You'd need more than one video for that! Haha. you'd need to go over the physics of light, positioning flash (angle/distance), diffusers, camera settings, overpowering the sun, using flash with ND filters, HSS, ETTL, reflectors, and so many more light modifiers. That being said, if Peter choses to make those videos, I'd definitely watch them. His videos are just so well put together!

Having also seen the positive reviews, I purchased this flash and the matching controller for about $100 US total last year. It certainly works well enough for my needs. The controller is capable of triggering multiple flash units for those that need more complex lighting arrangements. Long story short: this is a better investment for getting started with flash rather than spending the cost of another camera to get the matching brand name flash.

You've done an amazing job and I really like your videos. However I have used a Yongnuo YN568 and now own a Godox TT685C for use with my Canon EOS 700D/Rebel T5i. 1) The Godox has a better build quality. The Yongnuo I used sounded like cracking when held. 2) The Godox has faster cycle times and manages power better. It has fast cycle times at 1/4 power or higher and has never heated my Eneloop batteries whereas the Yongnuo made them heat up after shooting in longer parties. 3) The Godox has a really nice user interface, especially if you're a Canon, Sony or Lumix user and used to scroll wheels. It makes changing settings much faster. 4) Godox flashes are relevant even after a system change. I want to change to Micro Four Thirds or Fuji and I know I can buy a new Godox and pair it with my Canon version for dual flash setups completely trouble-free.

The 685 version of Yongnuo flash for Nikon and Canon. They will do ETTL and ITTL. I have two of the Nikon version with a controller and they are great. The Zoom head will go to 200mm instead of 105 and do high speed sync. I prefer to use natural light or ambient light when possible. But sometimes just to adjust the output to 1/8 power to fill in or throw just enough light to separate the subject from the background makes any flash / speedlite worth having. The controller like any other manufacturer can and will do three separate channels and handle several flashes. I don’t have advanced equipment and my camera won’t do high speed sync. But the flashes I have were 1/3 the price of flashes made by the major camera companies.

Nice to see you talk about flash Pete, but currently the crowd favorite budget option is Godox. You should definitely check it out! TT600/TT685 are more feature rich options, and the slightly more expensive V850II and V860II have lithium ion batteries that are significantly faster at recycling than AA speedlights. Not to mention Godox has an insanely diverse set of tools beyond the speedlight, that all work off the same internal radio system. They also have cross compatibility between all the big camera brands, so you don't have to replace your flash system if you change brands.

I'm not a pro, but my family ask me to take photos at their birthdays and similar reunions. So I got 2 Yongnuo 565exII flashes and Yongnuo wireless triggers all of them ETTL. My camera is just the tiny SL1 but i have managed to get some really nice pictures, and I can easily make a set up for basic product-photography. You can DIY some diffusers and improve your lighting for a few bucks. Yongnuo ETTL for canon have really good results. The only improve would be lithium batteries. This is a really good recomendation for those who want to learn more but cant spend thousands. Like me. Thanks Peter.
@SeisKyomi5 жыл бұрын
This flash is actually somewhat cheaper than 99$. If you actually have around 100$ I'd recommend the YN 600 EX RT II for about 108$. I own two of them and they have never let me down. They also come with a great TTL system and you can either wirelessly control one flash with another or use the controller built for the system. It's also compatible with Canon's flash system.

Once I had to shoot a groom and bride on their wedding day before the evening party, but they arrived to the photoshoot site very late, almost at sunset, and all I had was an 24-105mm 4L + 50mm 1.8, and a Canon flash without any modifiers/dome. We were in some sort of a village and planned to take poses in different locations as fast as possible. Each couple of meters we walked, and having the camera on full manual, I had to dial in the power of the flash manually to get the best of the ambient light, and each time directing the flash on the best available surface to recreate a huge source of light. Then readjust the camera accordingly. The flash direction was being adjusted like 10-15 times every minute. 30 mins in, and I was literally soaked in my clothes it felt like a sports tournament rather than a photoshoot. That is one day I will never forget. But thankfully it was worth it, and the results were way more creative than anything I'd have achieved at good daylight.

Things I've noticed about the Yongnuo speedlites from 2 years of use: 1. Overheating on brighter settings. I have to stop and take the batteries out because sometimes it got too hot and shut itself off after only 60-70 shots. 2. The plastic notches that keep the battery door closed are easy to break off. (carry a small roll of gaffer tape so you can tape it shut if you have to) 3. They're cheap but effective. 4. Slow recycle when using brighter settings sometimes 3-5 secs so I wouldn't rely on it for fast paced events where you need to get the shot. 5. They are very simple to use and the wireless trigger system makes controlling multiple speedlites a breeze. Great for when you want to use a lot of lights to pop light in creative ways around a dark courtyard, or for hiding a bunch around churches to accent the background. In conclusion, a great beginner flash, good for slower paced shoots, but if you need something that can keep up with a fast paced workflow, you might want to spend a little more cash and get a Godox.

I just bought two Godox flashes and a trigger for less than $200, and they came with diffusers and gels. I set one of the flashes at low power and stuck it behind my subject and fired away. I almost forgot, they also support high speed sync. I used a Yongnuo for 2 years and it served me well until I broke it last weekend. I almost replaced it with the same model, but the Godox trigger seemed more streamlined, plus my two flash/trigger setup was cheaper. TTL sucks, setting the power manually on each flash gives better results.

Peter, I'm so happy I found your channel today! Who said a video about a flash couldn't get anyone's attention 😄 The content was delivered with practical tips and humour. Looking forward to watching your other stuff!

for $120 ish Yongnuo offers the YN600EX-RT II which has E-TTL support and they also have the triggers - it all works quite well for me - I have 3 I use constantly. My big tip is to find the rechargeable batteries that charge in 0:15 minutes - game changer! It's possible to charge from your car's lighter socket with the version I have. Boom!

PETER MCKINNON IS THE MAN! So much so that he's inspired me to create my own channel showcasing the behind the scenes of my photoshoots and offering photography tips. If anyone would like to follow me along on this journey, that would be awesome!

Even if view wise it doesn't get the most attention, my favorite video of yours are related to gear and tutorials. I appreciate it that you make them!

Can you make a video about flash photography and how to use a flash. It would be awesome if you made one. Thanks!
