In the ‘90s I ran the bulls a good few times in Pamplona and San Sebastian de los Reyes. Once, I arrived very late (half drunk at 08.00am) and had to crawl in from the spectator side under the timber planking barrier. A Guardia Civil policeman tried to stop me, first shouting then lashing me several times on the back with his truncheon/baton. I got through regardless but with some nice bruises to show for it. Only time Ive been injured by a nice man trying to save my life!

I live near Niagara Falls, and though there are also a lot of suicides (not filmed thankfully), there are also accidental deaths from people insisting on sitting on the railings taking photos overlooking the Falls. And then...woops. I have seen people do this right beside the frequently posted signs saying don't climb or sit on the railings, but no. The rules don't apply to them. I have seen them put their children on the railings for a shot. And if any of us residents say, "Hey, the sign says..." We get told to F-off. So now we read in the paper that so-and-so dropped into the drink while up on the railing and we just roll our eyes and mentally dismiss them as fools. I tell you, the folks in the Falls have no sympathy for these people.

He was 9 at the time so he wasn't wandering as you may see a toddler, but if you ask my Mom about it, she just said he had a dangerous look in his eye. It's insane to me that people would actually be willing to put their children in danger for a picture.

Last time you didn't wear a helmet on a bicycle or scooter or skateboard? Last time you jaywalked? Last time you forewent earplugs at a concert because you wanted "the real experience"? Last time you smoked anything just because you wanted a "good time"? Last time you skipped a safety procedure at work because it takes too much time and it feels unnecessary? OMG! The geyser death! I happened to be in Chile the week after that poor woman died! To go see the geysers, the best time is early, early in the morning before sunrise. As we were going up, the guides warned us, "Hey, last week, a woman died in one of these geysers. She was taking a selfie..." The story he told us was exactly as it was stated here. Obviously, we were all cautious around the geysers that day. That story has always haunted me. I didn't know that had been widely circulated.

I am with you on this. To take a little further....how many people have been killed as a result of messing with their phones doing anything. Walking and driving are two things that come immediately to mind, especially driving. One may also consider how many die prematurely due to the sedentary lifestyle a tremendous amount of phone use brings (that metric may be a bit tougher to amass). The inattentiveness to the world around one is astonishing when staring at a phone (as I glance at mine lying beside my laptop). The irony.

The bull run celebration is something I used to watch on TV with my grandpa when I was a kid, back in the 90's. My grandpa was always able to differentiate the locals from the tourists within the group of people participating, and with time, I learned how to as well. For those who are curious, it wasn't about who got hurt or not, but about who deliberately got in front of a bull and who touched one. Those were usually the tourists. The locals would always run at either side or behind, and many of them would lead the bulls away from spectators. Tourists would usually seek the thrill of it instead.

On one trip, I had like 3 different people slow me down (I'm scared of heights and this was a thing I was pushing myself to do and wanted to do fast) doing that, with little regard for the actual situation they were in. Many people have it in their head that if you're allowed to be in an area, it must be 100% safe. This gets compounded when additional safety measures are in place beyond simple railings, like the mentioned chains. They become "guaranteed safe" signals by people and are used in an unsafe manner all the time. For most, "bad things" only happen to other people. They believe themselves to be the main character and the main character always comes out fine in the end.

No, these stories don't do that at all. Someone getting hit by a car just walking down the street trying to live their life does that. Someone having a massive heart attack when they had no signs of heart problems does that. Some innocent person getting shot in a school, mall, movie theater, church, office, grocery store, etc. does that. What these stories do is show how people who have no common sense can get themselves killed (and/or possibly others) doing incredibly stupid things. The people who appear in these stories are the kind of people that Darwin Awards memorialize. Well, as they say..."At least they died doing what they love."

Long time subscriber and good to see FH is well into the 'big time' subscribers zone. These are always excellent and yet never 'gratiutious' never for the gore and instead respectfully described but fascinating horrors, actually educational warnings and historical moments.

I'm so glad you refrained from judging any of these people for what many may consider "stupid" actions. You tell us the facts, and that's all that is needed. It's worth remembering that all of these people have families.

I've seen two deaths by selfie. Both in Yellowstone, one a guy backed off a cliff trying to take a selfie with an eagle or some raptor, another was a woman trying to take a selfie in a herd of bison... That was the most brutal one to watch.

Visited the Grand Canyon a couple times and the number of times my heart went into my throat because I was SURE some idiot was going to fall off the cliffs taking a selfie or posing for a pic… soooo many times. There were clear signs and barriers all around saying don’t go there, it’s not safe, but lots of people climbed right over. I saw parents putting very young children on the edge of cliffs, with no safety rail. It was so stressful.
