It's time for another book review.
This time it's Amor Towles A Gentleman in Moscow.
This book is a wonderful read with many different themes that got me thinking about my own situation in lockdown in Melbourne. Count Rostov is under house arrest in the beautiful Metropole Hotel in Moscow for 32 years and it tells the wonder of the people and the stories within it. If you like a slow read and appreciate excellent writing, lovely evocative language that inspires a time past dedicated to literature, music, art, poetry, history then this is for you.
Have you read this book? What did you think of it?

Great review. One thing, though, as I understand it. He wasn't sentenced for the poem, he was sentenced for being an aristocrat. The Bolsheviks like the poem and that is what saves him from being killed.

Yes you are correct. He was sentenced for being an aristocrat but ‘his’ poem saved him from the bullet

I read it twice in lockdown. I never felt that all these restrictions were necessary (probably others are now feeling the same). I was also going through a marriage break up, so this book was something of a lifeline. I think it was brilliant from beginning to finish. Peter

Good review. I am halfway through this book and find it not particularly exciting to read, but very soothing and yet stimulating to read such artful writing. So many novels are filled with killing and carnage, it's nice to find a book like A Gentleman In Moscow, which is a happy book, and most-importantly an exceptionally well-written book. Good writing is the key, and good writing is an art which takes time and much study to master. It's not the story, it's how you tell it. A good writer can take a mundane event and make it into a riveting read. There is a movie out now of this book.

What a wonderful explanation of the book. I’m with you, can’t stand the killing, carnage themes on many books. I can’t figure how that may be escapism especially when we see it every night on the news. I agree it’s well written and that makes a huge difference. Happy reading! (I did not know that there’s a movie out on it. Must check into it. Thank you!)

I watched the shorts of the movie a few days ago, on You Tube. It's a Paramount production.

SPOILER SPOILER I just finished the book and i loved it a lot! Although i have one question, i think a pretty silly/dumb one i might add lol, but why did Sofia have to defect in the manner she did? She wasn't under house arrest so couldnt she have left the country at any time? or were there certain policies in place at that time that prevented her from doing so? Or because the Count wanted to escape, he knew his escape would put her in danger? That seems like the simple answer but just wanted to clarify, perhaps i missing the big picture haha Loved your review btw!

Ah, we shall never know the reasoning from the author’s point of view. Maybe it was like you said, that it would put the count in danger? That is, the actions of one may be an indication of future actions by those close to them? Thank you for sharing your thoughts and feedback. Greatly appreciate it. Happy reading!
