My Dad was a steam engine driver.He passed away last year at 90. We use to go to the rail museums he would climb up in to the cabs of all the steamies he drove pull the Regulator back and with a big sparkle in his eyes think he was 20 years old again. I miss him.Thanks for the video

Every one of the 200 or so engines from Woodham's yard, as far as I know, escaped being scrapped, although some will never steam again they will live as parts for others. However, there were 16000 locos withdrawn by the end of steam, some of which were almost new. Which, in hindsight, looks like a crazy waste of resource. Thanks very much, Ernest Marples, the man behind Beeching, and the man who made the decisions, who incidentally had large interests in roads and road transport...

Mis-titled video! A great year for a scrap yard is a better title! Delightful to see! I like the scrap pile @ 1:10, the removed steam chests & driving linkages throughout video, exposed boiler @ 2:07, rust conquering the boiler shroud @ 2:34, graffiti @ 3:02, the strip down @ 3:21 & the scrap yard operation of these old relics @ 3:32! I like seeing these things being junked, cut apart, demolished & melting! Junk the steam locomotives & their tenders! 41 years ago & never coming back! Junk!

Real men poured their souls into each and every one of those machines, breathed life into metal and fire. These machines worked as faithfully as they could, and when old and tired, they were tossed to the side, dissabled with cuts made my younger men, and left to die. This is sade.

Interresting to see 71000 Duke of Gloucester minus cylinders at 1.26.. they went to the Science Museum at the time I believe. It's also great to see so many videos of the "Duke" in full steam again having been left to rot in wales.

What we must remember is that the uniqueness of Barry's Scrapyard and it's owner Dai Woodham meant ALL of these engines went on to be saved or reused to fix other steam engines, the last one that left was in 1990 and was a large prairie built by the GWR.

I'm 45 now, when I was 10ish, family went to Butlins at Barry Island, probably in a purple British Leyland "Maxi" , Dad found us a hole in the fence and we spent a couple of days climbing about on these rusting hulks, nobody came telling us to go, no health and safety crap like now, just a square mile of industrial history to climb/play about on, hope all those loco's made it to the owners/restoration people who had their names painted on them, wish I'd had a 1080p camcorder when I was 10 !!!

@Colormepearl What many people do not understand about the steam locomotive, is that they started to beat themselves to death, the moment they were released from the manufacturer. The maintenance on these engines was astronomical. The cost to bring one of these beasts back to life, depending on the deterioration, and, most of all, the condition of the boiler, would break most of the wealthiest people in this country. I'm afraid that they are like many things, only a symbol now of a simpler time

@14omega28ok A gas tank doesn't contain enough high pressure working fluid to tear itself apart and send shards of itself flying for hundreds of meters, and it doesn't depend on active monitoring and lots of parts doing their job properly to maintain structural integrity. I get what you're saying. When you actually go around looking inside a steam locomotive, it's... hard to describe. It's art and science, it's history, nostalgia and beauty. But I'm glad I never had to actually work IN one.

If it were practical, and it isn't, i would like to see many of them restored and saved. As for boring, being an old man it doesn't take much to entertain me. I understand that you may like sparks and parts flying. I do too and l watch ship scrapping vids for that fix.

Rickey Mitchell Ah well Ricky, I am not only an expert in scrapping, but also in preservation. You'll be pleased to know that these pictures were taken at Barry Scrapyard, where only a small number of the locos were scrapped. So actually 213 locos were saved from this yard, and it was in fact practical to see nearly all of what you see in the video saved, and some restored.

@KateFan . Yes, I remember the North British diesel loco ( 00:21 ) in the 'seventies'. Some of the last locos to leave the yard went to Wales Railway Centre, Cardiff (1988-1989), and I remember getting underneath to grease the bearings before the locos were moved. There is now a Railway Preservation group at Barry, see map of their network at Wikipedia "Barry_Island_Railway".

Actually, only 2 engines fro Barry went under the cutters torches and only the Barry 10 still need restoration work. These 10 are still in scrapyard condition but are all safe and are given some protection from the weather to prevent further decay. Whether they will ever see steam again is unlikely unfortunately.

@mmikeironhorse Whenever I see a long coal hopper train or a long container train there is only ever one diesel (usually a class 66) pulling it. You're thinking of super long trains in the US. You'd probably need more than two steam engines for that, not to mention the effort involved. A steam engines power is often determining by the size of its wheels. A diesel however, doesn't need giant wheels. It can haul heavy loads without much slippage on a set of much smaller wheels.

Actually the very first diesel engines came about at the start of the 20th century. Plus, the electric powered locomotives which were around even at the end of the 19th century. So even before the glory days of the 20th century, steam had a rival.

I don't get why so many people hate on diesels and such. Steam engines are wonderful things but they require so much more effort to maintain not to mention infrastructure. You can't just stop and go off at the end of the day with a steam engine. It's fire needs dropping, it needs oiling and it's firebox needs to be cleaned (which is no easy or pleasent task) A diesel just needs to be filled up. At the night you can just switch off and go home, plus the effort of driving it is much less.

@theredraven wait were talking about british railways? lol. i thought we were talking about american for a second. well in that case american steam engines were a lot more powerful than others. A UP Challenger #3985 once pulled a 143 car long double stack train all by itself. that normally does take like 6 diesels.
@theredraven
@theredraven 14 жыл бұрын
Why would you want to replace stuff that's cheaper and faster? Not to mention that steam engines require more infrastructure. A diesel needs a shed and a tank of diesel to fill up. A steam engine needs a water tower, coaling tower, turntable and a shed, plus requires much more effort to maintain. BR didn't even bother to clean them at the end because it took too long.

So.... Let us be thankful, very thankful, for the beasts that a few of the wealthy RR companies have invested millions in, to bring back to life, for PR purposes. A few insightful people have saved a part of our heritage for the generations to come. However, those insightful people did not just recently decide to get an old engine and fix it up. Engines like UP has restored, were set aside and kept in a condition where they were financially feasible to restore, at a later date. Nice video though

But to do that you need to have money, a place for them to go and then have the ability to restore them to working order. Plus, when you have several thousand, how do you decide? Do you keep humble tank engines or might LMS Garrets?

Steam locomotives never lived! They do not have any life organisms within them. Steam is nothing but water vapor. Today, steam locomotives are nothing more than junk & should all be turned into melt for new products. It is great to see these clunkers lined up waiting their fate at their scrap yard. It is like watching the executioner! Off with their boilers! Off with their steam chests! Off with their whistles! Off with their gauge sets! Off with their driving linkage! Melt them all!
