Henry II, progenitor of arguably the most famous dynasty in England's history. Some would say the Tudors, but the Plantagenets reigned longer and were involved in the development of the kingdom of England. The great and infamous family who followed Henry included Richard the Lionheart, King John, Edward I, Edward II, Edward III, Henry V, Edward IV and Richard III. There reigns would stretch over 330 years. (The Tudors barely surpassed 115 years; the Stuarts would not even reign for 100 years; Hanover 187 years; the current family Windsor (formerly Saxe Coburg Gotha) is now at 120 years). Even the current queen can trace her lineage back through Henry II.
@romanticlady81573 жыл бұрын
Not to mention that the Windsors will end with the Queen. Charles will start a new dynasty (the Mountbattens). I doubt anyone will surpass the Plantagenets.

Agreed. The Tudors were simply more controversial; however, they successfully transitioned England from the War of the Roses with Henry VII's propaganda of a united house. The Plantagenets absolutely reclaimed England for the English (via France, no less).

What a tale of power, intrigue, deception, betrayal and remorse so many strong & powerful people intertwined at the same time is a better plot than any storyteller could have written. There was a Dorney who served alongside of Richard The Lionheart during the third crusade... This ancestor would so impress the king with his bravery and prowess in battle that Richard gave him a ring from his own hand. The ring to this day remains in the posession of the english side of my family to this day. We also have ties to the Courtenay family as well.

On the balance it appears that for those times of medieval concept of fairness and justice king Henry II did a great job to establish not only a well regulated system of government, but also was the father of what later became the Parliament of England. I'd say there was more justice in Henry II's England than in many countries of modern times (even in Europe ex; Russia, Belarus and many others where the very definition of Justice would fail to meet even medieval standards).

Why is Henry II important? He was the King that took a customary common law system, managed at the local level, consent to the idea, as opposed to the Roman Civil Law, then brought it into his court. Thus the common law was no more. That is because the judges from then on, were Crown Officers. What judge would rule against a King or a Kings Favourite. So the theft really gain pace from here on.

ok, again, now you may be correct that the reason geoffery didnt help matilda could have been because the english lords would not accept angevin, this is questionable, the most likely reason is, henry I told em both that Henry II was heir and geoffery understood that, all he ever cared about was pushing his son Henry II to the front and he did this. Henry and a strong ruler was the reason geoffery fought. matilda fought for matilda, and eventually she had to do as her husband and father wished. to me its a better story, but to others they just like to ignore tradition of those days and input today into it.

lord this is a trend i see, geoffery was like william I, he was moves ahead in the chess game where stephen and matilda were figuring out the moves of the pieces. geoffery knew henry would need normandy, without it, NO england. william started with it and geoffery meant his SON would too. (by the way, does noone in these days realize the reason he gave matilda to his antagonist of anjou? well he knew their metal their way of life and abilities, (especially in siring sons, and strong ones) they were also against the king of france. and adding anjou with the rest would make his grandson VERY powerful indeed. push away hollywood (shakespear ect) and the party line coming from the universities now tell you to take with a grain of salt the written documents of eye witnesses because it doesn't line up with shakespeare or how one acts today. sorry i know i am a bore, but just hit your sight and really like your vids. i also have subscribed. but i do knit pick

In 1171, Henry II began his conquest of Ireland when he sent 400 military ships filled with soldiers and arms, and quickly conquered the country. In 1175, the Treaty of Waterford was signed by Richard de Clare and Henry, which began the long colonial experience which was to last for the next 800 years. Shadiness has happened in all the royal families throughout history. I do suppose Henry and Thomas are good friends again in the next life; it wouldn't surprise me if Becket was there to welcome Henry there despite the trickery and having been murdered by the four knights.
@est99492 жыл бұрын
Shadiness has happened in all religious institutions throughout history. It's nothing but a power grab with no checks or balances. Its whole business model is that they control people by brainwashing them into superstitions so they would fear the church authority. The fight between church and monarchy are basically the two equally power hungry autocratic parties fighting for more power for themselves, and that can ruin any friendship. Play a corrupted game, win a corrupted prize.

Henry II and Richard the Lionheart are the worst king in Uk, they engaged in crusade wars and killed many muslims and destroyed economy in uk. They hated the brittish working class and were known for their oppressive rule. Their actions caused widespread suffering and resentment among the people, leading to social unrest and discontentment throughout the kingdom. The ones who call them brave are often those who share their oppressive views and benefit from their actions, while the majority of the population suffered under their reign. Their legacy serves as a reminder of the importance of fair and just leadership, as well as the consequences that can arise from unchecked power.
