A BIG Upgrade For My Laguna 18-36 Wood Lathe | Wood Turning

I have had the Laguna 18/36 for a little over three months now & I figured it was finally time to add the extension so I could get back to turning larger bowls. First on the extension is this 22" elm bowl that was turned during the afternoon the other day. This one was quite the challenge though for the first turning which was kind of to be expected since I have never used this extension but the main takeaway for me was no more coring on it. It started off nicely & I thought it might could be done but the vibration from the size of the bowl got the best of it & ended up snapping the tenon on the bowl & knocking the extension out of level. After it was all said & done, I am very happy to have the new addition to the lathe & I love how this bowl turned out. Turning larger pieces like this are one of my favorite things to turn so I look forward to pushing this lathe & seeing what I can do with it. That is an impressive bowl, the elm looks really nice when its finished. I might need to try and find some elm to work with. I like the addition for the lathe, its always nice to have the options to add on and increase your work range.

I highly recommend turning some if you get the chance. I have always enjoyed the few opportunities I have had working with it. It turns nicely & dries pretty easily. I am excited about it as well, real curious to see how much it can handle.

I pulled my headstock to the end of the lathe Used a chair as a tool rest. It was complete madness however it worked.

Very nice work. Beautiful bowl. 👍 Great job persevering thru as well. I’m learning as I go, so lots of experimenting too. I’ve got the 15/24 with extension, so similar setup. Trying to decide which coring system to go with. Good to know about using it on the extension. Thx for sharing that.

Thank you! That’s honestly how I learned most of my turning knowledge; trial and error. I decided with the oneway because of the knife attaching to the actual system but there are definitely other great systems available now.

Excellent bowl. I would think that the extension would handle the coring just fine. You might give Laguna a call and ask them about it. Your bowls are coming fantastic.

I may ask about it but the issue I was running into which was translating over camera was while coring, there was so much down force on the knife that the extension had actually come a little loose which ended up causing the catch when the knife got out of line. I have since been putting a 2x4 support on the end to help with that but a little hesitant to try and core again and risk messing up another knife. The oneway knives arent the cheapest lol

I recommend looking into it! The extension is nice & sturdy. My only change that I will be making is getting bolts that go through the legs so I can tighten it down better. Thank you!

I hesitate to say this because I’m sure you already know, but a wider tenon would probably help a lot with coring something that big. Obviously it’s putting a lot of torque on there, I’m not sure if that brand of chuck has wider jaws but that would add a ton of strength to the connection. I really enjoy the videos!

Oh I completely agree. I do have a wider set for these jaws but in the past, they don't really hold all that well with the size of the chuck. I would love to get a oneway chuck or something like that eventually, something that is a lot more heavy duty because I tend to turn pretty aggressively lol. With this, the video didn't pick up too well but most of issue was in the extension because of the force pushing down on it from trying to core it. The bolts that hold the extension don't actually go through the legs but hang on like a keyhole and just tighten down so in the grand scheme of things there was not as much stability there as it probably would be with bolts running through. I do plan to change that and get bolts to go through and may try again. sorry for the book! lol hopefully that helps but never hesitate to say anything! I always appreciate the feedback & discussion

@@andrewmccarn I appreciate it as well! It’s helpful for me to hear how other tools and techniques work so that my knowledge isn’t limited to the few tools that I have and how I use them. That is interesting that it hangs on the bolts instead of being held snug, I wonder why laguna went with that approach.

@@jonr6540 My assumption would be for ease of changing between a bed extension or bowl extension, that way it could just popped off and tightened down. When I first put it on, I thought it would be level siting but it ended up being about 1/4" short of center. Thats why I think the coring had some issues since there was a gap on top and bottom of the key hole and not sitting firmly against the extension (Hopefully this makes sense lol) Either way It is still a good extension and hopefully the small changes I make will add that stability I am looking for as far as thats concerned. but compared to my last outboard extension, this thing is a dream lol

Thank you Howard. I definitely will when it comes to on board turning. I will have to try and think of a solution for doing it on the extension because I would love to be able to that, especially for bowls this size. Feels like a lot of waste when I just have to hollow it out.

It’s a great system, just kind of an investment if you want all the knives but I like that it’s one solid system. This is the only knife I own for the system but it’s definitely saved on the waste and time when hollowing

Nice bowl! Sorry you couldn't core it and gotten another bowl from that beautiful elm chunk. I have the Laguna 1524 lathe and am thinking about getting the outboard turning kit for it. Does the 1.5hp 110V motor have enough power for 20" bowls?

That is a massive bowl. Looks fantastic !!. I am thinking if you figured out a way to attach another set of legs to the extension it would fix your coring problem. Probably going to require drilling and taping some holes in the extension to mount another set of legs to the extension. If you know any machinists good person to ask?

Thank you John! This was initially one of the ideas that I had. Since the extension does have attachment holes, there would be some drilling to do. On my last lathe, I just drilled four clean holes through the legs and used some bolts & washers. I still have the legs to my old jet so I may have to see how well it all lines up & experiment lol I also thought MAYBE seeing if I could purchase another riser block & put the headstock on one & the tailstock on the other and in essence just increase the onboard capacity. Not sure how stable the headstock would be being raised up but would be curious.
