Every history book I've seen on this period says that Charles IV was happy for Edward II's French possessions to be transferred to Prince Edward if Edward II wasn't willing to come to France (he even made this suggestion) provided the Prince came in person to pay homage. Edward II's main supporters, the Despensers, feared what would happen if the Prince was outside of the King's ie their control.

You say that every book you have seen on this period indicated that Charles made the suggestion. I will cite my two sources. The first is a book titled Edward III, A Heroic Failure by Jonathan Sumption, a medieval Historian and former Supreme Court judge in the UK. In his book he writes, "His father, who was desperate to avoid doing homage to the French king in person, had hit upon the idea of transferring the duchy of Aquitaine to his heir and sending him to do homage in his place. Charles IV agreed to this proposal, probably at the suggestion of his sister, who saw an opportunity to extract her son from the Despensers’ grip..." I will also site Edward II, The Terrors Of Kingship" by Christopher Given Wilson a professor of history at the University of St Andrew's. In his book he writes "A few days later, however, he changed his mind: instead, he wrote to Charles on 24 August saying he was ill, then returned to London. The French did not believe him, although they could hardly accuse him openly of lying, but many in England too saw it as an unnecessary provocation....." Here are two sources written by medieval historians, one that does not mention Charles being the one that suggested, the other that flat out disagrees with your point. With that being said, I fully acknowledge that you most likely have sources that say the contrary. However, I am also aware that sources don't always agree and based on the wealth of knowledge in this area that you have portrayed to me in our previous interaction, I know that you are well aware of that too. The only difference is, I am not actively trying undermine your credibility

Hard to say. There's been so much social, religious, cultural, and heath development in world history that they'd be more concerned about general developments than any kingdom in particular (probably). I mean, the idea of colonies (and decolonization), capitalism, and the concept that a sizeable amount of people are openly atheist would be either hard to explain or unfathomable to most European rulers of the Middle Ages. Not to say Medieval people were morons (I think higher of them than most), but they'd have a hard time adapting.

Mortimer and co weren't preparing for bed. They were in conference with Isabella in her chambers. One of those at this meeting was the Bishop of Lincoln, who was captured trying to escape via the garderobe shoot.

Hello. Although I have no intention of responding to every critical or corrective comment I do find it neccessary sometimes to respond to give insight for anyone who may read this. Although I agree with you in part, this ads little to the grand story and was intentionally passed over, as this is a "Brief History" and not intended to include every such detail. "Prepping for bed" is used for Isabella, and extended to Mortimer casually to easily set the scene for the listener without going into minute detail. My sources are in the video description and I will quote the book, Edward III, A Heroic Failure by Jonathan Sumption, a medieval Historian and former Supreme Court judge in the UK. He writes in his book "They burst into Isabella’s apartment, where they found her preparing for bed. Mortimer was in an adjoining room with some friends. There was a fight. Two of Mortimer’s attendants were killed and a third executed on the spot". If you expect to find every detail, such as the one you have noted, not only on the main character of the story, but the adjacent characters such as that of Mortimer in this situation, I fear you will be disappointed

