I was so nervous after seeing a few favs as chapters but was pleased to know it was due to aesthetic reasons. I’m so particular about my book covers too!! Wuthering Heights is one of my favorite books ever! So chilling - I think about those characters all the time. Room with a View was also lovely and I need to pick up more E.M. Forester.

hmmmm I say don't stress, I usually try to wait out reading slumps or sit down and read for like an hour or two and if I'm still not feeling it, stop and try another day. Maybe pick up a thriller or The Dutch House by Ann Patchett if you feel like a nice soft cry hahaha

As a colossal Jane Austen fan, I had to laugh (with good humor!) In an attempt to defend her, her works are often a commentary on the ridiculous social pressures women faced. Pride and Prejudice makes fun of these social pressures and the people who attempt with all their might to keep up with them. I would tell anyone who wants to try read Austen to start with P&P. Sense and Sensibility is probably not the best one to start with - in fact that was my least favorite one. However, everyone is different and entitled to their own opinion and even if we may disagree on certain authors, at least the common thing we have is our love for books which is always a great thing! 👍
@cs0p
@cs0p Жыл бұрын
hahaha fair fair fair--I think there may be merit to some of her work, she's just not for me when authors like forster, wilde, waugh, etc. +modern authors I love (and haven't read all their work) exist. If I ever finished all the books on my tbr, I would pick up p and p! But I'm trying to only pick up books I have a good chance of really loving. I might appreciate p and p for some aspects, but I'm sure I wouldn't love it. My favorite booktuber alana estelle loves her though! Go check out her videos!!

@@cs0p Yes totally legit on picking up books you think you'll love. I'm the same way - life is too short to waste on bad books or ones you don't really like. Surprisingly, I've never read Forster and I'm a classic lit lover. Maybe I will pick up one of his works! 👍

Would highly recommend Jane Harper's works if you are looking for good non-cringey crime thrillers! My favourite is The Lost Man and her most popular is The Dry which is also very good! Most of her stories are set in small-town outback Australia. She captures the atmosphere and mood of her settings very well and also incorporates them into the storyline convincingly. Love your channel btw!
@nna_oj
@nna_oj Жыл бұрын
ok i posted that comment before your spiel on non-fiction books 😂. I totally understand if reading non-fiction, sociology and psychology is not really your thing and you aren't interested in the subject area but books like Outliers and Sapiens are definitely not pseudo-science. They're largely based on credible research done by academics. I will admit that at times, authors can tend to draw conclusions from those studies to prove a point they are trying to make which may not exactly be demonstrated by the study itself. But overall, I find the discussion within those books really insightful. Even if the subject matter of the book and its main message may be very obvious to us (e.g. Outliers basically tells us that success depends on many factors including hard work and luck), I think the stories and examples they use to argue their points are very fascinating and often counterintuitive. And the things you take away from those books don't have to be what the book is trying to argue, it could be something you read between the lines on a more personal level. Like for me personally, the message in Outliers was not groundbreaking but the stories within it really helped me come to terms with imposter syndrome and feeling like I need to join the rat race for everything. Anyway, that's just my 2 cents on why non-fiction books are still worthwhile reads 😆

okay i completely understand not liking jane austen HOWEVER! part of understanding and enjoying her works is understanding that the entire thing is sarcasm. she’s a master of satire, and it is really hard to hear it if you listen to it on audiobook by old women. in pride and prejudice for example, the entire character of mr. collins and the reactions to him are genuinely hilarious. some of the interactions between elizabeth bennett and…anyone tbh, are funny as fuck but its so deadpan and serious that its hard to tell apart from other serious conversations (both in the book and in other 19th century lit) apologies for the rant lol, i just love austen and her influence on comedy and later satiric works cannot be overstated

have u read charlotte bronte’s letter to her friend talking about jane austen? “Why do you like Miss Austen so very much? I am puzzled on that point. What induced you to say that you would rather have written Pride & Prejudice or Tom Jones than any of the Waverly Novels? I had not seen Pride & Prejudice till I read that sentence of yours, and then I got the book and studied it. And what did I find? An accurate daguerreotyped portrait of a common-place face; a carefully-fenced, highly cultivated garden with neat borders and delicate flowers-but no glance of a bright vivid physiognomy-no open country-no fresh air-no blue hill-no bonny beck. I should hardly like to live with her ladies and gentlemen in their elegant but confined houses. These observations will probably irritate you, but I shall run the risk.” lol get her char

lmao I can relate to the Jane Austen hate. Well, I don't think I actually hate her anymore, I'm a little bit more open to her stuff after reading Persuasion, which had some nice writing and was a generally comfy read, but like... that's supposed to be her best, most mature book, and I only sort of liked it. I definitely still think she's way overrated. I couldn't imagine listening to audiobook versions, that seems like it would make the books even worse.
@cs0p

That's what I'm saying! I'm sure the books are like fine, just not for me not for me not for me and there are so many other way more talented writers I'll never spend time exploring her work
