What lessons does a virtues-based public charter high school in New York City offer to the ideal of education as a path to life success? Ian Rowe, an American Enterprise Institute senior fellow and cofounder of the Bronx-based Vertex Partnership Academies, joins Hoover senior fellows Niall Ferguson and John Cochrane to discuss the future of public education and charter schools’ role in the quest for better outcomes. After that: Niall and John weigh in on the potential for economic turmoil in a time of global instability; a hypothetical outsider as House Speaker; plus their like and dislike of the Olympic Games.
ABOUT THE SERIES
GoodFellows, a weekly Hoover Institution broadcast, features senior fellows John Cochrane, Niall Ferguson, and H.R. McMaster discussing the social, economic, and geostrategic ramifications of this changed world. They can’t banter over lunch these days, but they continue their spirited conversation online about what comes next, as we look forward to an end to the crisis.

This is a great example of how we’ll defeat cynical, irresponsible, and racially-fixated public institutions: hold them to account, debate them, and offer compelling and successful alternatives. Stellar episode!

To Niall: Next time you are in Austin you need to see my wife in action as a homeschool teacher. I've seen the gamut in homeschooling. When it comes to rigor, homeschools are hardly monolithic. Seeing the best in action may make you slightly more bullish on the idea. Oh yeah, our two sons experienced all three options: private, homeschool, and finished with public. One has two degrees in accounting from UT/Austin and works for Deloitte. The other is finishing law school at Harvard. All three environments had their plusses and minuses.

Great presentation Ian. My son went to an IB program and it was tough, but he was better for it. The difference in your situation is that in your school your students can come out job ready. We need these type of workers as well. (Desperately!)

Nothing against charter schools but I wonder if part of the better performance of students in a charter school is that parents that would put in the effort to get their children into charter school are taking more interest in their children’s education than the average parent of public school children

These are not public schools - They are disguised private schools. They detract from a common goal of educating the general public. They CHOOSE who they wish to educate.

First thing to raising growth, revenues, and productivity is right sizing regulation. Not only do unneeded regs waste time, money, and employees, it slows innovation, and all the compliance expenses reduce tax revenues (Fed, State, Local, payroll, taxes) .

A couple of years ago in the province of Ontario, Canada, the top 50 schools in the province were all Catholic schools which are open to non Catholics if there are any openings available. I would not dream of sending a child to the sick public schools.

Home schooling cannot provide the resources needed for the study of the sciences, where fully equipped laboratories are needed. The are perhaps better at the arts and humanities, where such facilities are not required.

Since when does teaching the sciences require a laboratory, fully equipped or otherwise? I took AP biology and AP chemistry in 11th grade. Especially in chemistry, 99.99% of our work was on paper. We did mess with Bunson burners and beakers a little but that was of very little value compared with the work we did on paper. Nearly the same for AP biology. We dissected a cat and memorized muscles but almost all our biology class work was on paper. If we'd done no labs at all, we would have been fine as far as learning what is relevant to each field.

This is odd. People normally only come around to Sowell's ideas about 30-40 years after he expresses them. Sowell released "Charter Schools and Their Enemies" 3 years ago. Are we catching up ?

Due to a scheduling quirk, this show was recorded a few days after the Kotkin Good Fellows, which was recorded 3 days after the live show. It's just how these shows came together. Perhaps needless to say, it's a *very* complicated process given all of the schedules and time zones involved. Consequently, we had to delay the release of this show a week in order to space them out a bit. We'll be back to our normal 2x/month schedule with next week's show with guests General Ben Hodges and Economist and podcaster Russ Roberts -- a rare two guest show! And we'll stick to that schedule for the rest of the year. Coming soon: Karl Rove, Bari Weiss and a some surprise guests as well, And yes, H.R. will be on the show for the rest of the year! -- SI Good Fellows Exec Producer

Unfortunately many black families don't read to their children, which keeps delays their reading ability, and that is often blamed on the schools.

EVs are fine for those whose benefits exceed their expenses. No need for subsidies. Tesla has built 40,000 chargers WW, 15,000 in US. 80 pct of Tesla owners charge at home. Elon has bet a billion on the need for Class 8 trucks.

My personal feeling is that we should adopt a Finland-style school system. Public school ONLY. Public schools have gotten WORSE because of private and charter schools. If all students and their families were invested in the same school system, they wouldn't be so bad. And not all public schools ARE bad.

I am told by a NZ friend that there are only ccp red and economic blue in NZ. Both are woke. Whereas one is “racist”, the other is not quite. But again, both are woke lol There’s so many sub-categories under woke. It’s such a woke country which is only suitable for traveling or vocation or retirement loool
