One day 30 years ago people living in the USSR woke up and saw Swan Lake being shown on TV. Behind the scenes, an attempt to overthrow the government had begun in the Soviet Union as factions of the political élite tried to remove Mikhail Gorbachev from power. The Soviet Communists tightened the screws on the media and and attempted to snuff out press freedoms. But the journalists fought back against the censorship and won. Their victory, however, was short lived.
