My dad's ancestors were Vikings who migrated to America hundreds of years ago via Nova Scotia, down into North Carolina, then they took the southern route of pioneers to settle in Tennessee, Arkansas, Oklahoma & Texas. It may be one reason I feel such a kinship with Scandanavians & love the bushcraft videos from there.

love the cinematic scenes in this video. I need to get a kuksa but they are quite expensive over here (around €60, the birch ones). Thanks for the history! I watched a documentary about vikings recently. They were incredibly tough and smart people. Even in turkey a name of a viking was carved into an old christian church. I've also heared russia got it's name from the vikings (or was it the sami people?) If i remember correctly it means the land of the rowing people. another Incredible thing that many people don't know is that half of the english language is old Norwegian as it was ruled by a Norwegian king back in the days. Faroe islands are nordic as well I thought. Scandinavia did so much more in history then we actually get at school. It was all about ceasar haha. Thanks a lot for the history lesson! I love Scandinavian history and mythology. Norway made such a good choice making the oil property of Norway. I love coming to Norway. Been there 5 times now and still feel there is so much more to see (Haven't been more north than Bergen up to now). I climbed the trolltunga last year. kind-off touristic but atleast all very fit tourists up there haha. I do a lot of free-roaming in Norway. Explore mountains and have lunch in nature. I hope Norway can stay like it is and doesn't overpopulate like so many other countries now do. Less people means more freedom. When you enter Norway there is like a vibe when you enter. You just feel the incredible beauty and also the harshness of the landscape. It just reminds you how tough people had to be back in the days to live there. I might share some videos of my trip to norway soon. Love Norse music as well. Been a fan of Wardruna for quite some time. Even kinda like the Sami folk music. Very nice give-away! keep up the cool vidoes. You deserve the subs! Thanks for always checking out my videos I also really appreciate that! Best to you! - Maarten

+Dutch Bushcraft Knives Thank you for the kind words my friend. The Vikings did their fair share of shaping Europe into what it is today. The viking king who ruled England I believe was a Danish guy named Knut. Most Viking enthusiast focus on the rape and plunder part of history. I really want to see if i can find out how they went about in the wilderness. I am not familiar with Wardruna. I will definitely check them out. The Sami folk music and "joik" is something special. One of the most captivating concerts I have been to was with the Sami artist Mari Boine. She is not exactly traditional but she certainly is inspired. The kuska I use is "Godkoppen" from a company called Eagle Products. I am really happy with it. I don't know if they send stuff to Holland but you could send these guys a email and ask. www.xxl.no/eagle-products-trekopp-godkoppen-stor/p/1060852_1_style If not, you should try to pick one up if you come back to Norway. If you want to travel up north some time I would recommend going to Lofoten and watch the midnight sun. That is magical :) Thanks for the stuff you do - Martin

I love your Norwegian woods. Would be a perfect place for me... And so under populated! You could not see anyone else for days and I love that. That law you have about being able to camp 'anywhere' for 2 days, well that's just brilliant, I wish the UK was the same, but unfortunately, the island is small and we have too many people here.

I'm a new subscriber, Martin, and glad to have found your channel. Love the history of Norway...especially regarding the Vikings. The concept of dispersed camping in your country is brilliant. Here in the U.S. we outdoorsman are often overwhelmed by local, county, state and federal regulations and laws. One has to do much research prior to hiking and/or camping on any property; and always check with the nearest ranger station or office of authority. I've had fishing gear nearly confiscated while fishing in Oregon out in the middle of nowhere. I was licensed but there was a ban on fishing on that particular shoreline which I was not aware of. He let me go with a written warning. Now that I'm retired moving to Norway seems like a great opportunity or option.

The "husman" is "torppari" in Finnish. We had the same system here. Changes in agriculture and therefore in the contracts between land owners and "torppari" was one of the main reasons for the civil war in 1918.

Interested ? I am ! I like Mora Knives ! But here, sadly, they are not that cheap... .I like history a lot, and found out a couple of years back, that I apparently have a link up north.... got diagnosed with ' the Viking disease '.... Dupuytren is its official name. My people have lived practically the same way here : the men went fishing, the women repaired the nets, did a little farming on the side. What they didn't eat, was sold to pay the owner of the piece of land they lived on... . A little variation on the theme, but poor they were. Still can remember those mornings when I was a kid : kippers for breakfast, or oats. Sour herring and potatoes done in their jackets for dinner, and lots of fish, 6-7 days a week... all kinds all sizes, we ate them !!! Miss those days now.... getting old I guess :D

+Rick Green I don't know bout the origin of the pattern of the sweater. My mother made it for me a few years ago and I like it a lot. Glad you like the video. The first knife is this: www.kellamknives.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1_33_128&products_id=853 It is in the stye of many knives that has been found in female viking graves. I really don't know what they where used for but I like the look of it. The second one is this: www.helle.no/products/knives/lappland/ It is a stainless steel version of the traditional knife used by the Sami people. It is a really simple yet versatile blade that is used for everything up north. Hope to see you in the next one - Martin

Fantastic location....Scandinavia is very well wooded and certainly a large area with a varied history. Vikings of course a very successful people. As I watch I think about Nordic influences in the UK - especially in the North and Northumbria for example. The small farms...a bit like crofting in Scotland and it to has similar laws about wild camping. There is common ground. I enjoyed very much your talk. All the best to you. Mark.

