They suddenly turn from chicks to full grown chickens don't they?

The perfect series at the perfect time. My hens hatched 4 chicks over the weekend.. they're absolutely adorable and the mother hens are so amazing at looking after them.. they're already running around in the run and I'll start letting them out into the garden, supervised, next week..

Fantastic, enjoy them!

Thanks for this series and thanks for your help a few weeks ago about chicken bullying, pecking order is a lot calmer, the bully hen is no longer the queen of the roost after it picked on its 2nd in command and lost all its confidence in 5 seconds, chickens are a learning curve for sure, your videos are very informative and great work, sorry to hear about the loss of your girls

Thanks so much Andrew. Sadly all animals do die, and getting used to it is part of the deal, although it never gets easy. So glad that yours have settled down!

Thank you for this incredibly easy to follow series of videos - I'm finally feeling ready to let my hens brood and expand my little flock of 4 hens and a rooster. THANK YOU

We generally cull surplus cockerels at maturity of around 26 weeks so that's a while away

I recently got a buff Orpington that’s approx 20 weeks old. At what point in your Orpington’s do you expect their first egg?
@EnglishCountryLife3 жыл бұрын
Hi Alex 26 weeks is a good average but anywhere from 24 to 30 weeks.

Hello again, 6 of our chicks have hatched last sunday and one hatched 4 days later then the others now he is 3 days old and cant run around like other 6 chicks so i put him alone with the mother hen otherwise she doesent mind him and just pays atention to other chicks. Do you think this is ok or is it wrong to do this ?
@EnglishCountryLife3 жыл бұрын
Its always difficult Jakob. If you have a brooder or heat lamp I would keep the late chick warm in that & leave the broody with the six chicks. If you keep the hen away from the other chicks she might not take them back. If you have no brooder, consider keeping the hen & 7 chicks confined until the late chick can keep up.

What do you do with all of your males?
@EnglishCountryLife3 жыл бұрын
Hi Bayley. Because we have a good reputation, we pass a number along to other breeders to improve their bloodlines or to people new to breeding. The rest we grow on to maturity and they become table birds.

@@EnglishCountryLife that’s good to know, thank you. Are they mostly males out of a hatch? I’m going to hatch some gold tops soon under my silkie but I’m not so sure what I’m going to do with all the males. I would like to sell them on if I can.
