He takes the alapana, which is already an abstract form of the raga unlike a composition, and takes it to another level of abstraction! And Lalgudi responds to it with an equally abstract and brilliant Kalyani! Having heard this Kalyani many many times, I feel this alapana is so brilliant because it doesn't seem to borrow ideas from any existing compositions... or if it does, there is some great dexterity in the robbery!

Standing on a sea-shore, one sees waves rise and fall. A cool breeze, moist and welcoming wefts across, a Kalyani blooms in the mind. The rAga -AlApana is as calm and warm as sea-breeze, both the mind and heart feels at peace. With waves rising and falling, all notes in Kalyani do the same in the AlApana. A mood of reverence and divinity sets-in. With a voice dipped in honey, made from the flowers of Spring, with an appeal to a mother from her child, with such an intimacy yet devotion in nature, BMK gAru sings the AlApana. With a natural flow of abundant brigAs and modal shifts and pure bhAvam, the long-detailed rAga -AlApana fills one’s heart and eyes. A fitting follower on the Violin is Lalgudi gAru, who glorifies the appeal of BMK with all melody and grandeur. With melodious thuds and sweet lyrics, as one progresses through the listening to the rendition, one cannot help but imagine what it must have felt like to witness the same in live! When BMK sings the sAhitya-vinyAsam, there is no mistaking the longing of the child, for the grace of his mother. Saint Tyagaraja says, one’s birth is fulfilled, all the thirst is quenched, all riches are obtained, on seeing you, Oh mother of the world! The same can be said about this Kalyani, all music thirst is quenched, all melody treasures are obtained, all hearts are filled, all eyes are moist, all minds are in resonance, all hands are folded in prayer to Her, all ears ringing with BMK’s music, all riches obtained. It seems like there is no greater joy to be experienced in this world. Such is the offering of BMK to his mother, such is the joy of Saint Tyagaraja on seeing Tripura Sundari. Following this blissful rendezvous, the calm sea, rises high with the svara-tides and washes over the listener with intellectual joy. Both the violin and mridangam unite with BMK in bringing out, what is to many, THE Kalyani, THE Sundari nee divya roopamu, THE essence of music.

This one rendition is worth many hours/days of study. While Dr.BMK and LGJ are glaringly outstanding, I think some of the touches from UKS has enhanced this whole piece. The laya sukham UKS provides to pick up "mandagamana"(32:15) is one of the numerous examples of the rapport between BMK/UKS as well.
@csbalachandran7 жыл бұрын
I agree totally! To see BMK and UKS (and MSG) on stage is to see true sahrdayas having a grand old time in front of us. They always showed amazing rapport. This resulted in a unique kind of anticipation of each other, and a profound sensitivity to the whole process. Each knew what buttons to push to draw out the best in the others.
