We love it when you talk about balls Jason - shiny balls, hairy balls, corroded balls, fine balls and shorted balls. Add a bit of ball squeezage, and we have some quality content, balls to the wall style. Nice repair and a bit of dead bug IC reinstatement thrown in for good measure. A very Merry Christmas for you and your family too Jason 🎄

I wouldn't dare simply jump vdd_main to vdd_boost, for the safety of the data. Although come to think of it, it's far less intrusive to the board and there is a lot less risk than soldering ics to a damaged board (you never know what secret damage is there waiting for you to heat up the board). Nice scientific experiment! Love it! Hope you are doing really really well Jason, have a good one!

VDD boost will only be needed when VDD main falls below the nominal value that is required for VDD boost. I.e part of the phone needs greater than 4v all the time. As the batter drops I would expect VDD main to drop as well.

I am guessing that chip only boosts when battery level gets low. Based on a project I working on that has a 3.5v rail that only boosts for a short time when the battery(lithum) is nearly dead and runs a as a basic ldo the rest of the time.

The charred material is conductive. It's been carbonised due to the initial short, and you should dig that stuff out and verify shorts are gone before repowering the board

The chips can be moved over for full functionality but it would take someone very confident to do so. I've been doing it for data access but wouldn't want to guarantee that everything would work 100%.
