It’s amazing skill and technique, but is technique art or is it how technique is applied? I’d argue that Johnny Mathis has an artful interpretation of Misty, and he doesn’t sing like an opera singer. I’m not disagreeing that Mr.Miller is an amazing singer and artist. Just wondering why opera is at the top of the art of singing in your opinion, and would like to hear your point of view.

And THAT is the difference between a basso profundo and an oktavist. An oktavist's job is to hit absurdly low pitches, as part of a choir. A basso profundo is a soloist. He must be able to SING the notes, not just grunt them. If an oktavist can hit the note, and project a little, he's golden. He doesn't have to sound pretty. Many basso profundos can sing oktavist parts,.but basso profundo arias usually don't go quite as deep as oktavist parts. Basso profundos who can actually SING in oktavist ranges are sometimes called contra basses. @Ioannis_Tsoumaris has an interesting three-part series on the difference it the three ranges.

@Hanfgurkenhasser7 жыл бұрын
I really doubt he'd be able to hit the high notes, given his depth. Sinatra was a pure baritone, and a high one at that. Believe me, I'm a high baritone myself and I sound pretty much alike. Still wish I were a bass singer but oh well. :P Can't have everything. Dat depth tho...sexy.
@monsieurboks6 жыл бұрын
By definition "operatic" singing is about as casual and natural as you can get.
@kabo22464 жыл бұрын
@@monsieurboks Yes and no. Depends what you call "natural" singing. When men sing higher notes, it's natural for the vocal chords to go up and switch into falsetto. An opera singer learns to trick his vocal chords into staying in the same position as if singing lower notes therefore singing higher pitched notes without switching to falsetto. About bass notes tho - i guess, there isn't really any other way to sing them if we don't go into tiny details

Not the famous band leader, no. This is American profundo Glenn Miller. He is the only oktavist to ever record the low G as originally written by Chesnokov in "Ne Otverzhi Mene" with a full choir. Listen here: Basso Profundos and Oktavists - Vol. 2
@TheOktavismChannel10 жыл бұрын
***** No, Glenn is the only one to have recorded it. With the Orthodox Singers, Wichniakov sings the latter ending, but interpolates a low G, though it's difficult to hear since the other two basses are singing G2. Andrey Kurilov recorded the original ending with good volume, but pitched up a half step, so the lowest note is Ab1. Though others have performed this ending I'm sure, there aren't any other recordings.

K barber, what is the difference between an oktavist and a basso profundo?
@anastasiadenton9 жыл бұрын
+jacob lahr Use of the vocalist & the setting mostly. Essentially Chesnokov has 2 classifications for Oktavists & BOTH are technically Basso Profundo voices as well. Oktavists are used mostly in the countries that were formerly part of the various incarnations of Russia (Over several centuries) mainly in religious settings & the like. Different countries (Italy, France, Russia, Sweden et al ) all came up with different ways to classify singers so essentially for the average person it's just WHERE the music is coming from. A Basso singing for an opera house OUTSIDE of performing Russian works tends to use their voice a bit differently then someone that strictly focuses on Russian pieces. Vladimir Miller & his Trio have some amazing Basso Profundo pieces as well as having participated in various choral arrangements as Oktavists & Barber's site has LOTS of examples of these amazing gentlemen doing both.
@MultiKamil978 жыл бұрын

@Alexander Abdalla Yeah, I wonder where John Ames would be. Definitely a second right?
@bradycall1889 Жыл бұрын
@alexanderabdalla5517 Kurt Moll has a mix of tapes that make him seem like a profondo and others that make him seem like a basso cantante. He's a gray area to me. He has struggled with a D2 before, his timbre wasn't dark at all in the mid and high range, and he didn't have much overtone richness like I expect most basses to have. He did, however, have a lot of volume output like a bass should have. I think he's probably just a regular, standard basso profondo tbh (in fact, a high profondo, and a lightened one), but a part of me thinks that he might be a type 1 oktavist. Vladimir Miller said he could go down to F1 when warming up 🤷♂🤷♂🤷♂.

M.R. F.B. Opera basso profundo singers usually don't use subharmonics. If they had to use this then it would mean they're not true basso profundo. Basso profundo should be able to hit Bb 1 and below with chest voice.
