I wanted to watch the "eyepatch-girl"-anime for a long time and when I saw that you made a 40min video about it, I finally decided to watch it in its entirety! While watching the anime, I never had the impression that Rikka didn't develop as a character, but i wasn't really able to put it into words! I just kinda thought:"why should she disregard her chuunibyou if it is clearly helping her and she likes it anyway?" On an audience level, I think many of us came to expect that there have to be clear cut stages of development, when in real life we develop within our current paradigms, changing them as we go along! That makes is sometimes so hard to look back and pinpoint the time we made a change. In this regard, Rikka is a very realistic character... I can't ignore the one final fatal flaw of your video though and I know it is a video about Rikka, but you did not mention the best girl even once: Kumin deserves better... All in all: GREAT VIDEO! In my eyes, you are really up there with the great ones on this plattform! Kudos to your editor, too btw! I really like your content, please stay healthy and stay safe ;)

Great stuff! Your writing in this and your other videos is consistently enjoyable and sensible in a way that makes this 40 minute video a very easy watch. Kor's editing is a great addition to that as well. Thumbs up to you both! I actually didn't know people thought Rikka never grew, and I found myself wondering why the whole video. But I think it's as simple as the fact that accepting yourself is hard. Rikka is the heaviest representation of a phase of life many have gone through, especially those who would be watching this show, but a lot of the viewers also probably threw away all the traits of their old chunni habits because they're seen as embarrassing or worthy of ridicule. In a sense, they have thrown away their sense of wonder and replaced it with cynicism. Rikka's story is to accept that you will change, but it shouldn't be at anyone else's behest. It should only be when you want to do so. I'm still a young adult myself and I feel like fully accepting who I am and have been in the past is a path I'm still walking. But I know I don't want to lose the wonder that makes me see something special in shows like this, and the warmth and mirth I feel seeing it broken down and praised as you have done here. Thanks again for representing Rikka Takanashi in her case against anime critics.

Love this video Tbh I don't get why people want rikka to be normal by the end, since the whole ending of s1 is saying forcing her to be normal is not good.... and kinda boring to watch without all the drama in s1. It wouldn't be a satisfying ending if we saw her successfully do what she did in s1 when she went back to be sad, depressed and lonely. I think when yuta says the reason for loving rikka is her chunibyo it also goes for the audience, rikka is adorable because of how she is

Thank you. Ever since I watched this anime for the first time something about it clicked with me, to the point of being literally my favorite anime for a year, and then my second favorite for a few years, and still is. I could never point something about it that explains why I love it so much, and so I found this video and said "I have to watch this" and never watched it until now, and it literally described everything (or almost everything) that I felt but could never point watching the anime, and it just clicked again, I had the same thoughts but like, unconsciously? if that makes any sense?, that's why I've never understood the comments about "Rikka never changing", because it was obvious for me for some reason and this video explains it perfectly. Though I still don't understand the hate towards the second season, I just liked it as much as the first and I find it underrated, I guess I'll have to make an analysis myself about it and the character of Shichimiya, because I feel like just a few people have and I love that character and her whole idea in the show, having my second favorite scene on the entire series. PS - Sorry if my english is bad I'm still learning.

Would that we could all be so fortunate as to have someone to be dorks along with for the rest of our mutual lives. That was my personal takeaway from the story, anyway. It's not like having a bit of chuunibyou is even innately a bad thing. In one other story, I vaguely recall someone pointing out how, considering one specific character *being* a chuuni despite also being an accomplished author, said trait was ultimately to her benefit especially to that end. That character's head wasn't stuck in the clouds, and she had her capacity for getting and being serious at appropriate intervals, but enjoying her life and her work was important to her. Might that then make her a "mentally ill" individual, to the people who label Rikka much in the same? Even if the very same over-active, self-aggrandizing imagination is to her benefit and financial success? Really, I seem to recall it being more like a persona she'd adopt, and was just one she liked having on as much as possible for obvious reasons. But she was still aware of her surroundings, and as such could and would focus up as needed. Compare and contrast with Yuuta getting irked at Rikka earlier on for not seeming to take situations seriously, and/or seeming to lack awareness. She never *needed* to stop being chuunibyou altogether, she just needed to A) learn to balance it a bit and/or become a bit more self-assured, or gods forbid *like* herself more, and B) have people (or even just someone in especial particular) who understand her as she is. Besides, it's *way* cuter to see Yuuta and Rikka meet each other in the middle with their individual chuuni streaks. It was the basis of their relationship, and if anything it's better that they have that unique way of expressing themselves to and with the other. It makes me feel more like the relationship will last and be a good one, than if both of them were some kind of cookie-cutter "normal" couple. They have a *dynamic* with one another, gods forbid. Thank you again for a wonderful video essay. It's fun to enjoy a piece of media, but it can be just as much fun if not moreso to do a deeper dive into it sometimes.

