I was excited to come across this video. I live in Baltimore, MD, USA and we have a G&S group here in town. For my birthday this year a friend took me to see "Ruddigore." It was a first for both of us and we had a wonderful time. The Young Victorian players is a group of very talented singers of all ages who never disappoint the audience. I look forward to seeing them every summer for my birthday.

I used to spend the summers following around the D`Oyly Carte troupe when John Reed did the comic roles. I was there in Brighton and Eastbourne and London and everywhere else. Once when having a cup of coffee before the show (could have been Southend) Reed came in to the theatre cafe. `You here again?` he said. It was only then I realized he must have noticed me. I never saw Martyn Green do the comic roles but Reed was exceptional. There is nothing really that compares to Gilbert and Sullivan. Many try though.

Lovely. I just discovered your group (having listened to The Mikado several times). I will watch it again & all the other sites. I'm American (living in Italy) & my mom (from Glasgow) was a pianist. My parents took me to see The Mikado when I was about 15, love at first vision. I have an LP, 2 VHSs, a DVD & 3 CDs of the Mikado. Now I am watching the operetas on my cell phone on You Tube.

Well done. Excellent all round. My favourite was the lady doing a patter-speed summary of the plot of "The Grand Duke" at the end. And I've learnt something useful today - sausage rolls go back at least to Edwardian times - and they even wrote a song about them !

I had to turn the sound up because I'm slightly deaf, but that's OK. I've recently watched "The Mikado" and "HMS Pinafore" and really enjoyed them. I wanted to know more about Gilbert & Sullivan's works, so put this video on. Next I'll be watching "Pirates of Penzance". I love the upbeat, satiric humor of these light operas!

thanks for this, i’ve recently discovered Gilbert & Sullivan because of The Simpsons (particularly the episode Cape Feare) and loved what i heard, so i’ve watched a bit of both HMS Pinafore and The Mikado and liked them a lot more than i expected. I’ll have to go finish them and then watch everything else, i really like the oddly specific brand of British humor in the music

I love Arthur Sullivan, having heard some of his other compositions. I understand his frustration with the GnS operetta though. Having listened to the entire catalogue several times to try and get a better understanding of it, I cant help feeling that his musical choices were restricted by Gilbert's busy, repetitive lyrics.

A great partnership no doubt yet these are the only operettas commonly known by both librettist and composer. Why? In any other case it would be considered an insult to the composer especially with the librettist's name coming first. Who knows, or indeed cares, who acted as Offenbach's librettist?
