I think motion activation is a fluid term defined by the way a particular camera implements it. Parking mode is not a common feature on the cheaper cameras I test, but they usually have an option for motion detection, but they power down completely when the ignition is switched off.

Ray, for some reason I can't respond to your comment directly, so I'll reply here. I think that all of the playback software for the GPS cameras I've tested is Windows only. Non GPS cameras rarely come with any software. The video files created by most cameras can be played on any machine that has the appropriate video playback software. Macs will play .mov and .mp4 files natively.

Anyone considering a dash cam for the first time (like me) and with limited tech savvy (like me) should watch this video. You cover all the main aspects of this new consumer electronic device, one I think will become a standard item in cars of the future, much like seat belts and CD players were in the past. Thank you for a very informative video sprinkled here and there with dry humor that I appreciate so much!

At the moment I'd recommend the Mini 0801 - or the Mobius if you can find a suitable way to mount it. Both are reviewed in my channel and both are small and discrete.
@Techmoan
@Techmoan 11 жыл бұрын
I did cover this in the video. You can motion activation and/or remember to unplug the camera and switch it on and off manually or get a switched power socket fitted.

Aside from pulling it apart and sticking a new heat sink on it, there probably isn't much you can do. I don't know much about really hot weather, and its not a spec that gets mentioned. It's best to get feedback from other hot climate users to see what they recommend. I believe the Mini 0801 has been working fine in some hot places.

@Mikie C it might be an idea to get a camera with a tripod mount...like the SJCAM M10 then you can buy replacement suction cup tripod mounts. Alternatively you could try adhesive mounts, but the heat might affect the adhesion.

Your explanations are clear , concise and to be honest you outshine many many so called reviewers on television. I'm sure u could get a audition on many programmes and media to do this as a side line to your normal job.Well done, from a weet Wales new Subscriber !!

The only car cams that need to come with playback software are the models with GPS. I use a Mac myself and always say if the software for these models is PC only (all the GPS software I've used so far has been). Dashcams with LCD screens are usually self contained devices which don't need a computer. Video files can usually be replayed off an SD card on any computer. DONT PANIC.

A lot of people use Registrator Viewer without any issues. You may want to have a look at the Dashcam Talk website for more info about this software. I think it's supposed to be the best software at the moment. Thank you for the kind words too.

Shorter segments are easier to copy and import into editing software, but on the flip side its more likely that an event will be split across a couple of clips. I usually use 1 min if its an option. Really it just comes down to personal preference.

I'm a professional cameraman and I'm sure you've already been told this.....but you should be on TV. You are more natural and talented at presenting than 'some' of the presenters I've worked with ....who were doing it for a living and were getting paid well for their time. Are you using auto cue on this video?....I suspect you aren't....it's all presented from your memory? Either way, I think it's time you got aired professionally on broadcast channels.

cvsdigital Yes it's all ad-libbed but there are a heck of a lot of failed attempts before I get something that works. I think my technique would probably drive programme makers crazy. Thanks for the compliments, it always a much needed ego boost to hear things like this.

For a g-sensor to work like that it needs to save the file currently being recorded...so the camera would have to be recording all the time, even when parked...then we get into issues with battery drain etc. I suppose a g-sensor could potentially switch on a camera from a low-power standby state...but it would take about 5-10 secs for a camera to wake up and start recording...much too long to catch anything happening, and again the camera would have to be powered up.

I think I've watched all your car cam videos plus others that interested me. I learned a heckuva lot from you. The camera I eventually purchased, it's on the way to me now, is the Mio MiVue 358. It's not one you've reviewed but I saw reviews and video from it elsewhere and with the knowledge I'd gained from your videos, I knew it was the one for me. Thanks, Matt!

I tried it with two 808 keyring cams once. It sort of worked, but then I used the Sony MHS-FS3 (3D Bloggie) and realised that I wasn't really interested in recording in 3D after all.

I'm not recommending any cams I've tested at the moment. I liked the performance of the DR32, but since my review the price has increased and people have reported issues. It's too big for me anyway, I'm concerned it could be mistaken for a satnav.

so glad you pointed out the problem with the G-sensor and road bumps. I don't buy a car DVR that has a G-sensor that can't be turned off. but I would like to ask: you mentioned formatting the memory card to get rid of G-sensor protected footage/files. can't one just delete those files when plugging the device/memory card to the computer via USB ? every two weeks or so....

good point! I live in Los Angeles where the sunlight is simply brutal. So far I had no camera (I have tried a few) fail because of heat, but I assume they will age quicker. The same is probably true for extremely low temperatures. I'm not really concerned, though. The average price is around $100 and every year a newer, better camera is out and I replace my old one anyway. So I'm not really concerned with long term durability.

Hello, I know this is an old video but now in 2017 the goluk T3 addresses almost all of the problems you have stated. The T3 has a capacitor so it won't fry in the sun, the g sensor and motion sensor record 6 seconds before and after and incident, it's very small and discrete and finally it's very good value at about £90 on Amazon. Oh and also it has great low light video quality as well.

Well presented video sir - good effort. I agree with most of the points you've made. It seems that a lot of the features offered are unnecessary. You just need something discrete with good night vision. I'm not too bothered about GPS either - I know where I am and a listed speed is a bad idea - 5 mph over and you're stuffed on a technicality. So may I ask which (H264) model do you recommend? My Ford 12V supply runs for 30 mins after the engine is switched off - problem? Many Thanks

Just as a thought on G sensors, perhaps the idea is that should you be so badly hurt that you can't get to your camera or car to switch it off the video is saved should the car be taken away for examination. Also some cig lighter sockets don't switch off with the engine, so if you got into a bad accident the vid would continue recording if the camera was left in the car due to you not being able to collect it. Your vids are excellent by the way.
