water settling in the bottom of the tank. A simple insulative buffer zone of insulation will stop that process- and you'll want it on the outside of the tank. You could even dig out a rectangular area, line it with rigid foam insulation and fill sand in around your tank. The sand will form a thermal mass heat battery that will help to maintain a warm temperature inside the tank. Especially if you heat it by some means (again, be careful because a candle or flame will consume oxygen- ventilation!). If you don't insulate it the surrounding cooler ground temperature will constantly suck the heat away, plus cause the afore mentioned condensation issues. As you might have guessed, I've done this a few times. And yes, plastic tanks can buckle. Steel will also buckle and crush if not properly reinforced.
@trackerbuckmann1627
@trackerbuckmann1627 9 жыл бұрын
Defeats the purpose. The point is not to have moisture dripping past your goods in the first place.
@trackerbuckmann1627
@trackerbuckmann1627 9 жыл бұрын
***** depending on what you get you will probably have to reinforce it. A plain steel tank with no reinforcement will crush. Even in shallow ground soil shift can crush it and break the welds over time. As far as rust and corrosion you can fiberglass it and thermal wrap it with an insulative buffer to avoid those rapid changes in air space and temperature which result in condensation. Drainage is another important aspect. If you are familiar with the concept of a rubble foundation, that will work excellent. It will not only create an air gap between the ground temperatures and your tank, but the gravel and rubble will allow the water to drain away from the insulated box. You could bury several sections of PVC drain pipe to take excessive water down hill positioned in the gravel below your vessel. I've tried lots of methods. This isn't cheap.. but if you are storing food, seeds or anything that will rust (which should be heavily greased and sealed air tight) this is what works based on my experience.
@trackerbuckmann1627
@trackerbuckmann1627 9 жыл бұрын
***** rigid foam insulation will work. Forgot to answer that question. You might have to special order it, but the best thickness to get is about 4". They use this stuff for building the thermal wraps on earthship houses all the time. It doesn't even need to be right against the tank, either. You could fill that area with sand. Then if you heat the bunker the sand will hold the energy for hours and the rigid foam will keep the ground temperatures from leeching it away. look onto earthship housing if you haven't already.
@trackerbuckmann1627
@trackerbuckmann1627 9 жыл бұрын
***** incorrect. For example, If you heat the floor or the walls and do not incorporate an insulative buffer zone then the cooler ground temperatures will continually drain your walls of heat. Thermal mass can work for or against you.
@trackerbuckmann1627
@trackerbuckmann1627 9 жыл бұрын
***** because you are incorrect. Once the temperature transfers into an open environment (like a cave) from the surrounding ground temperature the moisture seperates and condensation forms. The temperature itself doesn't need to change drastically. The example I gave you was to illustrate the power of thermal mass. You sound like someone with no experience doing what you are talking about. If you don't want to argue then fuck off. I'm actually trying to help people here. If you want to vacuum seal an entire bunker and use oxygen and moisture absorbing chemicals you can avoid that. Let me ask you: have you ever used an air compressor?

One thing that people do with these under ground shelters is put in a single vent pipe to the outside. This would eventually suffocate anyone inside. You must have a "Flow through" of air. A certain Cubic Feet Per Minute (C.F.M.) of air needs to be exhausted through one vent to allow the same CFM of fresh air to be drawn in through a second "intake" vent. Without this, the air stagnates and microbes and chemical processes can consume most of the oxygen in your underground shelter. Do a search for "Confined Space Entry" on Google or KZbin. This also applies to above ground sealed spaces.

Absolutely correct. Confined spaces are deadly .... not "can be" ... are. Asphyxiation is a real possibility if oxygen is not pumped into a tank like this. OSHA has specific rules for confined spaces .... well worth reading for the education.

Yes...your 4 inch line from your house goes into the tank then into your septic field.

Probably be cheaper to do something else. A large cleaned out fuel tank makes excellent shelter.

I'm not sure if you are aware of water table but here in mississippi if that tank is not filled with water it will float up out of the ground. I'm sure there may be some sort of anchors that could possibly hold it down too. Just be aware

The tank don't have to be filled with water, if you fill a good part of it with heavy supplies such as ammo, food, and water cans full of water, I'm sure that will do. A gallon of water weighs about 8.3 pounds, so 500 gallons weighs over 2 tons, but I don't think you would have to put that much weight in there to hold it down. You could always concrete it in to with reinforced rebar, for this use it would be the way to go anyway. They make a two compartment 1500 gallon tank too, there is no reason why you can't fill one side with water and run a tap to the other side, then you would have 750 gallons of water stored to drink.

I was thinking go ahead and make the cutouts for the septic lines, but stove pipe them up through the ground for ventilation. Then when the time comes, just reroute them underground into the drain field...

I'm no structural engineer so I wasn't telling you that you were wrong, I was just seeing if you knew whether or not it would still be structurally sound if you remove a large section. But your steel reinforced door frame idea, especially if you used angle iron, would probably easily make it strong enough. Sorry if it came across as shitting on your idea, wasn't meant that way.

One idea would be to install it above ground or partially buried. Stack hay bales around it. The hatch could be on bottom or the side.

I would spray that with non-black Flex Seal and then camo paint it, if I was gonna bury it, I'd make a cage of schedule 40 around the tank and fill it with quick-crete for weight and added support

They say the average young to middle aged adult has enough sugars, fats, and muscle proteins stored in their body to fuel itself for around 80 days with no caloric intake, so long as you have water. Not to say you will be coherent or able to physically do much, but you'll be alive. But if it comes to that, you can always eat inner bark, grasses, and flowers to prolong that. You'll also probably end up insane.

Heh, no way, bro. Thoughts like these are how we come about thinking up solutions. If no one ever said, hey I want to tie a key to a kite and fly it in a storm to see if I can harness the power of electricity, then we probably wouldn't be watching vids like this on this handy electronic device.

Maybe you could put enough desiccant in the tank to bring down the humidity so it won't sweat on the inside. The lid is airtight so no additional humidity will enter the container unless you open it again.

I paid the same price you would pay I got NO NO NO discount at all. Dont call me a liar. Its sad when I can say something in a video and you never meet me and you never looked into my eyes and you can attack my character like that. When I talk about a product I give full disclosure and I tell you if I got the product for free. If I have to show a receipt on a video that would force you to make a video and publicly apologize to me if you had any character at all.
