Traverse City, Michigan beautifully located on the Grand Traverse Bay off of Lake Michigan. Traverse City consistently ranks amongst the nations top tourist towns. It's also a great place to live. There's a lot of things to go do and see in the beautiful landscape surrounding Traverse City.

My family moved to TC in 1972. Lots of memories there. Attended all levels of school including when there was only 1 High School the Traverse City Trojans now TC Central HS. Also attended NW Michigan College (then Community College). The city has continued to grow especially in the summer and during Cherry Festival (I always hated it when the tourists would come and trash our beaches and streams). TC was a beautiful, safe place to grow up. Seems it has changed but also stayed the same. I moved to Seattle in 2005 to escape the winters. But do sometimes miss Northern Michigan/Lake Michigan in the summers. Cheers from Seattle! :-)

This is my home, born and raised (and still living here), and I used to be so proud that it was my hometown, but I feel like it betrays young people, unless you earn $50 k and up. I still live at home, trying to pay enough student loans off to make it on my own. Even if you get a great job, like I feel I have found, most jobs do not pay enough for you to keep up the cost of living here. It's turning into a cash grab, and it breaks my heart. I wish this city did more to keep its people instead of force them out. I'll still always love it, but I wish it loved me. Also, I'm surprised you went through Gallagher Road (the gate used to be up after school), TC West was my High School and it was pretty great. Glad it has an A-! My physics teacher was the best teacher I've ever had.

Wow, a lot of negative comments and pessimism. TC and Northwestern Michigan aren’t perfect, but I still say despite any problems, frustrations with jobs, or complaints about costs, the whole area is still by far my very favorite in the whole state. I grew up in northern central Michigan, and spent a fair amount of time coming up to the area to ski, golf, stay on the lakes, and just relax. They’re some of the very best times in my life, even with some I’ve had around the world, and I still occasionally get back up to the TC area every few years despite living out of state now. The whole area is really the gem in Michigan’s crown in my opinion.

Dan Majerle (Thunder Dan) was born here and went to TC Central. Traverse City has more Millennial Millonaires than any zip code in the United States. It’s also well known as a top 5 foodie town with its trendy restaurants. Wine tasting and tours, microbreweries are also really popular. If you love the water this is your place., but keep in mind A popular local saying “A view of the bay, is half the pay”. It is a great place to raise a family. We see a lot of young adults leave though for jobs, but then they come back. If you can find a job you love that pays well here then Traverse City is perfect. I would say a top place to visit. Especially for a weekend trip. Tons of things to do here for singles and for families year round. A must visit for July’s National Cherry Festival. A week long event of fun. Over 150 Events and activities. Including 2 separate parades, air shows (including the Blue angels), Concerts, foot races, and lots of Cherries to eat.

I love this area but its become increasingly expensive to live here. I lived here very briefly in 2017 but my job didn't work out. At 4:13 you drove right past the apartments that I lived in, on Gray Rd. I have family in the area and have been a frequent visitor my entire life, so I've seen the changes that have taken place first hand. I remember when a lot of the areas outside of the city were still relatively undeveloped. I thought I'd enjoy living there but it wasn't quite what I thought it'd be, mostly because of the cost of living and my displeasure with my job, but I wish it had worked out.

Family roots began here in the 30's. Opportunity caused moves elsewhere and this became summer/winter family vacation retirement property. 6th generation have moved up there year round albeit with slim job prospects desperately trying to keep the family property from becoming an airbnb or rental but East Bay Township high property taxes are so ridiculous they are almost forcing our hand. This is a wonderful place to vacation, many treasured memories. HOWEVER. This is not a young person's town. The cost of living is outrageous if you are trying to rent or have to buy or pay a mortgage on top of taxes. How a young family can manage has to be difficult and is not in line with wages that are paid. I don't know how things became so unbalanced but the town cannot sustain this for long.

My guess is back in the day, people put them up there as a cheap alternative to a cabin, if i had to bet and to note I use to live in the Mayville area. So ive seen my fair share amount of trailer's on plot's but this was mass and im willing to bet someone is gonna back me on this

You can thank all the baby-boomers that had affordable college and affordable health care all throughout their lives who bought 2ond homes up here and only live up here half the year and only contribute to the economic activity accordingly and drive up the cost of housing accordingly. They won't allow smaller\affordable homes to be built, and if they do, they want crazy money for it. My neighbor bought a brand-new 600 sq ft home, for 170 THOUSAND or so. Ridiculous.

