My written French is not so good, so I will say in English that this was marvelous and I enjoyed it very much. Thank you for filming this, age of sail ships and especially how they were actually sailed and handled is a fascination of mine since childhood. I hope to sail on her one day and climb the ratlines in rough Atlantic weather. Must feel like flying sitting on her spars, the spray and wind in you face, rocking up and down by 20 m. Merci beaucoup, quel vaisseau magnifique!

Still many things were forgotten. Building this ship was historical research and thanks to it we now have a much better idea of how these ships were built. I certainly hope it will lead to many more tall ships being built again.

Cette belle frégate de 12 et son équipage mérite un bel accueille aux USA ! En plus ce sera le début de la campagne présidentielle donc point de surprise à Boston que de voir quelques candidats aux primaires démocrates et/ou républicaines rappliquer pour coller à l'image du jeune Congrès américain qui rendit visite à l'Hermione en mai 1781. Hillary à l'abordage de la com !

effacer le passé, l'annihiler, c'est la pensée dirigiste de ne surtout pas utiliser le drapeau de la marine royale à tout prix même si c'est une entorse historique aux débuts de l'Hermione.

Ce n'est pas pour effacer le passé, c'est juste que le pavillon national de l'état Français est le tricolore. Et comme ce navire est sous pavillon Français les lois maritimes international lui impose de poster le pavillon national, soit le Tricolore. Une fois dit ça, l'Hermione à un pavillon blanc, mais elle ne peut naviguer avec. Il était aussi discuter d'utiliser une flame de guerre, et là, elle n'aurait pu qu'être blanche cat l'Hermione n'est pas un bâtiment de guerre et dont elle ne peut arborer une flame Tricolore. Lors de son voyage au USA, elle a hissé une bannière étoilée correspondante à celle de la guerre d'Indépendance Américain. Pavillon non officiel aux USA aujourd'hui mais tout à fait toléré pour les besoin de l'expédition mais toujours accompagné du pavillon national Tricolore, le seul reconnue. A saint Malo en 2016, il y avait le pavillon bleu à fleurs de lys sur le beauprés, et lui, il n'est pas Républicain mais plutôt du Royaume de France. Petite anecdote, le grand pavillon Tricolore de l'Hermione vient directement du porte-avion Français le Charles de Gaulle qui le lui à offert. L'Hermione, celle de 1779, à commencée sa carrière sous pavillon blanc, puis elle à porté un pavillon blanc avec un Tricolore en 1/4 en coin. A un an près, pour cause de naufrage, elle aurait porté un Tricolore entier. Et bien maintenant c'est fait.

Das ist die historische Bemalung. Ich finde es schaut toll aus. Nicht jedes Schiff hatte den "Wespenstrich". Besonders Französische Schiffe waren teils bunt verziert. Die meisten oker und schwarz aber die Franzosen und Spanier hatten keine einheitliche Konvention, wie die Engländer. Jedes Schiff war anders, manche oker und schwaz manche bunt.

30 million dollars, for a ship that should last a little more than 40 years.

She could last a hundred years and still be sailing in that time if she is taken care of properly. I was just doing some rigging work for a 40 ton Norwegian wooden Ketch that was built in the 1920's and has sailed around the world multiple times, at one point one of the owners continued a nonstop voyage/livaboard situation for 15 years, and a large portion of this ketches construction was softwood, douglas fir, yellow cedar, etc.. Hermiones structural members are mostly of seasoned Oak, if she is given the maintenance she needs she will still be sailing easily in 60-80 years. Look at the careers of the USS Constitution and HMS Victory, these were two warships that had extraordinarily long lives. She is an absolute dream to sail, and I doubt we will ever see another fine French frigate like this, replicated to the highest degree of quality and authenticity in my lifetime. She has come around at the right time for my sailing career, I am profoundly grateful.

HMS Trincomelee is still afloat after over 200 years. As is Constitution. Victory did suffer quite a bit but she was shot to pieces twice and sank twice. 240+ years. Hermione is well built and cared for, she will last centuries.
