What are your thoughts on this scope? Would you consider this frac over a comparable Newt? Or over the other budget offerings? I do feel the optical results were quite decent (and it's always good to have an optical test result), but as always tilt is apparently here to ruin the day and requires patience to fix! Inspection report at 2m24s. I don't think much of the optics, it can't even pass a Ronchi Test. Spherical Aberration (SA) is the main error. But I would be using it for visual observing mostly. A real FSQ-106 does pass the Ronchi Test and has negligable SA. It doesn't say whether it's a double pass test (in Autocollimation) or not, which doubles the error shown, but there is overcorrection of SA shown here.

@@Poketronics I for one care, because Spherical Aberration affects planets details at high magnification and you loose contrast and details and the view turns soft and mushy compared to refractors that have negligeable SA.

Thanks for the review! Looks like a nice scope, but I don't really see it as competing against or emulating the Tak FSQ-106. The Tak has an image circle almost twice the size and is a Petzval design not requiring precise spacing from the flattener. The Tak of course is much more expensive. For folks using automated focusers, like most imagers, I don't see the utility of the extra focuser rotator, just seems like one more potential point of mis-alignment and tilt. I could see how it might be useful for visual observers who are manually focusing though. Seems like it should compete decently against other mid-range refractors of similar aperture.

Nice review, I have two of those refractors, the 106 and the 86, once you get the bracket for the zwo EAF it’s easy to install, I also bought the fIeld flattener adapters for both telescopes, which I also installed. You can try the back focus from 67 down. Somebody wrote that only Orion filters fit at the end of the FF, which is not true, I can put my optolong ect with no problem whatsoever. I can’t compare this 106 to the TAk 106, 2400 to a 7000 one. Not everybody can afford that luxury, but this one can take you to the same destination. Thank you, Rich

Notes from the seller: The ZWO EAF cannot be mounted on this scope's focuser as the large focus lock knob gets in the way. Adapter is sold out. Not sure about other focusers. The female thread on the 2" nosepiece of the included flattener is M48x0.6. This can only accept Orion brand filters which use this thread. You cannot use this end with filters made by others that use the standard M48x0.75 thread. This seems like a big deal, is it?
@CuivTheLazyGeek
@CuivTheLazyGeek Жыл бұрын
The nosepiece threads of the flattener is a non issue to me, I think these days, especially now that ZWO has good budget filter drawers most do not use that to mount a filter. But I do think the dual threaded adapter should be included in the package! And they should make sure to have the EAF bracket in stock (and/or provide a 3D model of it)

Hmmmm, good review 1st off. For me anymore at this price it needs to not have elongated star issues in the corners when using their supplied flattener. Using a flattener/reducer will likely make the star elongation worse so IMO the Askar V does a better job with this and comes with both flattener and reducer at a lower price and has better versatility despite smaller aperture.

Thanks for the video! With the shiny black finish, for a moment I wondered if it was a carbon fiber tube. The rubber rings on the focuser knobs don't look great, and I question their longevity. I can't agree that it is trying to mimic the Takahashi fsq. One is a triplet f6 and the other a quadruplet f5 design. Agena Astro's product description compares the optical design to the Takahashi toa.

Designed in Japan. Made in Taiwan. Much like most consumer Nikon products nowadays. Who I do believe have suffered from some quality control issues in recent years. I do wonder if this maybe the cause of the misalignment of the optics on this telescope or the field flattener? Having said that. In the Uk its around £500 cheaper than the Askar 107 PHQ. That could buy you a couple of decent filters. worth considering if you are not a pixel peeper.

This looks like a Long Perng product. Orion Optics has a scope that is a spittin image of it only the green bits are red. And it doesn't come with the accessories. I was an inch away from getting the Orion version back in 2021, but then I spied the WO FLT 91 and I went with that. In no way do I thin, the Long Perng scope is bad. Nice video mate. A ronchi in single type of light it appears blue probably not very useful. What you want to do is set up DPAC testing at home and you can test the accuracy of the figure at home and there’s software that even lets you calculate the strehl by fitting the dpac results in different colours. Theres a whole thread of it on cloudynights. But beware it would be right up your ally and it will be a new rabbit hole. probably a useful rabbit hole might complement your filter testing series.

