This is the brief history of the Boers. Something never really covered by anybody. The the word Boer is mispronounced, we sort of recorded it using Siri and was realised afterwards that it was incorrect. Thanks, sorry for any inconvenience

Glad you said that... 40000 Brits got their asses handed to them by 4000 farmers and converted to gorilla warfare - scorched earth policy ...then the boere decided to opt for the treaty

Not really. Read Packenham's THE BOER WAR. After about a year, the British reversed the depopulation policy of moving Boer civilians into camps and instead left them out on the veldt. Since by that time camp sanitation had greatly improved, guerilla Boers in the field considered their families in British custody to be safe, while the families left on the farms in the veldt were endangered (natives, collapse of economy, food shortages). So the legacy of the camps is a mighty one for Afrikaaners, but AT THE TIME OF THE BOER SURRENDER, THE CAMPS WERE NOT AN ISSUE.

My geat-grandfather, Koot Swanepoel was interred in Aliwal-North concentration camp from the age of 10 to the age of 13, his younger brother was 7 years old when they went in and 10 when they were released. The fact that the descendants of these people are still alive can only be summarized as follows: "Take a community of Dutchmen of the type of those who defended themselves for fifty years against all the power of Spain at a time when Spain was the greatest power in the world. Intermix with them a strain of those inflexible French Huguenots who gave up home and fortune and left their country for ever at the time of the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. The product must obviously be one of the most rugged, virile, unconquerable races ever seen upon earth. Take this formidable people and train them for seven generations in constant warfare against savage men and ferocious beasts, in circumstances under which no weakling could survive, place them so that they acquire exceptional skill with weapons and in horsemanship, give them a country which is eminently suited to the tactics of the huntsman, the marksman, and the rider. Then, finally, put a finer temper upon their military qualities by a dour fatalistic Old Testament religion and an ardent and consuming patriotism. Combine all these qualities and all these impulses in one individual, and you have the modern Boer-the most formidable antagonist who ever crossed the path of Imperial Britain. Our military history has largely consisted in our conflicts with France, but Napoleon and all his veterans have never treated us so roughly as these hard-bitten farmers with their ancient theology and their inconveniently modern rifles.” - Arthur Conan Doyle

Read in another language Piet Retief Delegation massacre The Piet Retief Delegation massacreoccurred when Voortrekkers under Piet Retiefmigrated into Natal in 1837 and negotiated a land treaty in February 1838 with the ZuluKing Dingane. Upon reconsideration, Dingane doublecrossed the Voortrekkers, killing the delegation of 100 including their leader Piet Retief on 6 February 1838. The land treaty was later found in Piet Retief's possession. It gave the Voortrekkers the land between the Tugela River and Port St. Johns. This event eventually led to the Battle of Blood River and the eventual defeat of Dingane.

Respect to the Boers, really??? The Brits were no angels but did you read the bit where they handed back the East Indies and the Boers disliked the British because they had banned slavery? Are you also forgetting that the Boers descendants then introduced the system of Apartheid. All countries have done things to be ashamed of. Did you also listen to the bit about Shaka Zulu and the expanding empire which caused other African tribes to fell or be wiped out (between 1 and 5 million?).You stick to your cliched victim narratives. We're all guilty and yet we're not, its history. I'm descended from Irish Catholics, Scots, Welsh and English. Does that make me a victim or a villain? Neither, its in the past!

@@mersey9956 you are wrong. Most black people were murdered by King Shaka himself. Did you know that? Also more black were murdered and opressed by black people during apartheid. Black people are responsible for their own suffering. Look at ALL the black countries. None of them thrive because of one greedy asshole. It was the same in those days too. There are more than 10 different black tribes, languages and cultures in south africa. You still think the boere did everything? Look at the facts. There were also less poverty, far less murders and 88% ( not sure about this statistic but it's close) employed black people. I'm a boer and there are TONS of black people who say they prefer apartheid instead of where we are now. Apartheid is not what you think. Get your facts together buddy. Apartheid was simply created because the boers did not want to ruin the black people's cultures. We felt it is better for them not to be "white washed". So we gave them their own land. 2 of those lands worked out if you look at Swaziland and Lesotho. Which proves they were not opressed in the way you think. It also proves that cultures between blacks differ and they murder more of their own people than the white people ever did. The black people were slaves but remember that they were slaves because they were part of " the enemy/ king shaka's people" in that time which is the best offer you can give someone who is foreign. All of the things I mentioned above was also stated and proved by a BLACK MAN who works at the university of cape town.

I don't think South African schools are teaching about The Anglo Boer wars, The Great Trek, Jan Van Riebeeck etc. I am 45 and learnt about those things. I am English - yes I understand Dutch / Afrikaans. Nowadays, at least the state schools seem to focus only on Apartheid, Mandela and De Klerk. I did learn about Apartheid as well - date it started, the various race laws, prime ministers etc. I learnt some Zulu but not enough. I long for a South Africa where we can have schools that teach a well rounded South African and International history, languages to profiency, descent level Maths, Science and Computers. And to get rid of those dastardly uniforms lol - another mark from the British! 😂😂😂

God I love history in the 1800s through early 1900.. especially Napoleanic times. I feel that the events of and after Napoleon basically set the stage for the start of WW1 which then lead to WW2 having a huge impact of geopolitics as we know them today. But these can't be learned without understanding the age of discovery and the Imperial colonization by all the great powers of that time. It's rather amazing to me that the fact a group of Dutch farmers settling in South Africa over 300 years ago still has an effect on local and geopolitics in that area today

As an Afrikaner ("Boer") the British in 1900 certainly had a bad impact on my ancestry. However, in 2020 I have benefited very much from the British presence in South Africa. Much of the systems (anything from educating to safety standards) were imported from Britain. I speak English relatively fluently (because of the British presence), which allows me to work internationally. I see the Brits and English speaking South Africans as my brothers and NOT my enemy! Long live the British and Afrikaners!! Lets move forward and don't dwell in the past.

Yes, thousand of people were born in South Africa whose first language is English. Most of them did not learn to speak Afrikaans but most or all Afrikaans speaking people can speak English. It was also their way to discriminate against the Afrikaans speaking people. Whatever the case is, we learned to live together with many other native languages around us. I know many English-speaking boere in our area. All good God fearing beautiful people and as friendly as the Afrikaans boere. To save this country we should learn to stand together. EENDRAG MAAK MAG.

The Boer is made of genes from adventurous, big, strong, healthy dutchmen who accepted the challenge of moving to an unknown country. Add to that the French Huguenots who challenged the mighty Catholic church of their time and refused to accept what they considered to be wrong. Add to that the adventurous, strong, courageous, healthy Englishmen and women who became the 1820 settlers and defended a border against a horde. Add to that brave Scottish teachers and missionaries who accepted all the challenges that was pitted against them. Then there were the strong diamond and gold diggers made up of Irish, German, Portuguese and many other nationalities. All these genes combined to make up the modern Boer, a creature who will bend over backwards to keep the peace, but becomes an extremely dangerous being when pushed into a corner, and that is exactly where they are heading right now. You may read the opening paragraphs of Arthur Conan Doyle's "the Great Boer War" to understand this. Conan Doyle had firsthand experience and understood them well. My grandfather Hendrik Lodewyk Ellerman spent the first two years of his life in Irene concentration camp, his mother Marguerite Ellerman (néé du Toit) died in that concentration camp. Despite all this and much more the Boer survives, and will for generations to come.

I would like to know your source for the number of deaths in the early nineteenth century tribal wars. The figures of 1 to 5 million are way over the top.
