Tyler, you are filling a huge gap in the study of Frank Zappa. This is MUCH needed work you're doing(and very entertaining presentation, I might add). Thank you so much.
@mss112352 жыл бұрын
Brett Clement's study (which I purchased via a reputable academic source) is VERY GOOD in attempting to structure Zappa's progression of self-teaching/evolving compositional technique. His study does not just have very Zappa related topics that really have applications explaining both his improvisational technique (guitar soloing), his written composing, and everything inbetween.

That story about the left-hand/right-hand, white key/black key technique is TRULY inspirational. Not only does it obviously inspire utilizing an instrument's idiosyncratic quirks (a guitar's tuning, white vs. black key, etc.) to help compose more complex SOUNDING melodies but the same idea can be applied to the multitude of effects pedals or other live-applicable tools now available to aide in playing other complex melodies live (Whammy pedal, slicer sequencer, interesting delay settings, anything really using MIDI controlled patching etc.). Zappa was so clever

I think it's fair to say that Zappa really transformed the concepts of modern composers like Webern/Schönberg/Berg and Stockhausen to a whole new level. And he had fun doing that, contrary to his role models who mainly tried to escape the music of Richard Wagner using 12-tone and serial music. Amazing analysis! Thank you so much.

Tyler, I couldn't stop watching your video, taking screenshots all the time for a closer look.This is an amazing piece of work! I love these short instrumental interludes of Zappa for decades and you have broadened my mind understanding them immensely. You and the Dr. are super excellent teachers! Also, you are so fluent picking known to super super rare examples of music for explanation. It took me decades to be pretty safe in the Zappa world, but you seem to be familiar in it on another level! Also, your citations of band members were extremely well picked! Not to speak of your excellent graphic skills. You leave me here with open mouth. And then, at the end, comes the joke with the supposedly VHS-recorder. Wow, wow, wow! Congratulations, you just won an Oscar! Frank would have loved talking to you, finding someone, who could understand much of his work (well, and then immediately would make you do crazy stuff).

I vaguely remember some interview with Zappa where he talked about using serial techniques but bailing partway through if he didn't like how it sounds. He never got overattached to a tool, he just wanted to make music he liked.

@@TylerBartram Yeah, I think the all sequencial isomelism 12-pitches with several transposition comes from Slonimsky's thesaurus (i am suprised there is no mention of that in the video). This is the bedrock of Zappa's music, "sticking to 12 notes in 11 intervals". Slonimsky called Zappa a constructionist, meaning even if the music sounds destructive, it is not. It does some alterations there and ther but without breaking the struture or tone and if he did it, it was well thought and planned. I am not a musician so I may be totally wrong but i read some text about Slonimsky's matrix and concluded that's what it is. That construction wih the transposing bass followed by a same pattern of note sounds like 100% Slonimsky. Indeed, my first experience with isomelism was when I learned to play "Oh No". Very nice video!!

What Brett Clement says at 20:28 is to my mind 100% accurate. I had listened to Echidna's Arf many times and had just assumed that the passage at the end was just a flurry of random notes vaguely trending upward, but it wasn't until I actually transcribed the section that I realized that he was not only repeating a pattern (planing), but also invoking polymeter at the same time (a pattern of 9 sixteenth notes cycling over 5/16) across 10 measures. A pattern of 9 notes, played 5 times, equals 45 notes. Ten measures of 5/16 should be 50 notes. So Frank adds three extra notes at the beginning of the first measure (thereby disguising the pattern by introducing it on an off beat) and two extra notes at the end to round off the 50. Deliberately thrown off of perfect symmetry. It blew my mind when I realized that there had indeed been a structure to it all along, but what also surprised me is how even some of the mighty Zappa alumni (Ruth, Keneally) seemed to indicate that they had never really figured out what made that passage tick.

[Commenting while still in the first 10 min of the video] THESE are one of the things I love the most about FZ's music. Like is there even anyone else that does this? (The A and B sections of _Powerhouse_ are generally thought to have been composed separately and joined together just-because, but that isn't even really the same thing, I think... they're *about* the right length to be insertion units, but neither one of them feels like "the song" and the other "the add-on".)