Nice review. Did you consider using the tilt correction on your camera (if you have one on your camera). My ZWO 071 has that ability and would have been fun to check it out with the scope. One feature that I noticed is that besides the two speed nice focuser.....it uses a gear and rack instead of a friction type connection. I have that on my 6" Officina Stellaere APO and it is wonderful because there is NO slippage or creep as you move in and out repeatedly with a motorized focuser. Makes setup and consistent location of focuser and repeatability flawless. One thing that can cause the corner out of round stars is off center optic on the flat field lens if it isn't held dead center. The screw lock is better for that than onbe of those types that uses a brass lock ring that is clamped with only one compression screw that pushes the optic off center. Since this has the better camping arangement though I suspect the tilt is from the camera chip. The threaded to threaded version would be the better choice and that is what I use for that very reason.

Yep, mimics the design of the TOA 130 and 150 scopes, not the FSQ ones. Wide air gaps with 2 low dispersion elements. Its one of the best optics triplet designs out there, when aligned correctly. In fairness to the this great review, but also the scope, some time needs to be spent to to get rid of backfocus and tilt, unlikely it is the scopes fault unless there is a fundamental misalignment of the optics. Pity it is so hard for far east scope to have a black and white classic colorway. Loud primary colors are not so nice to some, but it looks well made.

The Tak FSQ106 is F-5 & a vocal length of 540mm, which is noticeably faster & wider than this FOT106. Furthermore, the Tak FSQ106 can provide a properly illuminated & corrected field for a full-frame sensor, and even a medium format sensor (e.g. 55mm diagonal or even 61mm diagonal). For the FT106 to have a chance at being a 'budget Tak', it would have to, at minimum provide a sharp & well-illuminated field for a full-frame sensor...and, IMHO, that is all that's necessary for a 'budget Tak', because only a tiny percentage of astrophotographers will ever image with a medium format sensor. So, I am hoping that Cuiv can get hold of a full-frame sensor camera to test what this FOT106 can really do as a portable, wide-field refractor.

It looks amazing mechanically, but the test results are quite meh in my opinion, perhaps due to mechanical design...Not sure why they went with locking mechanism instead of threads, that's a stupid decision, the adapter you mentioned should come with it, and the decision to not support EAF natively is also stupid($50 for a miserable bracket). Overall, it looks nice, but with the need for all these adapters and the already high price, there are better options.

Careful Cuiv, sounds like you have a crush on this scope LOL! Does you wife know about this one 😁 Either way awesome review and that is a really nice scope! So much thought into the design and the optics are pretty good! Just don't stare into the green, it will get you 🤣 Clear Skies mate!

My thoughts: not budget in any sense unless you get a pretty hefty monthly allowance. Cool scope with nothing inherently wrong but who is this for exactly? I'm guessing the people that think nothing but premium refractors will do. Anyone who needs aperture will have went for any other type of scope heck for the price of the small one you can get a beefy reflector with a great corrector if it doesn't already have one and for the big one you are getting laughed out of the room by the guy rocking a mega dob and a DSLR or the guy with a cass/newt with a crazy camera. Even for the premium people I don't think the extra spring for the scope this is supposed to be a cheaper version of. Would be nice to see actual budget content though, maybe home built scopes.

Great video Cuiv! But you an average Joe? I think not. Very erotic dew shield? I tried the one on my scopes and got nothing so it must be the scope. And the focuser? I think your videos are turning into astronomy porn! Lol. Keep up the great work. Love your channel! Au revoir From New York , Luis

@@CuivTheLazyGeek I am transitioning from Guitar collecting to junior baby level Astronomy and its very parallel as im trying to not spend too much at first in case its over my head. So far Dwarf 2 which was actually cheap for what it does and a 8' dob with a couple fancy eye pieces which cost as much as the dang 8'. If I get to a year and still go out at night to view ill think about something like this. I do enjoy your reviews and the dwarf was one that helped me feel ok about buying. Ill started 'budgeting" for a refractor maybe the Z61 or Red cat stuff at first.

Using the word "Budget" in headline, and then do the scope cost $2500,- Here in EU, it costs $3000,-. I will almost, just almost, use the word clickbaite. I normally enjoys your videos, but sometimes I think that people loose their sense for normal pricing stuff. I know, expensive stuff is more fun.