Frank Stulen and John Parsons invented numerical manufacturing also known as CAM, computer aided Manufacturing, here in Traverse City in the late 1940's. It was first applied to machining helicopter rotor blades. In 1985 they were invited the White House by President Regan and present an award by Secretary of Commerce, Malcom Baldrige, for starting the second industrial revolution. We are proud of NMC the first community college in the state and a very fine one. 20fathoms start up tech incubator. More happening here than just tourism.

Thanks for your video. To bad you didn’t actually drive down into the main part of Bay Harbor, also Bay Front park and marina that you drove right by on the water taking in the waterfall and beautiful views in Petoskey. I noticed you saying not a vacant store front in downtown Petoskey. But your drive went by at least 8 vacant store fronts and on the other Main Street (Lake st) there were plenty more. (It’s sad) I’ve lived in this area now for 23 years. Don’t get me wrong, I love what you’re doing! What a great hobby or a way of living for you to share. To bad you didn’t drive through Bay View community and take in those old homes dating back to the 1800’s since you drove right by them. So many more things to look at and I realize and is tough knowing what and where they all are. You know what might help is try to find a person from the area that you’re thinking of recording to ask or even ride along showing you the area and maybe hidden gems of that area. Enough said, but keep up doing what you love because we in this crazy world enjoy viewing them! 👍✌️

I lived in TC in the 80's and the exact same problems then have never been addressed by the city and never will. It's for wealthy to retire and have summer homes. You have to start your own small business or live in a tent and work for nothing. There are real places you can move to. There is life after TC.

the only people who actually stay here are retired old people and the wealthy during the summers. the average rent prices here are near LA prices...nobody comes to TC to start a new life. "growing" as in more people come to this city to fade away.

Its beautiful, but housing is a joke. Everyone is hiring, but no one wants to pay a living wage and they're VERY picky about who they hire. Its pretty much impossible to find anything for less than $1200/mo. I lived in midtown Detroit for a couple years and payed $600/mo for everything( i.e rent and utilities).

My opinion: TC has better restaurants and drinking scene than D. Better bike paths through town, better access to outdoor fun activities, also virtually no crime in comparison. I live here and my mortgage is only $700, bought my house when I was 23 on my own in 2017. Zoned commercial in downtown elk rapids. Not TC but just as nice and only 15 minutes to three mile. Every job I have had since living here (I have left 3 jobs to go work elsewhere based on being bored with the jobs I was doing) has paid at least 20 an hour. I didn't work in the service industry either, which is a good way to make some serious cash, I know people who take the slow 4 months off each year and don't work because they make so much in the summer making drinks. Also you can get a tiny home built for $80k + $20k property if you have good credit. There are ways, but if you want to live downtown anywhere that's as nice as TC, you are going to pay more. Detroit isn't that desirable of a place to live. That's why so much of the population that lives here is originally from SE MI. Myself being one of them.

Does Michigan have a good business climate? Or is it bad like Illinois?
@ChrisHarden
@ChrisHarden 3 жыл бұрын
Michigan doesn’t seem to have the same issues as Illinois. There’s been many added jobs in the state over the last decade to replace the ones that left in “Michigan’s lost decade” which was from 2000-2010. It’s not perfect in Michigan but I would say that it’s in a better spot currently than Illinois is.

I lived in TC for 12 years. Its a nice town but I couldnt take the 6 months of frozen tundra anymore. So many deaths on icy roads every year. Also pay is low but housing high. It was getting more and more liberal every year. I moved to Arizona.

I totally agree. I'm born and raised and they don't seem to care about the general population, but rather the wealthy (especially the retired and the wealthy). Makes me sad because this is my home and I thought it would care about me as I have cared about it.

I grew up here and now moving to Lakeland, Florida. Rent is too expensive, housing is ridiculous. It's not 'booming' at all, thanks to our Governor dealing with pandemic issues. Everyone is right in the comments, cost of living is AWFUL. I pay $1280.00 for a one bedroom apt AND they're going to raise my rent another $30.00 when my lease is up next month. Had enough, don't care for the winters anymore either. Traverse City, you can polish a turd but you can't shine a fart. ;)

Its not that hard to put a mask on your face. We wouldn’t have to lockdown if ppl took any reasonable precautions. You cant have it both ways. Or you can forfeit your hospital rights if you get sick so they don’t get overcrowded. Time to grow up. Its not all about you.
