By the time of the Clone Wars, almost every single Force User owned and was deeply connected to a light saber. However, in ancient times, the Je'daii order, the precursors of the Jedi were slow to take up the light saber and it is said that their use may have even led to the division between the light and the dark side of the force itself.
The first known plasma based sword weapons known as force sabers were developed over 40,000 years before the destruction of the first death star. They were heavily utilised by the Rakatan infinite empire, a canabalistic and brutal darksider species who had enslaved many of the galaxies citizens. However, it is also possible that these force Sabers preceded even the ancient infinite empire as much of their technology had been stolen from the Kwa, a client race of the even more ancient Celestials.
These force Sabers required a force hound to assemble. Force hounds were force sensitive slaves of the rakata who sought out world's that were strong in the force for the Rakata to conquer. By using dark side alchemy and lab grown Ebon Crystals, these force hounds could channel the dark side of the force to emit a plasma blade, creating some of the earliest variants of the light saber. However, these early Sabers had a strong connection to the dark side and would cause it's users to become further corrupted.
Around 10,000 years after the invention of force sabers, a je'daii master of Typhon was able to use force rituals to create what would become known as the first Blade, the first ever saber that was attuned to the light side of the force. However, due to the impacticality in creating this saber as well as the stubborness of the other Je'daii masters, traditional weapons such as force imbued swords would continue as the dominant weapons of the Order. And so the first Blade was relegated to an interesting curiousity rather than a primary weapon of the ancient Je'daii.
Around 25,000 years before the clone wars, on the planet Tython, a member of the ancient Je'daii would receive a vision of a dark side race laying waste to the Je'daii, all welding blades of frozen fire. As punishment for recieving this dark vision, the Je'daii masters would banish him to Typhon's moon of Bogan.
However, a few years later, his vision would begin to come true. A force hound scout from the infinite empire would crash land on Tython, confronting a few young je'daii. Using his force saber he would cut through the Je'daiis metal swords with ease, showcasing the superiority of the plasma based blades.
Eventually the force hound was defeated and he redeemed to the light and he would show the ancient Je'daii how to construct the force sabers
However, despite their superiority, many Je'daii would still reject their use due to their strong affinity to the dark side.
This would all change after the Rakatan invasion of the Typhon system. Many Je'daii would take up the use of the force Saber to defeat this new enemy, despite the risks.
Eventually driving the Rakata from the system in large part because of these new weapons, some Je'daii would continue to use the force Sabers, further causing a divide within their ranks.
This division would inflame a bloody civil war between the followers of the light and the dark, the first of its kind in known history. While both sides utilised traditional metal swords, the followers of the dark would continue to use the dark side imbued force Sabers.
After a decade of fighting, the war was abruptly brought to an end after Typhons planetary biosphere was destroyed in an apocalyptic cataclysm, largely brought on by the war destabilising the balance in the force.
The followers of the dark escaped to the outer rim while the followers of the light relocated to Ossus, renaming themselves the Jedi.
The Jedi would study the force sabers as well as the legendary First Blade, desiring to create a frozen laser beam that was more attuned to the light side of the force.
The result of this research led to the development of the protosaber.
