possible issues. 1, Most probable. "Its got a dirty mode selection switch. This switch tells the captains servo which way to spin and how fast, if its stuck in a mode for lets say like play or FF, it will lock the captain motor to that speed and normally lock out all other functions. Cleaning this switch will more then likely fix this problem. 2.bad solder connection somewhere on the captain motor/servo board itself. Thats how a typical capstan servo acts when it can't read it hall sensor, so it runs at full speed all the time. bad connection to the drive Ic or the drive chip has gone bad.

If you wanna put money into that thing, and keep it as a showroom vintage electronic device. Clean mode switch, check the belts, pinch rollers, and tires for dryness. Replace bad rubber parts from eBay. Check the deck sensor board for loose solder joints, or bad sensors And since the VCR is like 30ish years old, replace all the electrolytic capacitors on the power and video boards. Those things have electrolyte that sours out or dries up over time. Maybe that’s why your VCR is all wonky in hyperactive mode..

The IC needs to be resoldered. I don't know where it is on this VCR.
