A Better Crab Pot Design

I had one of my crab pots torn up by a shark to the point that it was beyond repair, so I went over to Mr Bait to get a new one. I had seen these odd-looking crab pots at his shop for a while now but since I was not in the market for any new ones, I did not pay them much attention.
Now that I was, I asked about them and Frank demonstrated how they worked. I was an immediate convert, this new design solved all of the things that I didn’t like about the “standard” design with PVC uprights.
I got my replacement and took it out crabbing. Check out the video and see what you think. I reckon they are a great idea and make handling the pots in a small boat much easier. I can bait these pots and then pop the up quickly just before I drop them. Normally with the “standard” pots I have to fully assemble two or three and then I have run out of room until I drop them but with these new pots being so quick to put up I can get them all ready and just pop them up immediately before I drop them.

Thanks, 4 for $200 as opposed to BCF 5 for $50 at the moment, reckon they catch 4 times as many crabs? Thanks for the video.

I reckon they catch just as many crabs as any *heavy duty* pot. I tried those lightweight ones from BCF, I now use them for decorations in the boat shed. Too light and move in the current unless you put a brick in them. These ones are comparable to any of the heavy duty brands, I don't need a brick and they are more convenient to use. If you are getting good catches with the light ones, stick with them until fisheries gets around to banning them.

The PVC is 25mm diameter. The pots I like the best are the ones with the aluminium supports, 25mm x 4mm twisted for strength.

My dad taught me that knot for hooks. He called it a Snood knot

It could have more than one name. An old professional fisherman taught it to me when I was just a kid, I only discovered that it had any name about a year ago.

Love how easy these pots are, especially being a elderly women on her own crabbing. I just hate that around where I crab if you have a good pot they take the pot.

I have four of those heavy duty pots and they’re great. Last week I ended up with a huge Wobbegong Shark in a pot (11kg) and the pot was perfectly fine and the shark safely released. Well worth the money.

Yeah, you gotta wonder how they manage to fit in sometimes. I don't know what sort of shark shredded the pot I had to replace but I think he was pretty angry about being trapped inside it. Heavy duty pots are the only way to go though, most of the time mine survive a shark with little or no damage.

You're welcome. A dish sponge soaked in fish oil. Helps when you haven't got an oily type of fish for bait.