For example, Ian Mortimer's on Roger Mortimer states that there were 3 killed by Edward's men - Sir Hugh de Turpingham, who attempted to raise the alarm, Richard de Monmouth a squire who had escaped form the Tower with Roger Mortimer, and an unnamed usher. Sir Hugh's cries did warn Mortimer and his cronies, but to no avail. The incident with the bishop, whose cousin had been executed by Edward II after the Lancastrian revolt of 1322, is one of those humorous incidents that rarely gets mentioned. The Bishop's cousin was Bartholomew Burgeresh who had held Leeds Castle when Queen Isabella had been refused admission and was the first of the opponents of Edward II to fall from grace. Thomas of Lancaster came to his aid and then turned away as he didn't like the man (all of my sources fail to mention what this dispute was about). The situation in Nottingham Castle in October 1330 also needs a little clarification. Edward III had numerous household knight, squires, pages and servants in his retinue, all bar 1 (a body servant) were refused lodging in Nottingham Castle for each night of the Parliament on Lady Isabella's orders (she was no longer Queen after Edward II's abdication) and had to reside either within the city or in tents in the deer park below the sandstone mound the castle sat upon. William Eland, a scout from the castle by the third day of Parliament had told William Montecute (also recorded as Montegue) of the secret passages from the deer park to the castle. Montecute lead 20 knights through these passages now known as Mortimer's Hole (recently reopened after the lager lurgi died down) to capture Mortimer. As an aside, Henry of Lancaster had originally been lodged in an inn in Nottingham until Isabella found out and complain that how dare such a notorious enemy be lodged so close to her. He left Nottingham for Leicester. There's far too much going on in English history for a 3 hour film, let alone a brief history film like yours. Why did I ever decide to set my novel in this era? I must be mad.

@@BriefHistoryOfficial I enjoyed the video and I appreciate the effort, it’s just that I’ve read a lot about Edward III including “Edward iii: a perfect king” by Ian Mortimer and “Wars of Edward III” by Clifford J Rogers and I’m a little bit in to “Edward III by W. M. Ormrod, I’ve done tones of research and I’ve never read or heard about him being foolish or not knowing how to handle finances. From what I read, he spent a lot money on outlandish things for the purpose of propaganda, to draw attention to his kingliness rather than his lack of finances but he ended up paying all his debts and making a lot money while also holding the king of Scotland as well as the king of France as prisoners at the same time. Now he wasn’t a perfect king but he was definitely not a failure nor was he a fool. I don’t mean to be rude, I’m just very passionate about Edward III because I’m planning to do a video series myself.

Well England was quite good at attacking countries/dutchys who was fighting aswell. What Longshank did against Scotland was kinda cuntish after fighting with together in the holy land & lied etc tho. Yet It still baffles me why the French king & church gave her to the English who burnt her as a heretic . Although the French victories came after the English king Henry 5th died of dysentery ( the soldiers disease) as it was called I wonder how things would've turned out had he lived until his son grew up to go on campaign with his father and learn the art the tactics of warfare . Instead of dying while his son was just a baby, used by England lords for their own gains with just his mother to confide to . As we know Henry 6th was a weak king,, without any interest in warfare without any lord who genuinely cared about his future and not used like a puppet, Edward 3rd son 'the black prince " was as fierce a warrior as his father, leading armies into victory, like at crecy aged just 16 years old. Henry 5th was fighting by the same age, he took an arrow to his face aged 16 at the battle of Shrewsbury . Even after fighting the Welsh & the Scottish and the French for so many years, after the 100 years war ended and having a baby as king, Lancaster began fighting the Yorkist army ( wars of the Roses) like they didn't know how to sort things out peacefully. ⚔ the English loved to fight.. Well the lords did , the regular people had no choice..

King of the Romans was the 'official' title of an Emperor-elect of Germany who had not been crowned by Pope as Holy Roman Emperor (or, less often, it was used as the title for the eldest son of an Emperor whose future election had already been confirmed). Charles V was the last Holy Roman Emperor to be annointed; after that, the Pope allowed the German ruler to style himself as Emperor without a coronation, so his successors became Emperors automatically upon their election.

I saw one person suggest Edward Longshanks should have selected his second surviving son, Thomas of Brotherton as successor instead of Edward II... ...Without understanding that Thomas was less than 10 years old at the time and his older half-brother Edward was already in his twenties. its a small thing, but when you refer to the French provinces, you always try and pronounce Aquitaine as the French would pronounce it, and yet you refer to Brittany as "Brittany" vs. "Bretagne". Be consistent.

Consistency is key. It's fun learning how places are pronounced in their language of origin... but if people recognize the English pronunciation just use the English one! Communication is more important than looking smarter than your audience.
