Fellow Physics teacher here. I just found your channel and watched four videos in a row and found them all really funny and thought that they explained the contents in a very light, but perfectly understandable and logical way. Congratulations on having found a setting that is so hilarious (the four copies of you in different clothes & characters, mimicking class interactions) that it immediately captures the viewer's attention and creates a live class atmosphere that allows for a natural flow of Q&A. I can only imagine how much time and effort you must have put into all these videos and just want to thank you sincerely for this, in the name of Physics didactics in general and also in my own name (I will definitely use this material in future classes to point certain things out and visualize them!) and in the name of my students in particular, who will be very soon introduced to your channel for review purposes... :) There is so much Maths stuff out there, it is usually no problem to find good review pages and explanations on most common Maths topics to recommend to students who want to review & practice a topic at home, but in Physics this can sometimes be very difficult. Therefore I'm really excited that you provide such excellent & funny review material here. May I ask if you ever received a didactics award for this? Honestly, by quality this is right up there with many major resources like www.physicsclassroom.com, www.leifiphysik.de (in German) and even the legendary Walter Lewin lectures. Excellent work! Thank you so much - in Lewin's words - for the love of Physics. :)

Wow. What a lovely comment. Thanks for all your kind words. You give me high praise. With regards to didactics awards, no, unfortunately, I have not received any. Perhaps you could nominate me for one? That would be wonderful. Also, you do not have to imagine how much time and effort I put into these videos. You can watch the process here: flippingphysics.com/making-a-video.html I hope you and your students enjoy the videos!

@@FlippingPhysics I think I have actually never written any comments on KZbin before, but here I just had the feeling that I need to tell you as a colleague how much I admire your dedication to your work. Your students are clearly very lucky to have you as a teacher, some parts in the first introduction videos about learning together and not focussing on other people's mistakes but rather on your own learning (in the video on rounding/sig. fig.s) also tell me that you really care about a positive learning atmosphere, which I also find very important in my class. Physics is beautiful and we need to include as many interested people as possible in this wonderful science without making anybody feel bad or stupid because he/she doesn't understand a concept on first glance. Unfortunately I am not a member of any committee that decides about recommendations/nominations for Physics didactics awards - but if I ever hear of any Physics didactics award where nominations can be submitted by anyone, I will definitely recommend you/your page. I believe you highly deserve such recognition for your work on this brilliant project - something beyond the praise of fellow Physics teachers... ;) Thank you as well for the link to the video, I'll watch it right now. In general, I think I will pass the next few weeks slowly working through these excellent materials that you have created. I might also write you an e-mail some time soon - maybe I'm able to give back to you with a few ideas/demonstrations that worked out very nicely for me and made for some very fun classes... :) I'll also try to translate/caption a few of your videos in German & Spanish if there is still a need for that (I better leave Portuguese & French to others who are more fluent in these languages). Kind regards from the Swiss School in Querétaro, Mexico - Arne (that's me).

I have a question Flipping Physics I am having trouble with negative/positive acceleration with dots and arrows that go up and down as opposed to left/right. I.E if I have a series of dots going downward and the arrows are short and progressively get longer is that acceleration in a negative direction? Or say if the dots are long and get short going upward? I hope my question makes sense.
@FlippingPhysics9 жыл бұрын
Hmmmm. Dots and arrows. My assumption is that the dots identify the location of the object and the arrows represent the velocity of the object. I think I have a video which will help answer your question. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Zpy0o61qmcuretk I use a basketball instead of dots and I have arrows for both velocity and acceleration. Because the acceleration is constant and down the incline, this is actually just like it would be in the vertical direction, there would be a constant downward acceleration (in free fall). Hope the video helps.

Flipping Physics I had just one question: What is the reason why we have the rule that when an object slows down, the acceleration goes in the opposite direction? I know that velocity (and all vector quantities) are direction-conscious, but is there a way to visualize the reason why we have this rule?
@FlippingPhysics9 жыл бұрын
aquagem baby Really, just one question? The "reason why" the acceleration is in the opposite direction from the velocity when an object slows down comes directly from the equation for acceleration. Acceleration = (velocity final - velocity initial) / (time final - time initial). Assuming you live in the universe I do and time always moves forward, (time final - time initial) will always be positive. Any values you plug in for (velocity final - velocity initial) will illustrate that an object that is speeding up will have an acceleration in the same direction as the velocity and an object that is slowing down will have an acceleration in the opposite direction as the velocity. If you watch my video kzbin.info/www/bejne/Zpy0o61qmcuretk and pay close attention to the magnitudes and directions of the acceleration and velocity vector arrows in the illustrations, that should help with visualization. There is one example where the ball is speeding up and one where it is slowing down.
@junglebaby4489 жыл бұрын
Ohh I see so it is simply b/c time does not go backwards? Thank you!
@junglebaby4489 жыл бұрын
In the video you linked to, an object slowing down can still have acceleration initially correct? Like the second example of the ball? Also, "Uniformly Accelerated Motion" is this the same thing as "Constant Acceleration"?

