A Beginner's Guide to the Lower Yough Loop

Here's a quick beginner's guide to the rapids on the Loop of the Lower Yough. Hopefully this will be helpful for someone looking to run these rapids for the first time. This was taken at slightly lower water; probably about 1.5-2 ft. on the Ohiopyle gauge.

Worked on the yough many years ago with an outdoor group from Butler County Community College called Encounter 4. We did this section of the Yough with particapants and fellow staff inlcluding both entire middle and lower yough sections. Many great memories brought back by this movie for this section both at low to high water levels. We called the river gods rapids that got you - hodads! whether it be in the loop, dimples or swimmers. I remember one set of large boulders about quarter mile from the lower yough take out that didn't have a name. As you wound yourself through this last group of boulders( about as big as 3-5 large pickup trucks) there was a beautiful small to medium sized single surfing wave). It was only small to medium difficulty with nothing nasty below it but class 1 to the takeout. Because it was the last sizable wave to play on and at the end of the river, I spent many fun moments there playing on it. This jar any memories from anyone? is it still there?

I think I know exactly the wave you're talking about, but I moved away from PA 7 years ago so not sure if it is still there. Would love to go back and run the Yough again!

At the time this vid was taken I worked in MD and lived near Pittsburgh; I'd go home on the weekends and stop at the Loop to run it before the sun went down, but I'd usually only have 45 minutes or so to get through before needing to get back on the road. Not much time for playing around, unfortunately.
