They've been ring barked/girdled to kill the trees. This can be done for a number of reasons. They may be an invasive or unwanted species of tree. Or it might be to offer a more diverse range of habitat for bird species in a nature reserve (I.E. dead wood for woodpeckers to nest in). It looks to have done carefully with a chainsaw by someone who knows what they're doing.

Yes it’s a forestry technique called ring-barking, which kills the tree by creating a break in the flow of water and nutrients in the living part of the trunk. It’s done to create dead standing wood which is great for wildlife as it decays more slowly than wood on the ground and provides habitat for birds like woodpeckers and bats etc

Hazey. If you go to the vineyard in France you can buy a bottle that is not for sale outside Chateauneuf. It is bright crimson and comes in an original conked bottle. Best wine we ever tasted. Expensive but incredible. Yummy yummy
