I'm Australian, but went to college at U. Illinois (late 80s), with a legion of Da Bears fans. After Walter Payton the next player they loved was Butkus. Even back then Dick Butkus had a great reputation off the field, that was the complete opposite to his nature on the field. I was actually at the Illini game where they retired his number (it was #50 at the Illinois not #51 which was his Bears number). One of his sons was playing at Illinois when I was there. I can't specifically remember meeting him but I may have passed paths with him as I knew a few football players through being on the swim team. His reputation was like his father, ferocious on the field and buckets of fun off the field. I'm Niners fan but very, very happy to see Da Bears win a game especially on such a day.

As always, great stuff Tom. In honor of the great Dick Butkus, I will tell y'all a classic story. I grew up N of Chicago and was lucky enough to have Dave Williams (WR for the St Louis Cardinals in the late 60's) as a football mentor in hm HS. Anyway, giant of a man, and he said one time he did a nasty crack back block on Butkus. So after the play, Dick came up to him and said "if u do that again, I'll break your fcking foot." I asked him "so what did u do???".. he said, "This is the NFL, u never back down from anyone." So a few series later, Dave does another crack back on Butkus...and as he is exiting the field, sure enough Butkus runs up from behind him & stomps on his foot! Shattering several bones & ending his season. 👀 Crazy times. Well.. Dick, your were legendary & a bad mthrfcker. I'm sure he is having some good laughs with Nitschke, Walter & the rest tonight... RIP.
