My dad was in the army in the 80s and was stationed in Germany. One day, he and his staff were in Eindhoven, either touring the city or doing maneuvers. His sergeant was a Vietnam veteran who had served in the 101st Airborne. They're at a street corner, and these two old ladies see the sergeant's "screaming eagle" patch. They immediately embrace him and start crying.

My great uncle fought at Arnhem with the British airborne forces. He never spoke about his experiences. Very subdued but he started a family tradition. Since then a member of the family has served with the UK airborne forces. All started by him 80 odd years ago

There are only three composers of film music who managed to catch the spirit of WW II from my point of view. First among them is surely John Addison, who proved it right above. Second is Elmar Bernstein with his Great-escape-theme. Third comes John Williams with his musical illustration to Saving Private Ryan.
