Hi Ruky. Welcome back to AFL. We missed your smile. 😀Most people say Aussie rules is a mash-up of lots of sports, but it predates them all. The oldest football club in the world is Melbourne FC. It was founded in 1858 after the rules were codified, so this game predates soccer, basketball and the current versions of Rugby. The game is fast, tough, and spectacular to watch. Footy is only played professionally Downunder, but there are lots of amateur teams in other countries. Imagine if this game was introduced as an Olympic sport. Our team would crush all-commers. We'd have a zillion gold medals!! LOL. Cheers from Aus.

Many places were playing informal versions of football well before 1858 and some of these shared as much in common with modern rugby or association football as AFL shares with Melbourne rules. However, because none of these were officially codified or there's not a clear decent to the modern game, Melbourne rules are the oldest codified set of rules that have clearly evolved into a current major football code. So it's actually not clear that AFL didn't take influence from other versions that existed before the modern variants. In fact, Melbourne rules almost certainly had influence from earlier versions of football similar to modern rugby and modern Gaelic football. Also, Melbourne FC is also not the oldest football club, but the oldest *professional* football club. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oldest_football_clubs. AFL footy is based on Keeping's Off and the rules are designed to allow all body types to participate. Players can move the ball via a kick or handball (hold the hall in one hand and use the other fist to knock it to a teammate) The ball is mostly kept moving. as being caught in possesion of the ball is a turn over. The only time the ball stops moving is for a Free Kick (failure to move the ball on correctly), a Mark (to catch a kicked ball) when players are given 8 seconds to move the ball on... or a Ball-Up (stalemate when the ball is trapped in dispute) when the umpire throws the ball into the air to resume play. Teams try to create a miss-match advantage using size, speed, strength, changing team set up based on opponent and weather. Players will converge on the ball to gain possession, then spread out to provide a target when they gain possession. Strategies used are : man on man or zone defense : Screens and blocks to free up forwards : Fast break or controlled possession : of any combination switching constantly. Though many players have some special talent, marking (catching the ball), kicking etc. they all need to be multi-skilled and super fit to run hard all game. As noted : Unlike most sports that try to maintain possession of the ball at all costs... AFL footy is based on Keeping's Off Therefore caught Holding the Ball is a turnover. Contention arises as players will disguise intentionally holding the ball to stop play when outnumbered to prevent an advantage breakaway or to disrupt the momentum. Players are extremely skilled at doing this, so the umpire has to make a judgement call on not just the actions, but on situational awareness. Any attempt to slow play is not allowed. Often in a close finish the umpires will put the whistle away and let the players fight for possession to keep the ball alive. Then the umpire will award a soft free kick to break up congestion to keep the ball moving. This makes it very difficult for newbies to understand the flexible rules. This is referred to as The Spirit of the Game ie: Play the ball, not the man, not the clock. Keep watching... it comes with understanding the moment in the game Thanks for the entertaining reaction

We jokingly refer to it in the state of NSW as aerial ping pong because we don't really play it here. We do have AFL teams but it's only really played in border regions with Victoria other than the 2 Sydney AFL teams of course. The vast majority of players come from Victoria

You left out Ireland, England, Scotland and America who have had (and currently still have)representatives at the highest level. As for NSW as far as I know the Riverina and Wagga are still within the border too and have made major contributions to the playing lists of VFL/AFL clubs over the past century or so.

Men ,women and kids all play . This dominates all other sport in Australia. It was first codified I'm 1859 ,yes it's an old game . This pre-dates all other football codes . That's right soccer ,rugby and NFL all were codified after our GREAT GAME . Edit - people from all the continents ( except Antarctica) have played at elite level . It's an inclusive sport.

@@Mr4thQTR Dominates is a fair assessment considering the NRL positions it's games to avoid clashing with AFL due to crowd losses . They also changed the time of the GRAND FINAL. Not wanting to risk going up against AFL Finals . Last but not least Soccer became a summer sport .

@@Mr4thQTR I’m from NSW and can confirm that the Sydney Swans are superior over every NRL team. GWS are still somewhat new so they’ll take time to grow. The only places in NSW that AFL isn’t superior at the moment is from the Central Coast to Ballina and Western Sydney

RUKY You can play it yourself in America. Search for the, “USAFL.” They have 40 different leagues, “including a women’s league.” Because it’s amateur, it is nowhere near as brutal as our professional game. It’s more a social game with beers and barbecue afterwards. Next season starting in March you can find broadcasts of our games. I’m told it’s available on a fox soccer channel. It’s also played as amateur in the UK, Thailand, and many other places. Yes it has lots of sports combined but we started it. Invented in 1858, it was codified, (meaning it was played in an organised competition.) before any of the other sports. Those 100,000 fans are one big happy family which includes children. We don’t have problems with violence like some overseas sports. Only the odd idiot because everyone’s there to enjoy the game. Different supporters are all grouped together, there is no segregation of different fans. Aussie rules is the glue that holds our society together and is virtually a religion. Cheers for liking the greatest gamer on the planet.

In answer to your question about South Africans playing Aussie rules: not really. Their main code would be rugby union, I think. The game was invented in Australia (Melbourne) in 1858 and is really only played in Australia, and is really only very popular in Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia, Tasmania and Northern Territory. The traditional code in Queensland, New South Wales (other than a section in the south called the Riverina) and the Australian Capital Territory is rugby league. However, the AFL has made a big push into these regions and started new teams and relocated Victorian teams into these states and the sport is growing there. There are some amateur Aussie rules competitions overseas which often feature a mix of expat Australians as well as locals keen to try something new. However, it is very much a minority sport overseas. Ireland plays Gaelic football, which has some similarities, although it uses a rectangular pitch, a round ball and there is no tackling and the games developed mostly independently of one another. The AFL and Gaelic Athletic Association developed a hybrid game called International rules and there have been several games between Australia and Ireland, but these are infrequent and not supported as strongly as the local versions. Every 2 years, the AFL hosts teams representing different countries playing Aussie rules in Australia in the International Cup, in an effort to promote the game overseas. The countries that tend to do well include Ireland and Papua New Guinea. AFL games including exhibition games (in the UK - I went to one at the Oval in London, Japan, USA and Canada) and games for points (in China and New Zealand) have been played overseas. AFL players have also been recruited from overseas, including Ireland, Canada and USA.

Give it 20 years and it’ll be good. If you look at the oldest Grand Finals in the sport the scores were similar to what they are now. The kids of the current players will be much better

@@OldFossil I have thought myself that the scores look like very early games. However, the game was much, much different then, it would hardly resemble today's game.

@@OldFossil Very early games in the 1800's were played on huge grounds the size of paddocks with very different rules. The game would barely be recognisable as the same game played today. I don't think the women are ever going to be able to kick as far as the blokes and so they need to shorten the grounds to to kick more goals. I think the skills can and will improve it's the lack of scoring that's killing the game.
