Antigua was very quiet and less touristy 42 years ago when I first visited. The character of the structures seem pretty much the same and well preserved. Consider going to Solola on market day. It's up around Lago Atitlan. The dominant tribe there has a wonderful fabric that they wear.

I just found your channel and really enjoyed the video. I just like to comment on the idea of finding the ‘the real Mayan people’. There’s no such thing. Historically there was a Mayan civilization made by different groups of peoples. Drought, climate change, disease and civil unrest are some of the causes for the mayan civilization declining and then Spanish conquistadors where the final stroke but the people did not disappear. There are more than twenty DIFFERENT ethnic groups separated by language and culture. And you can see it just by looking at the different types of colors and patterns of their clothing. Similar situation in the US, there are many different cultures but we all live under the same government. We may called ourselves American or US citizens but there are differences depending on were your ascendants came from. YOU ARE LIVING MY DREAM! I live vicariously through you. Thank you 🙏🏽 😊
@TheYarbros Жыл бұрын
Yes, we find remnants of these civilizations throughout The Americas. Interesting to see the different cultures & physical characteristics that dominate certain areas sometimes living a city or two away. Humanity is such a celebration of diversity. Thanks fornwatching and commenting.

Buenos dias! I loved Antigua and spent 9 months there way back in 1994. A group of us decided to do a night ascent of Agua. For those reading Agua towers over Antgua at over 12,000 feet (3500 meters.) After we were dropped off, a local told us that a battle had happened at the base earlier that day and the guerrillas receded into the mountain. It was night so we weren't going to be able to go back to Antigua so decided to go ahead and climb Agua. I was hiking with two Germans and was about 90% of the way up the mountain. A combination of arriving that day to Guatemala, visiting a bar, a torrential downpour most of the hike, and some issue with acclimatization left me feeling sick. The Germans walked ahead of me. They were never seen again. It was thought the guerrillas may have killed them. About two thirds of the way up we could see Mt. Pacaya blowing up.

When at this city, visit as many eatery places this city has to offer. There are foods from others countries. Many small Cafes, breweries and wine places you may stop and enjoy a drink or two. Take a Tuc Tuc (motorcycle taxi) to give you a quick tour of the city ($30 two or three hours) and return on your own to those places you want to take your time getting to know more. It is a very safe city and there is no presence of police around.

I have been here for a few weeks and I had no idea about the Bosque. The lack of green space is one of the biggest drawbacks of Antigua in my opinion, especially since it is impossible to relax in any of the plazas without being approached by vendors. I understand that the people have no other way to make a living though. Hope you guys do make it to Atitlan. While there is obviously tourism there as well, you can also find villages that are purely Mayan and get very few gringos, like Santa Catarina Palopo, San Lucas, Santiago, etc.

So you have a couple of options during the b4 times we always took the coach. There is an ADO terminal at the airport where you can take a bus to the main terminal in Cancun city and then you can...to Puerto Morelos.....in the aftertimes we did a couple of private cars to Merida costly but convenient esp. for those red eye flight. Interesting video . A little history about the masks that creeped you out . “In battle, courageous Mayan warriors put on wooden masks as a way to intimidate their enemies. They believed that the deities and spirits represented in their masks would give them spiritual power and protect them from danger.” As for the Mayan lady speaking different languages, it does not come as a surprise. In Guatemala we are encouraged to learn different languages. Antigua is full of European expats because not only is Antigua beautiful, but has many language schools in comparison to other Hispanic countries . I have a cousin. Who knows 7 languages fluently.