Hi sir ! I love your videos. Please tell that does the acceleration always decrease when the velocity is decreasing ? Because it is called deceleration which I think increases when the velocity decreases. 🤕😵
@FlippingPhysics2 жыл бұрын
I purposely avoid using the term "deceleration" because it does not really mean anything. As shown in the video, an object can have a negative acceleration and be speeding up if it is moving in a negative direction.
@syntacticcave95142 жыл бұрын
@@FlippingPhysics So if a body is moving with decreasing velocity which means that its velocity is changing which is acceleration (acceleration = change in velocity ). How can we define this acceleration ?

So there's a negative and positive just because this is charted on a graph? In reality, when you're speeding up, and I'm standing on either directions of you while you're speeding up, is there actually a negative and positive difference? I don't get that. It just depends on frame of reference and direction?
@FlippingPhysics7 жыл бұрын
The whole concept of negative and positive with regards to the direction and object is moving is always relative to a frame of reference. Otherwise what would "negative" or "positive" even mean?
@narayanankannan68786 жыл бұрын
When you look on one side you could see + acceleration ( seems to be right )and if you see on other side you would see - acceleration ( seems to be left )

When bike slowing down means bike moves at right its acceleration wil be at left ,as there will be some force that it compel to left??
@carultch2 жыл бұрын
Given a bike initially moving to your right (suppose you are a stationary observer on the sidewalk). When it is slowing down, the net force on the bike acts to your left. This is could be the traction pushing backward on the tires as a result of the rider applying the brakes, or it could be air drag pushing backwards on the frontal area of the rider + bike. Or a combination of the two. You could achieve the same result, and visualize it, if the cyclist were tethered on a flexible rubber cord on your far left side to a fixed object. The cord is initially slack while the cyclist pedals up to speed, and then the cyclist coasts once the cord starts to tense. The rubber cord pulls against the rider's motion as it stretches. Here, you can see that the rubber cord is pulling leftward on the cyclist. Disclaimer: I don't recommend actually attempting this bike & tether experiment. I recommend considering it as a thought experiment, or trying a scaled down version with toys, and less risk of injury.

So are you assuming that positive displacement is to the right? Thats why when you speed up to the left velocity is negative and acceleration is negative?

"It is possible that an object can be increasing in speed when its acceleration is decreasing as in case of a raindrop" Can you explain this statement
@splatitup68627 жыл бұрын
For example, when a raindrop first falls out of the cloud, it's speed is 10 m/s and its acceleration at first is 9.8 m/s^2. This means that its speed increases 9.8 m/s per second. So at 1 second, its speed is 10 m/s. At 2 seconds, its speed is 19.8 m/s. At 3 seconds, its speed is 29.6 m/s. But because of air resistance, its acceleration decreases to 5 m/s^2. So at 4 seconds, its speed is 34.6 m/s. At 5 seconds, its speed is 39.6 m/s. Thus, the raindrop is isn't accelerating as fast but its speed is still increasing.

I am confused on the negative and postive acceleration, flipping physics. So if you go to the right, are you positive no matter if you go fast or slow? Same goes with going to the left, if you are negative no matter if you go fast or slow? Thank you!
@FlippingPhysics9 жыл бұрын
+BIG LFC A positive velocity means the object is moving to the right (regardless of speed). A negative velocity means the object is moving to the left (regardless of speed). Note: Up, North and East are positive. Down, South and West are negative. Also Note: These positive and negative directions are simply common conventions.
@luiscavazos9 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I have one more question. Why is it when velocity is negative and slowing down, acceleration is positive.However when velocity is positive and slowing down, acceleration is negative. Does velocity affect if acceleration is negative or positive? Thank you!
@FlippingPhysics9 жыл бұрын
+BIG LFC It comes down to the equation for acceleration, which is very hard to describe in a KZbin comment, which is why I make these videos. Look at the way it works out in the equation in this video and then plug in some numbers for each of the two examples you propose and see what happens.

What if there was another person taking a video on the other side of the road, that would mean that the bike was going to the right based from his reference... Another thing.. so when you go out from your house every morning, all the cars that you see that that go to the left with high speed are all in negative acceleration?? and all the cars speeding up to the right are in positive acceleration?? Please explain,.. I got confused... Thanks...

You are absolutely correct. "Positive" and "Negative" depend on your frame of reference. Always stick with ONE frame of reference when working a problem.
@kennethmcneil95403 жыл бұрын
I was going to jump in here and explain but it seems like Carl all ready did. Yes Chesley with all of these problems, well with physics it's self it is about your frame of referance. This is a very relitive point towards how Einstein discovered the Theory of Relativity. When you are deriving something, or in other words finding a solution, you have to take into consideration frame of referance.

@carultch2 жыл бұрын
Negative value of the net force implies that the object has an acceleration in the negative direction. I.e. in the direction that is opposite the direction we assigned arbitrarily as positive. Negative value of just one force doesn't imply anything, since just one force is not enough information to conclude the net force acting on the object. There could be several different forces acting on the object. Maybe they add up to zero, maybe they add up in a completely different direction.
