I’ve been using a limited palette for many years. People are always amazed at the wide range of colors I get from just 3 colors: Quinacridone rose, Phthlo Blue, and Hansa Yellow. And I’m amazed that other people’s palettes have a bunch of colors and then I realize that they probably don’t know how to mix colors. I’ve been mixing colors for so long now that it comes naturally to me.

I hope you understand the meaning of my request. Thank you so much to teach your knowledge, I follow each tutos and can’t wait for the next one. Félicitations Louise !

Thank you for giving us your endorsement on a book that you have found helpful and fresh in your watercolor journey. I too have a bookshelf full of books related to the art of painting but not all of these books were as helpful as I had hoped. I’ll be on Amazon today 😊. May I also say that the most helpful and inspiring lessons in watercolor painting has come from my favorite artist Louise De Masi.

I appreciate your sharing this information. Hazel Soan is an incredible watercolor artist. Following her advice clearly has granted you a step-up approach, and you sincerely share it well. I love your work very much. So many artists are speaking of limited palettes. Zorn is one of the more classic studies on the subject, although his work tended to be quite dark in contrast. Keep it up, we are watching you. 😊😊😊

Hi Louise. Jim from Madrid, Spain (a fellow artist and a New Yorker expat living abroad). I saw this book's review in the past and I love Hazel's artwork, but I didn't buy it yet. After watching your video I'll probably put it on my list for "Father's Day"!! 😁👍 I'm a 6 month old subscriber to your channel. I really like the way you explain things in a practical "hands-on" manner and I've learned a few things with you, so thank you for sharing your knowledge. I'm a self-taught artist at age 56 (my life has been focused on the Biz world) and art has helped me through very difficult health issues in these past years (thanks to my wife and best friend that motivated me to start). I use to draw when I was a young boy but I never had the chance to pursue Art more seriously until a year and a half ago. Thanks to KZbin nowadays, I've learned so much and I'm actually painting in watercolor and gouache successfully (hopefully this year I'll be able to expose my artwork in my first Art gallery here in Madrid). FYI, I'm a wildlife and nature artist, though I also love plein air and urban sketching. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise... and I wish the best for you. I will continue to be a subscriber because I also love your videos. Cheers from Sunny Spain! 😁👍😎✌

This is best...and I completely agree, I have started using limited color palette and it does wonders. Also when two mixed colors separate themselves on the paper, it gives another dimension to the painting...and I love that...watercolors are the medium which let you do that... I have been recommending that book since I purchased it a year or so ago. Thanks for the info. You always are so helpful. There is a whole interview with Soan discussing the book on YT. I may have mentioned this in comments before. The world's best watercolorists use a more limited palette and they understand the properties of their colors very well. We have all bought pre-mixed colors that were popular, only to be disappointed. it is easier to shop and have the thrill of a new purchase (hence all of the "haul" videos that attract viewers) than it is to work with the colors one already owns.

Brilliant as always and perfect timing! I can recommend yet another source book to my beginners students. I often feel sorry for them as I gently harp… ok repeat like a stuck record about colour temperature and mixing your own colours just for fun to understand what they will do on the paper. I love limited palette. I am still fond of using more than three or four, but I laugh at the unused hard as bricks old squares of convenience colours on my palette I squeezed out eons ago when I first bought it and debated for days which ones to fill those holes! Now I have many holes…don’t need them all. French ultramarine blue and Burnt sienna, both Winsor Newton, are kings in my grey bowl and are in all of my paintings. I would be lost without them and they give me all the greys and browns I need. Touch in permanent Rose or Hansa yellow medium and off to the races! I have a couple of Hazel’s books, but may have to add this one in too! Amazon is going to get a run on them because of how many of us love and respect your teaching and opinion. ALL my classes hear about your KZbin and patreon. Thank you wonderful, lovely lady for all you do. We love Leo and Dom too.

Another advantage of using a limited palette is that it is easier to create a sustainable natural color palette as there are fewer colors to research and locate, forr those of us who want to avoid synthetics when possible (I live in the woods). To create a limited natural non-toxic palette, you could choose among the following, which are largely Earth pigments, with a couple botanically sourced options (there are many more): yellow ochre, red ochre, a more orange/brown ochre, a green earth, vivianite blue, or Maya blue, which is an indigo-based pigment. If natural blues are not easily available, consider a fairly non-toxic blue such as Ultramarine (e.g., blue green shade), a synthetic substitute for the expensive and rare lapis lazuli. For a deeper red, you could choose genuine madder, which is derived from a plant root. For a black, you could use vine or plant-based lamp black, or black walnut ink. For more on sustainable art, I suggest checking out Jyotsna's Lostincolour website and Elma Hogeboom's KZbin channel.

Really enjoyed the video! I think it's a super important and helpful topic. I'm really grateful that when I started painting years ago, that I was following this artist on the public TV who used a very limited pallet of traditional colours. To this day I find myself overwhelmed by all the beautiful watercolor pallets but that have so many colors it's almost paralyzing lol. I like to pick the ones I'm going to use in a painting, and see how they blend together in different ways, before I start painting. Paying attention to the warmth or coolness of shades is a concept by only recently came to, and that I love to help prevent muddy color mixes. Great video!

By limited palette you mean choose only three or four shades from a selection for each painting . Some people might think by using a limited palette you only need to buy Cadmium red , cadmium yellow, and ultramarine blue for every painting. So am I correct that what you’re saying is limit your palette to three or four colours for each painting out of a bigger selection of colours you have
@LouiseDeMasi
@LouiseDeMasi Ай бұрын
That's correct. You choose a limited amount of colours for your painting- they can be any colour combination but you try to mix everything you need from the colours you've chosen.
