In this weeks video we take a look at a truly beautiful process! African Cichlid Egg turning into fry over the course of 24 days in a breeding tumbler.
African Cichlids are mouth brooding cichlids who's females hold fertilized eggs in their mouth until they are free swimming after a average period of 25 days. In the wild the Mother will then release the free swimming fry & they will be free to fend for themselves & find food to help them grow.
However in this video we take a look at this amazing process through the use of an egg tumbler meaning that we can see the full growth & progression of these fry as they slowly mature which is awesome to see!
This is a common technique to use when breeding African Cichlids as it puts less stress on the females, as they can eat again & it also is said to increase the amount of eggs/fry you will strip from the female as some may get swallowed in the natural 'tumbling' process!

I wrote an article and studied the development stages of cichlids and particularly mouthbrooder eggs, drawing at every stage every day after fertilization. Write this 40 years ago. Also stripping eggs lets mother recover faster, grows bigger and faster and has increasingly larger broods of eggs. There is actually a measurable increase in size and weight, albeit slight of the eggs themselves in this process.

ATF intheHouse I would agree. The mothers tend to swallow some during the tumbling process & stripping them allows them to get back to eating faster👍🏻 thanks for watching & sharing your knowledge👌🏻

Heya! Love the video. I don't know if you're still gonna reply since this video is quite old now, but I was wondering.. does every Cichlid kind lay the eggs and then afterwards carry them in their mouth? Since we have some Zebra Cichlids, and we noticed that after around 2 days that they had laid eggs on some wood, the eggs had disappeared. And we're planning to get a fry soon for them, but I just get get any specific info about that through research, so I was curious if you perhaps knew :]

@cichlidscape
@cichlidscape 5 жыл бұрын
ken wood lighting doesn’t matter during this time ken. All you need to make sure of is that the eggs are moving...that way they don’t get fungus on them or anything like that👍🏻 i found this level of movement works well when tumbling but I’m sure you could go a little more or a little less if you needed too. Thanks for watching my friend

Nice video. What is the difference between putting the eggs in the tumbler compared to just transferring the female cichlid in a separate tank and let nature takes its course?
@cichlidscape
@cichlidscape 6 жыл бұрын
Christopher Flores good question👍🏻 for me it’s all about numbers. A lot of the time even if you moved the female they would still swallow a few unknowingly throughout the tumbling process. This is even more precedent in younger females who haven’t held before. These eggs were the first this female had & so I wanted to make sure I got the fry. These are the first “line breeding” group of mine. So they should be studs!👍🏻 thanks for watching!