Thank you for this awesome analysis, it really helped me to clarify my thoughts on this series. I think the first season was the greatest with how it handled the topic of loss and cope, and it has some of the deepest and most amazing scenes in the series, but the other parts aren't terrible too. When I finished the movie, I enjoyed it, but couldn't shake off this conflicted feeling within me that the ending wasn't what I expected and I started having doubts that it was a good ending, but deep down I knew that it hinted that Rikka has grown and changed, just that we are only seeing the beginning of a new phase for her. I kept having this feeling that Rikka was being childish throughout the movie, but again I also know that she is slowly maturing, just maybe not as obvious as what it seems on the surface. I think what took me most by surprise is that the movie was giving an impression that Rikka will make a big change to dial down her chuunibyou, with what Touka said and Rikka's only reason to not change her chuunibyou ways being her fear that Yuuta will stop loving her. So when Yuuta reassured her that he will love her no matter what, my brain automatically came to the conclusion that Rikka stops having any reason to continue her chuunibyou, and it should diminish a lot, which didn't happen. At the same time, when Yuuta texts Touka that he loves Rikka for being a chuunibyou, it feels like everything just went back to the status quo with him just enabling Rikka to not move on. What made me a bit frustrated in the moment was that a similar theme was brought up in season 2 when Rikka felt her chuunibyou dying out as she got closer to Yuuta, so it just felt like a rehashed theme with not that much changing. But then when I thought about it, I also knew that Rikka is changing, she has just removed an inhibition that will allow her now to deepen her relationship with Yuuta, things will change, just as Yuuta said. Yuuta can seem like he is just enabling Rikka's behavior, but it also makes sense that after what forcefully removing Chuunibyou from Rikka in season 1 led to, he has learnt that he needs to work things out with Rikka at a pace she is comfortable with and support her along the way. His text shows to Touka that he is going to be with Rikka no matter what, and to show his dedication to being by Rikka's side and support her, and not that he specifically wants Rikka to always be chuunibyou (I think the sub I watched didn't translate it super well, so maybe that is a reason I got a different interpretation at first). When you brought up that Rikka also uses chuunibyou as a way for her to express herself, it made things a lot clearer why she isn't going to just get rid of it. She will let it evolve as her love for Yuuta progresses, but it will remain as her way as experiencing the world with awe and to express her thoughts. This video has helped me reconcile my initial issue with the movie, and now I need to watch it again with this new deeper understanding of the series to really do it justice. This series doesn't just spoonfeed the audience, and as such a lot of things and ideas can tend to fly over people's head, but upon closer inspection that is a lot more to what is shown in the series. Having said that, even though she wasn't trying to be a jerk and she was just confused, it was still a jerk of Rikka to leave Yuuta in the train uninformed with the ring. I mean at the end of the day their love is strong enough that they will just meet soon enough again as shown, but she really did Yuuta dirty with that move.
@KirbySonicTeam
@KirbySonicTeam Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the detailed and well thought out comment! It was super fun to read. I definitely think season 2 did a lot of damage to the perception of Rikkas character. And it makes the movie doing a similar theme but done better come across worse because we did this theme in season 2. The difference for me was I took the film as a redo of what was a ruined lesson, where maybe for most since it is retreading a similar theme they then weren’t able to appreciate how much better it was. Also yeah like I mention, Rikka definitely shouldn’t have done that to Yuuta. I just think since I know her intentions were good and Yuuta quickly finds out, that I can pretty easily forgive her.
@luyangche8278
@luyangche8278 Жыл бұрын
@@KirbySonicTeam Just re-watched the movie, then your video again, and I gotta say with my perspective on the situation deepened through your amazing video, I got to enjoy it a lot more, and saw a lot of what you brought up. This also got me realising that the main focus in terms of Rikka's character arc during season 2 + Take on me movie isn't so much chuunibyou in itself, but chuunibyou as a form of sincere self-expression as you mentioned. And now it makes perfect sense how her chuunibyou develops and play out. At first, chuunibyou was her tool in expressing her love for Yuuta, but as time goes on, it starts becoming a hindrance in her forming a deeper bond as it got in way of her sincerely showing her true feelings. It also goes to show that her chuunibyou will then evolve in a way that still allow her the avenue to show her awe and wonder at the world in a way sincere to her feelings, while not getting in the way of clouding her sincere love for Yuuta. At this point I'm just rephrasing the concepts you talk about, but that just goes to show how much I resonate with your analysis. I agree that season 2 kind of got in the way of truly seeing the movie for what it is, and potentially leaving a sour taste in many viewer's mind that clouded their ability to appreciate the movie. Having said that, I still found it mostly enjoyable, if just to see more of the cute interactions between the main couple and how their relationship slowly develops. If anything it did act as a contrast point for the movie and a slow build-up between season 1 and Take on me. It showed the slow burn side of the relationship between the explosive second-half of season 1 and the more dynamic development done in the movie. I never really bought into the idea that a kiss is necessary to show the development of a relationship, so I might be in the minority here. For me, the part where Rikka secretly spent many late nights finding the last arcade coin to become eternal contractors with Yuuta really showed how committed she was to being with Yuuta, and that was a big advance to their relationship, but I digress. I can see why others see season 2 as a bit of a black sheep in the series, and it definitely also got in my way of interpreting the movie initially. Once again, great job on the deep dive and Kor for the excellent editing too. I really enjoyed how you presented your ideas.

