Your explanation for seeking out an array of instructors/instructions makes perfect sense to me. You can mine, or cherry pick both what works for you internally, while also adding to your own coaching/teaching/instructing "tool belt." Coach Paige? HELL YES. Even sitting through the odd bad classes, or having to endure something that doesn't fit, can provide massive utility through contrast. "This is what I don't like," or "How not to do it, in the future," etc.

Great tips Paige I found my game really improved when I started walking the course. You eliminate all the distractions, so you can focus on your next shot approaching your ball. You have all of your clubs with you in case you want to change. You can sense changes in the wind and the ground and the grass. You don't hold up your group, running back to the cart because you can't find your ball etc.

I can definitely empathize with your reasons for not keeping a handicap for a while. I completely blow up every tournament I try to play in, and I have also found my self-esteem being tied to my golf score, which isn't healthy, as you know. I almost got to scratch, hitting a low this season at 0.3 index. I'm trying to decide if I want to continue to try competitive golf or just have fun with my friends. Thanks for your videos!
@PaigeSpiranac2 ай бұрын
It's not healthy to be that stressed about it, and it's okay if competitive golf isn't for you! It took me a really long time to realize that I just didn't enjoy it and that not wanting to play competitively was fine. Congrats on such a great handicap though! Hopefully you can fine a way to make golf (mostly haha) enjoyable.

You do almost what I do for scoring/stats. For me, the four rows are PUTT, ATG, FH and GIR. Putt, Approach to Green, Fairways Hit, Greens In Regulation. Starting with the top, Putts are self explanatory. ATG is approach to green and that's on the top too. ATG counts shots to the green from when I can realistically hit the green. So on a par four, in theory the second shot I should hit the green from 185 for example. Great. But... I miss to the left. Ooops. Now I have a chip. I skull it. Now I have another chip. ATG is now 3. So Putts and ATG get added together to form the "top score." If I have a chip in, the putt is 0, but in theory the best score for Putts in 18 holes is 18. Same thing with ATG. Best score would be 18. That means every approach shot hit the green. On a par 3 the tee shot counts as an ATG shot. Now for the bottom scores. FH is fairways hit. On par 3 fringe or green count as FH. So I put a 1 in FH for each fairway hit or L/R for a miss left or right. Then I have Green In Regulation. That's either a 1 or a 0. Now add the bottom scores. A perfect score for 18 holes in the FH row is 18. A perfect score for GIR is also 18. So... scoring gives you two scores. To record the standard golf score all you do is use the par numbers printed on the card. Circles for birdies, squares for bogies, etc. Standard stuff. You don't write down a number. You're just some number over or under. Simple. Now for the other score... your TRUE score. You subtract the bottom two rows from the top two rows. That number is your true score. It tells your true golf story. You can't scramble or luck out and get it lower. When you focus on your true score you're not thinking things like "OK, I'm 3 over but there's a par 4 coming up and blah blah blah." Instead you're thinking "I've got to get this in the fairway." It causes you to focus on the shot at hand and actually think about how to get yourself in a position to "score." And like you said, it's a record. Now you can go out and focus on each part of the game separately. It really helps.

All my friends play and it is one way I can spend time with them so I'm trying to learn a bit to get down to 100 so I don't slow them down so much. Thanks for the tips. Especially the stats. I think that being a professional tournament golfer is about a lot more than having talent. There are very talented golfers everywhere, but not all of them want to, or are capable of, handling all of the stresses that come with it. Pressure to perform, travel, being away from family and friends a lot, just to name a few. It's not a knock on players as a golfer or a person if they just can't or don't want that lifestyle. It's simply not for everyone, and that's ok
@PaigeSpiranac2 ай бұрын
Absolutely. It's a completely different thing than enjoying and playing well at your local club with no pressure. There are so many things that make it hard outside of the golf skills.

Yips can be devastating. I'm sure you have read about the Ian Baker Finch story. His Yips started at The Open in St Andrews in 1995, playing with Arnold Palmer (his last tournament). Got steadily worse. Practice was perfect, but once he got onto the course for a tournament... By 1997, after he shot a 92 in first round at Royal Troon at The Open, he cried, withdrew from the tournament and immediately announced his retirement from professional golf and became a golf commentator.
