A Backpacker's Travels to Turkeyie ㅡ [1] Hierapolis, Denizli

♣ On Hierapolis ♣
Hierapolis of Phrygia (Turkeyie) was one of the most important Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine cities in Asia Minor.
And it is called the “Holy City,” and this will give you an overview of what you’ll encounter as you discover the site, as most visitors enter from the South Gate.
It is critical to note that there are three entrances to the ancient city!
The Northern Entrance allows access at the very end of the archaeological park near the Northern Necropolis.
This is not the main entrance and will require you to walk 20 minutes through the Necropolis to get to the main section of ruins.
And now it is located in what is now Pamukkale in south-central Turkeyie.
Because the Greeks founded the city of Hierapolis in the 7th century BCE and later became a Roman colony, it was an important stop on the trade route between East and West.
In the 1st century it was part of an area made up of three cities, Laodicea, Colossae and Hierapolis. This connection between the cities can be seen in the reference Paul makes in his epistle to the Colossians (Col 4:13). Before 70 AD Philip (the apostle or evangelist) moved to Hierapolis, where he is believed to have been martyred.
The city of Hierapolis in Anatolia, Turkeyie was built close to the hot springs of Pamukkale.
Visitors have been coming to Hierapolis and Pamukkale for centuries to take the “healing waters”.
The Greco-Roman ruins here are interesting, but the Hierapolis theater is stunning
There’s been a settlement at Hierapolis - Pamukkale since 190 BC when Eumenes II founded the city of Hierapolis. After reading the material at Pamukkale about how many diseases and afflictions the water flowing down the terraces can heal, it’s little wonder that visitors have come here for centuries. It was a prosperous city, no doubt due to all the spa tourists heading here in the hope of cures for various ailments.
The city was named after the wife of the hero Telefos, “Hiera” - and the name Hierapolis means sacred or holy city. It was famed for the sacred hot springs, the steam and airs of which were associated with the God of the underworld, Pluto. There is even reputed to be a sealed-off cave with toxic air that leads to, it’s said, the underworld.
♣ On Hierapolis ♣
Phrygia( Pamukkale의 옛 이름)의 Hierapolis는 소아시아에서 가장 중요한 헬레니즘, 로마, 비잔틴 도시 중 하나였다.
“신성한 도시”라는 의미를 지니고 있으며 대부분의 방문자가 남문(미니버스에서 내려 도보로 5분 정도 거리)에서 들어오기 때문에 이곳을 통해 이 유적지를 발견하면서 만나게 될 내용에 대한 개요를 얻을 수 있는 Hierapolis는 현재 터키 중남부의 Pamukkale에 위치 해있다.
Hierapolis에는 세 개의 입구가 있다는 점에 유의하는 것이 중요하다!
북쪽 입구는 북부 묘지 근처 고고학 공원의 맨 끝에 접근할 수 있게 해주는데 이는 정문이 아니며 폐허의 주요 구역에 가려면 묘지를 통과하여 20분을 걸어야 한다(입구 무덤 영상 업로딩은 계속될 예정임).

그리스인들이 기원전 7세기에 Hierapolis라는 도시를 건설하고 나중에 로마의 식민지가 되었기 때문에 이곳은 동서양 무역로의 중요한 기착지였다.
1세기에는 Laodicea, Colossae, Hierapolis 세 도시로 구성된 지역의 일부였다.

Eumenes II가 Hierapolis 도시를 설립한 기원전 190년부터 Hierapolis-Pamukkale에 정착지가 이미 존재했다. 테라스 (실내에서 직접 밖으로 나갈 수 있도록 꾸며, 길이나 정원 쪽으로 뻗쳐 나온 곳을 의미함)에서 흐르는 물이 얼마나 많은 질병과 고통을 치료할 수 있는지에 대한 Pamukkale의 자료를 읽고 나면 방문객들이 수세기 동안 이곳을 찾는 것은 전혀 놀라운 일이 아니다. 다양한 질병의 치료를 바라며 이곳으로 향하는 온천 관광객들로 인해 의심할 여지가 없을 정도로 번영하는 도시였다.
이 도시는 영웅 Telefos의 아내인 "Hiera"의 이름을 따서 명명되었으며, Hierapolis라는 이름은 “신성한 도시”라는 의미다. 이곳은 지하 세계의 신인 Plutonium과 관련된 증기와 공기가 있는 신성한 온천으로 유명했다.

♣On NECTROPOLIS ♣
Necropolis (“City of the Dead”), in archeology, the extensive and elaborate burial grounds of an ancient city. In the Mediterranean world, cemeteries were customarily located outside cities and often consisted of several cemeteries used at different times over several centuries. The location of the cemeteries was that in Greece and Rome, cemeteries often lined roads leading out of the city.
The Northern Necropolis is one of the largest cemeteries in Turkey and includes graves from the 2nd century BC to the 3rd century AD. It contains tombs from all kinds of different religious traditions, including several prominent Jewish tombs. There is also the massive Tomb of the Curses. Multiple burial styles are also represented across this diverse assemblage, including Tumulus barrow-type tombs (Hellenistic age), house-type funeral buildings (2nd century), and sarcophagi.
Necropolis('죽은 자의 도시'를 의미함)는 고고학에서 고대 도시의 광대하고 정교한 묘지를 가리킨다.
지중해 세계에서 묘지는 관습적으로 도시 외곽에 위치했으며 종종 수세기에 걸쳐 서로 다른 시기에 사용된 여러 묘지로 구성되었다.

♣On NECTROPOLIS ♣ The northern Necropolis of Hierapolis in Phrygia (modern-day Pamukkale, Turkey) with many different types of tombs. This extensive necropolis of about 1,200 tombs extends for over two kilometres (1.2 miles) from the northern to the eastern and southern sections of the old city. Most tombs date from the late Hellenic period, but there are also a considerable number from the Roman and early Christian periods. The Necropolis of Hierapolis is notable for its impressive architectural features and elaborate decorations. Many of the tombs are carved out of natural rock formations with ornate facades and intricate reliefs depicting scenes from everyday life, mythological tales, and religious iconography.