@@KirbySonicTeam welp, finish it 2nd time, thanks again, your analysis really give me a better insight of the show. I know many people hate season 2 for the lack of conflict when there is one, not as big as in season 1 but still important to overall characters and their relationship development. This show is still in my top 3. Also just personal thing, I love the pinky, the nose touch, the hand holding, and the hug more than the kiss in the movie. I don’t understand why the kiss have to be the ultimate sign of their love. These 2 have the best hug moment in my opinion.

Would it be alright for me to have a feeling she's slightly austism coded? Chunibyo helps her express herself, for maybe any good amount folkes with ASD (myself included) we express ourselves through our interest so..what would you say on the matter?
@KirbySonicTeam
@KirbySonicTeam Жыл бұрын
You can interpret her however you want! I know very little about autism to make that guess. But if you see something in her that could relate to that in the text or just something about Rikka clicks that way for you, then go right ahead. I imagine some of the stuff I read into her is pretty different from what the creators intended. But that’s why media is fun.

I only just found out that ‘take on me’ even existed, and though at first I agreed that some more maturity would have been nice (with season 2 in the back of my mind), the movie at least ended on a better note in terms of where we could expect yuuta and rikka to go as a couple. In terms of closure, it did so much better than season 2, and it was just a good, fun ride in general. Great video, so glad I came across it and it deserves a lot more views honestly.

