Bokashi is method of composting food waste that originated in Japan. The process uses fermentation, allowing bokashi to be both "odorless" and small scale. Both the liquid drainings (Bokashi tea) and the decomposed scraps (bokashi) from your bucket are extremely nutritious for your soil. This composting method is on the rise as it is a convenient option for gardeners and apartment dwellers alike.
Estimated Cost: $15
Materials:
2 5-gal. buckets
an airtight lid
Drill (with ⅛ in. drill bit)
Bokashi Bran
Masher
Paper or aluminum plate
Instructions for Making Bucket:
1) Drill holes into the bottom of one bucket. (Enough so that liquid in the bucket can easily drain off.)
2) Stack the bucket with the holes in the other.
3) Top with the lid, and tape the Bucket Labels/Directions to your bucket for reference. Now you can start composting!
To Add Food Scraps:
1) Check bottom bucket to see if it needs draining. (Liquids can be used as a liquid fertilizer and diluted 1 tsp. per gal of water; use within a day of collection.)
2) Layer food waste, sprinkling about 1-2 Tbsp. of bran every 2” layer.
3) Press down on food using masher to remove air.
4) Cover with plate.
To start new bucket: add about ½ c. of the Bokashi Bran to bottom.
When bucket is full: Cover and let sit undisturbed for 2 weeks before adding to garden, flower pots, or worm farm.
Remember:
* Bokashi compost is acidic and can damage young plant’s roots. Wait 2 weeks after burying before planting in in the buried area.
*When collecting food scraps for your bokashi throughout the week, store them in the fridge to prevent aerobic bacteria from colonizing. Otherwise, those aerobic bacteria will overpower the anaerobic microbes in your Bokashi Bran.

FINALLY a helpful video! I have been trying (unsuccessfully) to compost and I only have a patio so I can’t do heavy duty composting which 99% of the how to videos on here are for. The small bucket composting videos are lacking in instructions. So I’ve been doing researching for a month before I found this video and I finally feel like I can do this 👍 I am a kitten foster so I have TONS of those empty heavy duty plastic kitty litter buckets that I HATE to throw away and are just piling up outside. I’m hoping to be able to create multiple compost buckets instead of 1 giant one that I can never turn.

Please someone can tell me how to use the precompost on the balcony. I haven’t any garden, just pots, so my only chance is to work it maybe in a 5gal container half and half with potting soil? Maybe trying to avoid any peat moss based one? Please explain thanks

This is a great video, but I have a question. I am about to start my first bin, but where I live it is 28 degrees and the ground will be frozen for a couple more months, making it impossible for me to sow this in before then. What happens if I just leave it for 2 months? Will it hurt anything?

Do you find a tablespoon of bran was enough per layer? Other video seem to suggest a lot more. Trying to see if bokashi will be economically feasable since the bran mix is quite expensive in my area.

Do you keep layering compost and bran for two week periods until the whole bucket is full?
@Livingwiththeflow
@Livingwiththeflow 6 жыл бұрын
You can keep adding layers at any time! Once the bucket is full, it then has to sit for two weeks without anything else being added to it. That gives the last layer of food time to ferment before the bokashi is used.

@FlyingBalcony
@FlyingBalcony 4 жыл бұрын
No, it shouldn't smell bad, it should only ferment, not rot. Did you add a plate or a cover over the compost? ( not the lid) Also, did you add enough starter? Maybe not enough microbes or too much food waste for them to digest

I've heard of that method too! For right now, I'm using the bokashi with the minimal waiting time, so I don't run out of space for more food scraps, but next winter I think I'll try this. It's hard to bury bokashi when the grounds frozen so may as well just let it sit and use the tea that drains!

Green mold are actually good. It's fungi of trichoderma sp, which are parasite to other fungi and can be used for bio fungicide. They form symbiosis with the plant's root. I culture them separately and use them to help with germination. But usually they aren't able to compete with rapid grower pro biotics like saccharomyces or rhizopus (white mold).
