Thanks for another great video. Two questions. 1. When Barry says run the scales for a song, sometimes you end on the third of another chord. What is the rule for when this happens? And with the added note scales, people say the purpose is to come out right. Does this mean that you land on the 1 3 5 or 7 of the 5 chord? Thanks!

1) Like running the scale down to the third of the dominant you mean? Or something else? 2) YES - as I understand it. I never heard Barry talk too much about chord tones in the scales but that does seem to be a property they have.

@@Alucia1588 exactly the same as normal. So for Em7b5 A7 Dm you apply added note rules as for C7 and then pop the C# in when appropriate (or even… don’t.)

The dominant dim 7 scale graphic didn't show a flat 6, it showed an A natural. Or did I miss something ?

you need to include diagrams. most watching this (myself included) probably arent music majors. I know i learn mostly through patterns and shapes, so when you start listing off notes in a scale i have to think about how that translates to my fretboard, and then i need to rewind and try not to miss the point youre actually making. Easy fix: power point slide and a monitor behind you. You could literally have 2 slides in said .ppt, each with a single, large image of the fret board and the notes highlighted.

Yeah maybe… I do do this type of thing for some videos esp introductory ones… btw all this stuff takes time - even ‘easy fixes’. FWIW this wasn’t meant to be a video to teach the scales etc, more to demonstrate a misconception about the system.

Lastly, I do want to say that from my teaching experience, Barry’s approach requires a greater level of fretboard knowledge than most jazz learners have, at least at the outset, even if they are experienced and capable players in other genres. I think this may be because it’s a piano system ultimately, that we are trying to adapt to guitar. That’s always a challenge. On the other hand there are guitaristic approaches that are more natural to our instrument. You can use for example a more ‘shapes’ based approach like Charlie Christian or Herb Ellis.