@IanWaffles a couple of things 1- that you are very passionate that you made almost a 50-minute-long video about 2- I believe in what you are saying 3- your explanation is on point and easy to understand 4-showing that what people think of a character is only sub-level and they should always go deep down 5- you said something that I didn't even realize and it my favorite anime that I make it a point to re-watch twice a year 6- you gave a good/heartfelt send-off at the ending 7- you made the video timeless and rewatchable 8- you didn't dog on satone shichimiya like most do 9- shows how growing up and changing can be hard and a bit unnerving 10-you went through every plot point in the series/movie with the care it deserves and that is why I love this video And that's just barely cracking the surface I still got plenty more to say but I fear it may be to long for someone to read so I am ending it here you guys have a happy rest of your day

What the fuck. This is incredible. How do you have so few views and subs??? Oh my god, wait a minute. This whole, “Chuunibyo as self-expression” thing just gave me an epiphany. Kanye West is the ultimate chuuni. Because he doesn’t limit himself to the way people should naturally think and accepts the wild and sometimes crazy egotistical thoughts he has he’s been able to continuously rise higher and higher throughout his career. Or something like that. I feel like that makes a lot of sense.

@@KirbySonicTeam I'm not an expert on any of this type of stuff so take what I say with a grain of salt. While this is kind of a general thing, I think more than anything, the video is scripted very well and paced very well. The use of actual clips I think was a good amount so that while you used it to further some of your points, you didn't overuse clips and rely on them. Again, I think the video was paced very well, not spending too much time on things that don't matter and giving enough attention to things that do matter. Other than that I can only really say things like the actual analysis was done really well. You broke down different facets of the character very well and addressed each "argument/counter-point" really well. You made everything very easy to understand while still going in depth and not just scratching at the surface. I don't think this'll be of much use because of how vague I was with everything but I hope i answered your question.

So what do you have to say about Season 2 given some of your derision in this video? Have you in any way warmed up to it?
@KirbySonicTeam
@KirbySonicTeam Жыл бұрын
I haven’t watched Season 2 since this video but my general criticism was how it regresses the intimacy of the characters in favor of more Rikka chunibyo shenanigans as a point of drama for their romance. I’m still not even sure what the dark flame dragon is or what Rikkas intentions or understanding of it were meant to translate to for their relationship. Combined with lame episodes like the groomer storyline or the sleeping contest, how dekormori has seemingly become more delusional when in season 1 it was much clearer she knew it was all just for fun, and finally how the show dangles progression in the form of the kiss only to have a contrived fake out makes everything feel mean spirited. I like any time Yuuta and Rikka are just being cute together like their dates, but everything that gets in the way of that is frustrating, I feel, for all the wrong reasons.
@skeetermania3202
@skeetermania3202 Жыл бұрын
@@KirbySonicTeam If I could just speak up for Ren for a while (at least from memory)… Based on evidence in the season, I’ve interpreted Rikka wanting to unlock Yuuta’s “Dark Flame Dragon” as wanting to “take their relationship to the next level” if you know what I mean. At some points in the season, it’s joked about how the two may be thinking about sex, even having the other characters eavesdrop out of context and thinking something sexual is going on. As shown in the Christmas OVA, Rikka is also clearly aware of what are considered normal conventions for couples to go through. However, she considers her pact with Yuuta a special one, one embraced in their own chuuni pasts. And we also know that she’s too shy to express these feelings “normally,” something she works towards in the 6th episode of the season. I’ll add more if I can.

Not sure if you’ve finished the video but I address this early on where I point out that the show is a slapstick comedy more often than not. Characters like Nibutani and Toka physically attack Rikka or Yuta and it’s clearly meant to be a joke, with very rare exceptions where tonally it doesn’t fit. And Yuta hitting Rikka is treated the same. It’s just meant to be absurd. Hope that helps unless you had a different point you were making and I misunderstood.

He definitely manipulated her in the end of season 1 when he told her to take off her eyepatch, but that was part of his lesson to learn that he’s not helping Rikka by forcing her to change. And the movie emphasizes that growth as he never pushes her to anything there. Instead choosing to follow her and be by her side no matter what.

I think the show is definitely on your side. Yuta screwed up, but all of his actions are based in trying to help Rikka. And while good intentions don’t negate negative outcomes, there’s a gulf of difference between the good intentions of an adult, and the good intentions of a teenager in his first relationship with a girl he has a very poor grip on dealing with in a mature way. In the end he comes around though, and it’s easy to root for him when he becomes the man Rikka believed he could be.
