please dont gut/destroy these modulators, you dont need to to fit a composite mod, keep the machine as original as you can, you can fit the mod/ccb/zxvid or whatever externally, and could even have simultaneous rf and composite out vis the modulators socket , the mod pcb wont be seen when the machine is refitted in the case... as for changing the 7805, yes it'll reduce heat, but otherwise no need to , the regulators dont go bad with age , that one you were doing was a very early model with 2C158E ULA, with 'buggy' rom and no 'kludge fix' board, i'd keep those pretty mush 'as is', i have a couple, . i've been thinking of a possible way of getting composite video without any internal changes, the MIC signal is taken from the modulator feed, but via a low pass filter and attenuator, it may be possible to reverse this and amplify/process it, externally so recreating the video signal,
