Gary on the overhang don’t forget you had trusses. You have to make sure those trusses are still supported the way they need to be supported where you cut it off. They need support so that they do not twist and cave in on you so take your time and think about what you’re doing.

Nothing better, after a long day of a hot sweaty, sawdusty day, to have the kids just jump in the truck and head down to the lake. I close my eyes and can actually feel how refreshing that feels, cooling off & coming clean of all the grit! Memories are being made for sure!

and far more protection from the sun. . . . in all honesty, i do not like a mild tan on my face At all. So, i always don my cowboy hat when i exit the bungalow. And truth be told, i like the comments by the ladies who admire my white youthful countenance at 70 plus. Been lucky with the ladies . . . i had 4 decades when a simple hello was interpreted as a marriage proposal by 4 Babes each month. That was a wild adventure B4 becoming 60. Adam. ☺

I think I would leave the existing eaves alone if you can. If you want to build down a ceiling anyway, it doesn't hurt to leave them and IF you ever have to rework that deck or roof, you still have the original roof framing intact. But it's all up to your own vision of how you want it to turn out.

Arkansas, it really is paradise.....born and raised here, been to 12 states. I have always thought we had the most varied types of wildflowers....yes we have the heat, but that lets us grow so many more veggies as our season is so long....yep no other place I'd rather be.

Do the most structurally sound system for your house. Cut the overhang on the original roof now. I would have done it before you put the extinction on. But I trust you judgement. One thing when you put the metal roof on go 6 inches longer than the roof edge past the rafters ends. Then it will keep water from rotting the wood it will drip off past the rafters. My son used composite deck boards on the roof 3 feet up from the rafters end and up. To prevent rotting his cabin is in Gaylord Michigan. And gets lots of snow li 30 inches in a night. And lots of rain also.

I took my kids to the lakes in the summer months when they were about the same age as your children. When they got a little older I bought a new Bayliner ski boat we had so much fun teaching them how to ski. Never once had a problem with that boat. We had others before that one but ALWAYS had to work on them and they breakdown like on the Tennessee river. Not fun asking for help to get back to the boat launch miles away. Lots of memories..

i think i got it ! you mean the side on the kicker, you are thinking off either enclose the side that is facing were the garage is going to be or make a little thing that goes out from the edge rafter that could catch a little rain. if i am corret then i would choose both, and whit that i mean why not do like a ladder thing that you had on the "main" house and the other half is enclose,and if you do not want to build a ladder then you have a perfect one allready below the balcony rafter that you can reuse to that part. but i dunno if i am correct.

I still think it will be better to cut off the house eaves. It will make it cheaper and easier when you go to install the ceiling of the porch. You can attach your ceiling directly to the rafters without the eaves being in the way. -Eevee (Doug wrote the other one, haha) I guess there are options. XD

Good for you. It sounds like you hit up on a perfect plan. You are not getting any younger, the kiddos are out of school so. I truly believe accidents happen because we set a time limit and push ourselves to the point of exhaustion. I truly think you will get more work done and still have time to enjoy life. If you could get the deck done and roof on before really cold weather sets in you can work on the inside. ❤

Gary this end you are fishing, I think it would be a great place for the grill, which would be covered not used, you don’t need to block all the weather. no don't cut off the overhang....it will keep below drier when it rains...I'm talking on the long side...not the end things.....I can visualize a row of geraniums in plant hanger on the rail all along the sides....I have these wonderful metal holders that fit over the rail and my flowers looks s pretty, but you can also hang them from hooks in pretty macrame hangers...

i'm a bit reluctant about cutting off or shortening a lumber rib. It's good that Gary is cautious enough to sleep on the idea. One of many theories is that IF (by accident) there is a leak on the roof, then the drop off for the rain is away from walls of the house. That's the PURPOSE of an overhang, folks.