I think you are right about the common ground between UK and Scandinavia. There used to be a lot of people moving back and forth doing trading, raiding, farming, breeding and a lot of other things. Norway and Scotland are pretty similar. We have more trees and colder winters though :) Thank you a lot for watching - Martin

+der yoshi Glad you like my channel. I lived in Tromsø for a couple of years and that is not too far away from Senja. The nature is pretty different up there from what I am used to down south. It is really beautiful though. Hope you enjoy your trip :) I count you in for the draw - Martin

+NorwegianWoods I might have another question. do you think a plus four degree comfort zone sleeping bag is enough for the temperatures of average 12°C in the end of may in this area? best wishes from Germany!
@NorwegianWoods8 жыл бұрын
I think that might be to push it. I remember the day I moved from Tromsø. It was the 9th of June and it was snowing sideways. If the weather is nice it should be ok. Just remember that this is quite a bit north of the arctic circle :)

Hi, scandi bushcraft and outdoor skills are really appealing- there's a bit of skill and romance about it that in my opinion is lacking from some DPM slathered British BC stuff. Trad outdoor living is a worthwhile pursuit; I'll keep watching, so keep making films. Thanks

Thank you for stopping by my friend. I think I am pretty fortunate to live here in Norway. We have a strong and living tradition on outdoor living over here. I try to learn as much as I can about this tradition and I have plans for many more videos. I have been a little short on time for filming lately but I hope this will change soon. I think there are many interesting videos from the UK. You have some nice traditions as well :) The wool sweater is made by my mother but you can get something similar from this place www.sweater.no See you on the next one - Martin

This video is on such interesting topics that it continues to attract new viewers. As you say, life in the United States was difficult for Norwegian immigrants...but under our Northwest Ordinance, governing settlement of 'Western' lands, Norwegians who came to Minnesota, for example, could homestead 160 acres of land; improving it over five years of active farming and then own the land for a small filing fee.

What a beautiful place you live in Martin. I watch Odd, s channel a lot as well, and I've been to Norway, such a beautiful clean place, with nice people. I liked your history talk. You said that you viewed the swedes the Danes and the fins, as brothers and sisters, which is a nice thought, if you go back far enough in history we all come from the same people, really, we're all brothers and sisters, this world divides people though, don't you think. Lovely vid Martin, thank you my friend.
@NorwegianWoods8 жыл бұрын
I feel blessed by having these woods right outside my doorstep. I also like Odd´s videos a lot. I like your as well :) I think we are all part of one humanity in this world. We are all relatives in one way or another. I see the Nordic people as brothers and sisters. People from other parts of this world is like uncles, aunts, cousins and second cousins. The family tree reaches all around the globe. In these strange days we live in I think it can be a challenge to find a healthy balance between having a strong root in ones own history and culture but still respect all the others. I see so many people that goes too far in either direction. These people either loose themselves or the connection to the world. Thanks a lot for watching - Martin

+NorwegianWoods interesting point you make Martin, particularly about strange times, why don't you have a look at 2 Timothy 3:1-5 in the Bible. I think you might be surprised. Thanks again Martin. Take care my friend

+NorwegianWoods very true Martin, but I do look forward to revelation 21:3,4. I must say, it's nice to speak to someone who appreciates the scriptures.
@NorwegianWoods8 жыл бұрын
Yes, that is the key to everything, isn't it. The madness we see around us has an end. For me the Bible put everything into perspective. It sure is nice to speak to others that appreciate the scriptures. I do not go to church all that often, but I like to read the Bible. I feel that I get closer to God when I go out to the woods than when I go to church. I have friends that go to some different churches but I never really feel at home in any of them. I even went on the path to become a priest in the Norwegian church, but after a couple of years in the university I realised that my belief didn't match the one of the church, so I quit. The Bible is a strange thing. It is so easy to read but still so difficult to understand.

The Vikings where traveling a lot all over the place. They also vent to Africa but they faced some strong resistance down there and didn't settle. It is pretty cool the they made it to America as well :) Thanks for stopping by - Martin

I learn at school(history) but i was not shure, about Africa(well, 35 years ago). If one day, you came to Porto, Portugal, image the Vikings there, BIG FIGHT! They came several times! At that time we were worse than the Vikings, nor the Romans managed to conquer the city of the Porto, With the Spaniards was permanent war, the Napoleon was defeated three times! Now we are peaceful, at least in the last 130 years, everything is calm and we like your fish a lot: cod. In the last two years many tourists from Scandinavia have come, I hope they come back again.
